  1. Despite everything, the Sox are still in the race, along with maybe five other teams, for the third wild card . None of the teams are very good or deserving of being in the playoffs, but it is what it is. The opportunity is still there for the taking. The Sox have three games coming up with the Pale Hose . They can't possibly lose any of those, can they ? After that is is mostly divisional play in the home stretch. So, it's not over yet.
  2. Baseball has changed, in my opinion for the worse. Instead of an exciting pennant race, we now have a bunch of mediocre teams scrambling for the third wild card spot. That is the focus for Sox fans as well as several other team's fans. It is nothing but an MLB con game to milk more money from the addicted fans. MLB is run by a group of slick operators who pad their pockets with money from the gullible fans.
  3. Yanking Criswell there did not make much sense no matter how you slice it. A lot of Sox fans are saying that today. Here is a quote from a Sox beat writer:
  4. Does Alex figure his own analytics ? Or is he largely influenced by the analytics people in drawing up a game plan ? Are MLB managers in general expected to follow the " suggestions " of the analytics crew ? I don't know the answers to these questions , but I do have my thoughts on it all. And I have no knowledge of why Cora was hired, but I do think that MLB managers are not exactly calling all of the shots these days.
  5. That is a convoluted rebuttal. The simple fact is that of the five highest payrolls, four are leading their division. If everything was equal, the odds of that happening would be enormous. It is obvious that there is a connection between spending ( and spending wisely) and the quality of the team. Obviously, there are exceptions.
  6. It's not just that the Sox were passed by other owners going nutty with spending. The price of everything has gone up since 2018. And that includes Red Sox ticket prices, concessions and memorabilia. But the Sox payroll has decreased by 64 million dollars in that time. That is a sizable spending cut.
  7. Like most teams, the Dodgers have to get their pitching straightened out , but right now they have to be the favorite to win it all.
  8. Of the five highest payrolls in MLB, four of those teams are leading their division at the moment. That is not a coincidence. And the Red Sox decline coincides with John Henry's feeling that he was spending too much on the ballclub. That is not a coincidence either.
  9. You are being especially truculent today, even for you. I do think that these things happen in MLB game plans. I may not know what I am talking about, but I still have an opinion.
  10. The third wild card is like a carnival hustle. MLB is the barker, and the fans are the marks. " Step right up, spend your money, you could win the prize". But that being said, there is always the chance that the team could get hot and/or lucky and make a deep post season run.
  11. Was taking Criswell out Cora's decision at that time or was it part of the game plan drawn up by the analytics staff that Cora is expected to adhere to?
  12. I have no idea whether the story is true or not. I know that both Clemens and the late Ms. McCready have admitted the affair while denying the underage part. Who knows if they were truthful ? The story is based on an anonymous source telling it to the New York Daily News. So, you can take that for whatever you think it's worth.
  13. Many pitchers seem to be fragile these days. They are dropping like flies.
  14. Great pitching is tough to come by. I don't see a Sandy Koufax, Bob Gibson, Tom Seaver, Pedro Martinez, Roger Clemens clone out there. A guy who will go deep in games and you feel pretty sure will get a W. Do you really want to go all in for a simply good pitcher like Corbin Burnes ?
  15. I try to stay away from swearing on here, but I am not especially offended by it unless it blasphemous.
  16. The Brave's G.M., Anthopoulos , basically hustled the new kid in town, Breslow. I think Craig is smart enough to realize this and learn from it.
  17. Looks like Dom Smith is being DFA'd. Baseball can be a cold-blooded business sometimes.
  18. Looking at today's new game thread, it certainly looks more professional and attractive. I would say that it is an improvement. And it doesn't stop anyone else from posting their own comments and opinions. I would vote to have the new administrator continue it, win or lose. Personally, I don't care to participate in the game thread when I am watching the game. Just maybe before and after the game. So, my vote probably should not count for much.
  19. I guess it would eliminate the use of an " opener" and bullpen game, if nothing else. Personally, I am against all of the tinkering with the rules. The third wild card is a money making scam, the ghost runner is an abomination , stolen bases have become too easy and the pitch clock is harmful to pitchers. And the shorter games result in a higher percentage of TV time devoted to commercials. Watch a game, when they go to a commercial, switch to another game , chances are good you will get another commercial. If you try a third game, you may get the commercial hat trick.
  20. This was my take on the trade back in January. I was pretty much shouted down. Lol.
  21. This road trip will be the acid test to see if the Sox belong in it or not. The Orioles pitching is depleted with injuries and tired arms. And some of their young stars are struggling a bit. They haven't been playing all that great. Not the worst time to play them. And the Sox should be looking for some payback against Houston for what happened in Boston. Why the Sox don't play better at Fenway is a mystery, but this is an opportunity to show if they are a contender or a pretender.
  22. Second guessing the manager's pitching moves is common fan behavior. The main problem with the Sox pen is simply too many ham and eggers out there. But it is not unreasonable to expect that Winckowski could close out a three-run lead. I can't fault Cora for that.
  23. The blown saves are the worst kind of losses. But the Sox aren't alone. Many bullpens are hurting. Hope to see Hendriks back soon. That would be a big help.
  24. Getting Hendriks back should help. Jansen can't pitch every night. And you can't trust these other jabronis to close a game.
