  1. Notin, The same argument could be used both ways. I could say that one guy had better numbers in most categories, but the award went to the other guy because the baseball writers valued his wins. And playing on a winner always helps, just as in the MVP voting. And I am not by any means saying that wins and losses are the only thing to go by. Just saying that wins have been pretty much disregarded by most of the analytics folks. And I disagree with that.
  2. A strong and deep bullpen is pretty much essential in baseball today. I think the Sox really need to improve in this area. They make the playoffs last season if they had not blown so many leads. Chapman and Hendriks should help offset the expected loss of Jansen and Martin. Slaten looks good. And Guerrero is promising. Whitlock ? I would still like to add a couple of more quality relievers. Do that and this should be a playoff team.
  3. I just made a post about the relevance of winning. That's all. I am not on the witness stand. It always becomes contentious with you. I am sorry I bothered. I should have known.
  4. Maybe ERA is one of the things they factor into fWAR. I have no idea. As far as I know fWAR is just something that a guy with a website invented. As for which of your groups is best, it's all a matter of opinion. As a rule, I would say that the guys with the best ERAs are usually the best pitchers. But there is something to be said for the guys who consistently win games. And there are pitchers who seem to have good stuff and good metrics, etc, but never really become big winners. In the end, winning is what matters most.
  5. A 20-11 guy is a guy who won twenty and lost eleven. What is a 2.8 guy? What calculation do you use to come up with 2.8?
  6. I know how to compute ERA. And wins and losses. The only thing I know about fWAR is that it is an acronym for Wins above Replacement. So that gets us back to wins, whether real or imaginary. I still have no idea how they rate one pitcher slightly higher than another. And I don't think very many fans do. But they go along with it because it seems like the thing to do.
  7. That is a non answer. I still have no idea how they figure one guy is a 2.8 and another guy is only a 2.6. And I don't think you know either.
  8. I think Breslow has done better than he is being given credit for. Crochet and Buehler have the potential to be excellent starters. Possibly Giolito as well. Chapman has been one of the premier closers for years, 335 saves. Hendriks has also been an effective closer. I like what I have seen of Guerrero. I would like to see at least one more quality reliever. Another right hand bat would be welcome, but I don't see it as a necessity. And I don't sweat the need for a second string , defensive minded catcher. You can always find one of those. Finally, Breslow has traded some prospects, but has been able to hold onto the best ones. I think he has done better than we expected.
  9. Of course there are flaws or quirks in any stat or any system. I think the correct pitcher gets credit for the win in most cases. In any case, winning the game is the objective . And a " save" is the reliever saving the win for another pitcher. When a pitcher consistently gets a lot of wins or a lot of saves, you probably have a good one. At least we know how this works. I have no idea how they figure fWAR or bWAR. How do you measure the difference between a 2.6 WAR and a 2.8 ?
  10. Why is it always said that wins and losses are the worst way to evaluate a pitcher? And that ERA is overrated? As are saves. And what we need to go by is fWAR, whatever that is? And if that doesn't do it for you, there is also bWAR to consider. Baseball is all about scoring and preventing runs . Wins and losses determine everything. It's not complicated . All of these analytics are as bad as the constant pop-up adds on this site.
  11. I think it depends on what your criteria for Cooperstown is. Personally, I would not be so exclusive about it. The Hall should not be reserved for only the no doubters. No other Hall of Fame is.
  12. I think some folks are just happy to be unhappy about everything. Complain about it all. It gets to be a habit. Sox fans get more like Yankee fans every day. That is not a good thing. Relax and lighten up a little bit.
  13. There is not all that much difference between most of the teams. It doesn't take a whole lot of improvement to make the expanded playoffs. The biggest reason for last year's failure was that they blew too many leads. That is demoralizing to the fans and probably ,to some extent, to the players as well. Work on improving the bullpen. Chapman is a start, but more needs to be done. Hendriks could help. I like Guerrero. . Add a couple more fireballers. Just having a deeper, stronger bullpen would make a big difference. And it wouldn't break the bank or " decimate the farm".
  14. He had absolute confidence in his ability to steal bases. He called stolen bases " Rickey Bags".
  15. N.D. looked dominant against an overrated Indiana until they went into that dumb soft prevent defense in the fourth quarter and created a little unnecessary drama. Now, the real tournament begins. Go Irish. Beat Georgia.
  16. Okay. Call it exceptional if you want. His season high was 41 with the Stadium short porch. He has played seven seasons at age 26. Not too many guys have done that. But my point remains: People have gone way overboard on him.
  17. We need a dose of sanity here. I'm all for spending to put together a winning team, but this is getting ridiculous . Crazy money. Soto is getting way too much hype. He is very good, but Mookie is a better all around player. Soto is a good hitter, albeit a career .285 batting average. He walks a lot. Hooray. Let's pay him 3/4 billion bucks because he walks a lot. He has good, but not exceptional power. Never led the league in home runs. He is a mediocre defender. Not a big base stealer. While I would like to see him on the Sox, this hysteria is not warranted.
  18. I am pretty sure that the Sox will make some major moves this off season. They know that they can't keep stringing the fans along indefinitely. It's time to step up and start acting like a big time franchise once again. I think even John Henry understands that.
  19. N.D. opened a can of whoop ass on Florida St. I guess the Noles won't be crying a river of tears about not making the playoffs this year.
  20. I heard that Cole tried to work out an extension with the Yankees, but he couldn't get to first base.
  21. Rodon has good stuff, but he leaves too many pitches over the heart of the plate. Right in the hitter's wheelhouse. Home runs follow.
  22. By the way, Freddie Freeman is pretty good. There is a spot waiting for him in Cooperstown.
  23. A lot of newly created, feel good positions. A lot of near useless overhead. Trendy, but a waste of money. Picture a bunch of stiffs sitting around shuffling papers and sipping coffee all day.
  24. I will watch all of the games, but without any rooting interest. The Yankees have always been the arch enemy , but I have no love at all for the Dodgers organization either. Both teams have plenty of star power and it figures to be a good series , but I don't care who wins. I only hope that the whole thing inspires John Henry to come out of hiding and tell Breslow to do what it takes to get back on top.
  25. College football has become a business. Just like the pro leagues. A twelve team playoff is excessive and all about the money. And regional conferences are a thing of the past. It is actually hard to keep track of which teams are in which conferences . And the games take forever to play what with the multitude of TV commercials. I guess it is working for them, but personally I don't have the interest that I used to have.
