  1. A jabroni is just a jabroni. There are hundreds of them. Every team has some. Not much value there.
  2. RIP Pete Rose. Charley Hustle. The Hit King. The lifetime ban is now over. Although the Red Sox came up just short, the 1975 World Series was one of the most exciting ever. Great memories.
  3. The Sox may not be in the playoffs, but quite a few former Sox are.
  4. 1- Identify exactly what is needed to enable to team to compete with the best. ( This part is pretty obvious and not very difficult). 2- Determine which players out there could fill these needs and are available. ( Talent evaluation skills are needed here) 3- Have the skill and the guts to spend what it takes in money and/or prospects to acquire the needed players. ( Need cooperation from ownership here) 4- Get it done. Dombrowski was very good at this. Bloom was not. We will soon find out whether or not Breslow is. The alternative is to hope that the prospects all blossom into stars and you build a championship team that way. That is always possible but very iffy.
  5. A lot of present and former Red Sox players and officials were there, but John Henry was not among them.
  6. Can't get sentimental and start looking for the good in all these players. ( So and so had a .830 OPS from June 28 to Sept. 8, This pitcher had a good WHIP for four weeks in August, etc.) The fact is, the team has not been winning with this group. Change is needed. We can't pin all our hopes on three or four minor league prospects. Let's see if Breslow acts boldly after getting his feet wet this year.
  7. Closing ain't easy. It's a high stress job with a high breakdown and burn out rate. There have been very few guys who have able to do it successfully for a length of time. Try to acquire a young, fresh arm that can hit triple digits on the gun. If he burns out after a couple of years, look for another one. Maybe you can get lucky and find a good one. In the meantime, Hendriks is the best bet .
  8. Max, you are making stuff up and posting it as if it is a known fact. And posting it ten times does not change things.
  9. Everyone has to make a living. He is not in prison. Why is it okay for Bauer to be a truck driver, but not a ballplayer? Why is it okay to pitch in Mexico, but not in MLB. I think we are seeing a little too much self righteousness here. I can understand any owner not wanting him, but all of MLB ? He is being black balled. And that is not right.
  10. Hendriks has experience as a closer. He would be my first choice before those other names mentioned. But I would prefer to acquire one of those young , high-octane flamethrowers.
  11. The N.L. had a decided edge in interleague play this year.
  12. Apparently, Kenley Jansen has departed the scene and headed home. I know he is on the I.L. , but that is not a good look. Looks like he will not be back.
  13. Question: If you totaled the fWAR for each team, would the results match the actual standings of the clubs? Has anyone ever tried to do that?
  14. One of the things we always hear is how relief pitchers are hit or miss. Well, the fact is that ,aside from a very few, starting pitchers are definitely hit or miss as well. Between the ever increasing injuries , the five innings and done starts and the inconsistent performance, how many of them can you really count on ? Last year, Jordan " Monty" Montgomery was all the rage. How is he doing now ? This year it looks like the whole Seattle staff is highly coveted. Well, I wouldn't be too quick to trade a top prospect for any of them. There is a good chance they will disappoint. I think it would be a better idea to build a strong and deep bullpen. That is where the Sox lost so many games this year.
  15. Congratulations to Craig Breslow on winning his first participation trophy.
  16. If you want right hand power, Vlad Jr. could be available for the right package.
  17. Anthony is probably close to untouchable. Campbell bats right handed. That makes Mayer and Teel the most likely trade candidates among the prospects. As for the regulars, Duran has the most value, but would be a major loss to the lineup. Casas has less value , but would not bring as good a return. I don't think Abreu would bring back much at all. As always, the trick is to know who to trade and who to keep. Dombrowski was very good at that. We will find out if Breslow is.
  18. Ignoring the advice of Dylan Thomas, the Sox indeed went quietly into the good night. But they did last longer than many thought they would. Wait till next year.
  19. The cheap Pirates and their loser GM, Ben Cherington, screwed Rowdy Tellez by cutting him just four plate appearances short of his incentive bonus kicking in.
  20. More new merchandise to sell to the suckers.
  21. I would expect the Rays to play tougher than the hapless Jays just based on the type of manager they have. But the Sox could well win out. Then, check the out of town scores.
  22. Look for the Jays to lay down again tonight.
  23. The Sox won, as expected. Yes, Francis is a good pitcher, but the Jays pulled him after five innings and 70 pitches. They are checked out and very willing to lose.
  24. The tragic number is down to two. A Royals win and a Sox loss tonight would eliminate the Sox. However, that is not likely to happen because the Royals are in free fall while the Sox are again playing the hapless Jays, who have no interest in winning. And the Royals finish the year with three in Atlanta. Doubtful they win any of those against the Braves. The Twins likewise are in need of the Heimlich maneuver. Conceding the second wild card to the Tigers, the third is still up for grabs. If Boston wins their next four games, they definitely could sneak in.
  25. The Jays, not a good team to begin with, looked like they had checked out completely last night. If the Sox just play good baseball and don't beat themselves, they win the next two easily.
