  1. I imagine that the umpire's union would not complain as long as they used the same number of umpires for the same pay , with less work, fewer responsibilities and less criticism.
  2. I would say he has a chance, although maybe not a real good one. Who knows what motivates some of the Hall of Fame voters ? Different voters seem to have different criteria. And personal biases also come into play. And I think some of them don't put much thought and effort into the whole process.
  3. Regardless of what happens with Bregman, I think Breslow has done a better job than he is being given credit for. The addition of Crochet, Buehler and Chapman , plus the returns of Giolito, Hendriks, Fulmer and possibly Sandoval should shore up the pitching staff. I also expect good things from Guerrero. The lineup is good, if a little left-hand heavy. And I think Casas will become at least a halfway decent defender. And he was able to retain the prospect trio of Anthony, Mayer and Campbell. Of course , the proof will have to come from winning ballgames.
  4. Fangraphs.com is a three man operation consisting of founder and president, Charley B. Fangraph, Wilbur M. Bates and Harold S. Nerdwell Jr. The three buddies are Dartmouth grads who have not been able to make it in the business world. The three amigos, as they like to be called, meet daily at Charlie's house where they get out the computer and indulge in their passion for statistics and other various data. They like to issue " projections" and numerical evaluations of baseball players. So far they have been able to make a few bucks doing this. They are basically nice guys, harmless but not to be taken too seriously.
  5. The Irish pass defense had been highly regarded. But the Ohio State receivers were getting open all night and Will Howard was finding them with deadly accuracy. A game that started off so well went South in a hurry. Ohio State was clearly the better team. The only consolation is that N.D. showed some fight and didn't let it become a blowout.
  6. Closing ain't easy. No matter how good you are, people always remember the bad stuff. Even Mariano Rivera, without a doubt the GOAT, is often remembered for the few times that he failed.
  7. I think Slaten and Guerrero are worth noting also. They will definitely be a part of it all.
  8. I would not be surprised. I learned a long time ago that many things are not quite on the level. I have become more cynical and skeptical with the passing years.
  9. Sox fans keep the pharmacies profitable. That's just the way we are.
  10. Nobody likes him, but Aroldis Chapman is a legitimate closer. He is in the top 20 all time in saves. He is getting older and has bounced around a bit the last couple of years, but he has maintained his fastball velocity. Liam Hendriks has also proven to be an effective closer. The supporting cast in the bullpen is not bad either. It would be nice to add Tanner Scott, but I think this bullpen is shaping up quite well. And that bodes well for the success of the 2025 Red Sox. More than anything else, it was the bullpen that killed the team's chances in 2024.
  11. The Dodgers have certainly assembled the most talented roster in baseball. But the randomness and luck involved in baseball, especially in a short series, makes the playoffs at least somewhat of a crapshoot. Winning the World Series is much more difficult than it was back when the Yankees were racking up championships.
  12. In the words of that great American, Gomer Pyle USMC, " Surprise, surprise".
  13. No problem with this. Every team has a few of these jabronis in the organization. And every once in a while, one of them surprises you and actually becomes an asset.
  14. Cora doesn't have to hope. He makes out the lineup card. He can use Yoshida in the outfield as much or as little as he wants.
  15. I like the way the team is shaping up. I think it will be interesting to see how Aroldis Chapman does. He could become a key to the bullpen's success. He has 300 and something career saves. Ranks somewhere in the top twenty all time. A proven closer. He is 36 years old, but a physical specimen. As he has aged, he has been able to maintain his velocity more so than Jansen and Kimbrel. He obviously has some negative baggage, but I don't recall any instance of steroid use. Bears watching.
  16. Yes, I am definitely in the minority on these kind of things. The more modern, analytics driven fans dominate the thinking these days. At least on these types of forums. But I am stubborn. And my batting average is pretty good, although the BABIP is probably not sustainable.
  17. I know Crochet has great metrics , but I think we have become a little desperate for someone to save the day and lead the pitching staff to stardom. We see him as the chosen one. I don't want to rehash the " wins are the worst thing to go by" debate, but I have to notice that Crochet has a career record of 9-19. Are we willing to go long and large for a guy who has a total of nine wins in MLB? Wouldn't you like to see a little more evidence of his " elite stuff" being translated into winning ballgames before going all in on him?
  18. Baseball is a game. A sport. In recent years it has been swamped with hundreds of statistics, metrics, analytics, etc. Data, data and more data. Who knows how much of it is accurate and how much is biased and/or unreliable. I take these projections with several grains of salt.
  19. The Penn St. game was a thriller and a chiller. Great win, overcoming a very good opponent and a couple of dubious pass interference calls. One more to go. But a very tough one. Of all the playoff teams, I think Ohio St. is the most difficult matchup for N.D. They will have to be at their best to beat the Buckeyes. Go Irish. Beat Ohio St.
  20. It might be prudent to see how he does before giving him an extension .
  21. Spending what is needed to acquire/retain the quality players is important, but it is also important that the G.M. identify what is most needed and who are the guys who can best fill those spots. Dombrowski was very good at it. Bloom was not. The jury is still out on Breslow, but I like what I see so far. I think he gets it and is on the right track. That's why I am more optimistic than many on here.
  22. John Henry has done so much for Red Sox Nation. Now he is having problems and he needs our help. I am asking all of you TalkSox members and contributors to give $19.00 a month. That is really just pennies a day. Less than the cost of a beer and a hot dog at Fenway Park. Doing this will help John Henry get back on his feet. And it will enable the Red Sox to compete with the wealthier franchises, as well as help with the much needed repairs to Mr. Henry's yacht. Please call or go online to donate today. We thank you.
  23. Good point. And it was good to see. These final two games could possibly be decided by one kick.
  24. Excellent game by N.D. Well played and well coached. The Fighting Irish are just two wins away from their twelfth national championship, the first since 1988. Go Irish. Beat,Penn St.
