  1. Baseball is a business. A very competitive, results oriented business. And the importance of good management/ supervision should not be underestimated in any workplace. Obviously, it is hard to succeed when you don't have the horses. I think this season is, or should be , very critical for Cora's future.
  2. The guy who should be on the hot seat is O's skipper, Brandon Hyde. He seems completely lost. Cora, in his tenure, has been kind of middle of the pack. Up and down, but mostly down recently. The thing is, Sox fans are not satisfied with middle of the pack. For Cora to keep his job, the team has to start winning ASAP. Your personal likes and dislikes are not what matters. Results are what matters. And it is time we started to see better results.
  3. What are the calculations that derive a defensive WAR of -0.6 for Campbell? I had him figured for no worse than -0.4. Guess I missed a couple of plays.
  4. You can't count on anything with pitchers these days. Hardly a day goes by without an MLB pitcher going on the injured list.
  5. When a team wins a blowout, it is almost obligatory for a fan to say, " Why can't we save some of those runs for tomorrow " ? And if they lose a low scoring game the next day, the fan is beside himself over it all. That's baseball. Each day is a new contest, often with different circumstances. The runs are not carried over. However, I agree that over the long haul, run differential gives you an idea of a teams overall strength or weakness as the case may be.
  6. More than anyone, John Henry is responsible for the current state of the Red Sox. Sometime in 2019 he decided that he was spending too much of his money on the team and he wanted to change direction and go with something more " sustainable ". Firing Dombrowski and bringing in Bloom will have a special place in the annals of dumb moves. It has resulted in several mediocre seasons and a largely disgruntled fan base. This off season , he evidently realized that and at least somewhat changed course again. I see this team as finally getting back on track to the good times. And I have faith that Craig Breslow knows what it takes and has the ability to succeed, the shaky start to this season notwithstanding.
  7. I think Cora is a decent manager. He is not the best, but certainly not the worst. He won it all in 2018. He had a great team, but he handled it well and did not do anything to screw it up. ( And it is possible to do that) Since then, he has been getting mediocre results with mediocre rosters. All managers are second guessed for pitching changes made or not made , but you have to do your best with what you have to work with. I think he has done that, although the results are not always too good. And I definitely think this team will do better as the season progresses.
  8. The inimitable John Sterling explained it in three words. " That's baseball, Suzyn." There is much more randomness and just plain luck involved in a baseball game than there is in most other sports. You can lose to the worst team in the league, then beat one of the best. It happens quite a bit. Over the long season, it should become clearer as to who are the contenders and who are the pretenders.
  9. Casas believes that he is the world's foremost authority on the strike zone. Even when taking a called strike three, he just knows he was right.
  10. Ferdie Nerdwell: " Hi Jim Ed, with all respect, the boys in the analytics department would appreciate it if you didn't give any advice to our hitters". Rice: " What" ?
  11. Somewhere, Pythagoras weeps. But the reality is that last night only counts as one loss. I think the blown leads and subsequent walk-off defeats are more demoralizing than the blowouts. What is more troubling is the poor fundamental baseball they are playing. And that does not reflect well on the manager and coaching staff.
  12. Cora wasn't the manager in 2020. He was suspended and Ron Roenicke took the helm. Roenicke seemed disconnected and/or disinterested and the results were awful. I think this season will be a good test for Cora. The division is very winnable.
  13. I think MLB managers are all pretty much " player's managers " these days. That is what teams seem to want. They do not want the more authoritarian type of manager that we used to see. And I think many of a manager's decisions are heavily influenced by input and " suggestions " from the ever-growing analytics departments. To me, results are what matters the most. Cora won it all in 2018, when he had a really great team, but he has not been able to win the division pennant since then. Overall, Alex is a good manager, although maybe not one of the best. I still expect the Sox to win a very diminished A.L. East this year. And I think it is far too early for fans to be getting all nervous about the poor play and shaky start. The team will improve as the weather improves. Cora's job is absolutely safe, as it should be.
  14. Former MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel was among the many fatalities when a roof collapsed at a nightclub in the Dominican Republic.
  15. There are a lot of nervous types in Red Sox Nation. Always waiting for the proverbial other shoe to drop. I was that way myself before 2004 and the breaking of the curse. I learned to relax after that. It's better for your health.
  16. Somebody in MLB had it in for the Braves. Start the season with a seven game west coast trip. Four with the Padres and three with the Dodgers. To make it worse, Profar is now suspended for P.E.D.s .
  17. For " sensitive " , check out the Dodger's young pitcher, Sasaki. He had a rough debut and was knocked out early. The Dodger fans , as they are wont to do , serenaded him as he walked to the dugout. He then sat there on the bench with tears welling up in his eyes. He needs to get over that if he wants to thrive and survive in MLB. It's a tough world.
  18. Didn't mean to respond to your post. I was just making a comment about last night's games.
  19. In former Sox news; Eovaldi pitched a complete game four hit shutout of the Reds last night. And Mookie hit the game winning homer off Chris Sale as the Dodgers remained undefeated.
  20. The first few games of a season are always given more importance than they deserve. The Sox have a good team. I have no doubt that they will get their act together and start winning before too long.
  21. Baseball fans ( Sox fans certainly included) are a very fickle and often unsavory bunch. They will turn on players at the first sign of trouble. Even players with many great accomplishments in their careers. But let the player get a big hit or pitch a good game and " all is forgiven ". Until next time. Don't let us down again.
  22. If you want Devers to get work at first base, spring training is the time to do it. Makes no sense to do it now. Anyway, I think Casas is more suited to play first than is Devers. Rafael is being paid to hit. Let him focus on that.
  23. I have always wondered if Chapman was on steroids. But he has never been caught so it seems like he is clean. The guy is a physical specimen. And while others his age are at or near the end of the road, he is still throwing as hard as ever. How he does this year remains to be seen , but I think he was a good acquisition and certainly fits the definition of " real closer".
