  1. We're all hoping for the best.
  2. Perhaps 150 innings is optimistic for Eduardo Rodriguez coming off a bed-ridden season of myocarditis.
  3. Steamer projects that Martin Perez will lead the Red Sox in inning with 161: https://www.fangraphs.com/projections.aspx?pos=all&stats=pit&type=steamer&team=3&lg=all&players=0&sort=9,d Other Perez projections call for fewer than 161 innings: https://www.fangraphs.com/players/martin-perez/6902/stats?position=P https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/perezma02.shtml
  4. It's disgraceful. https://www.lookoutlanding.com/2021/2/22/22294815/kevin-mather-trampled-the-seattle-mariners-seeds-of-hope-president-ceo-john-stanton-owner
  5. Pablo Sandoval remains a reasonable comp for Rafael Devers through their age 23 seasons (although at those points Sandoval had four years of team control remaining while Devers has only three). https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/deverra01.shtml https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/sandopa01.shtml An extension carries risks and rewards because of the wide range of potential outcomes.
  6. FanGraphs Depth Charts project Red Sox hitters with 20.8 WAR and Blue Jay hitters with 26.5 WAR: https://www.fangraphs.com/depthcharts.aspx?position=ALL&teamid=3#ALL https://www.fangraphs.com/depthcharts.aspx?position=ALL&teamid=14#ALL
  7. https://www.lookoutlanding.com/2021/2/21/22294212/mariners-president-kevin-mather-full-transcript-bellevue-breakfast-rotary-club ... just when I was feeling upbeat about the Mariners and their future. The reaction of 20-year-old Seattle outfielder Julio Rodriguez, baseball's fifth-ranked prospect at MLB Pipeline:
  8. The Red Sox reportedly remain in contact with free agent Jackie Bradley Jr.:
  9. FanGraphs Depth Charts project 2021 WAR of 16.0 from Blue Jays pitchers and 15.0 from Red Sox pitchers: https://www.fangraphs.com/depthcharts.aspx?position=ALL&teamid=14#SP https://www.fangraphs.com/depthcharts.aspx?position=ALL&teamid=3#SP The projections for Red Sox starters are generous given the injury concerns. Or not.
  10. Last year FanGraphs had Ronaldo Hernández No. 15 on the Tampa Bay list: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/top-54-prospects-tampa-bay-rays-2/ ... and this year No. 23: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/top-62-prospects-tampa-bay-rays/
  11. SoxPropects has Ronaldo Hernández at No. 14 and Connor Wong at No. 22: https://soxprospects.com/ MLB Pipeline has Hernandez No. 15 and Wong No. 19: Red Sox Top Prospects | MLB.com WWW.MLB.COM The Official Site of Major League Baseball
  12. Mookie Betts was traded for middle infield prospect Jeter Downs, who today was ranked No. 53 on FanGraphs' Top 100 prospect list, one slot ahead of first base prospect Triston Casas: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/2021-top-100-prospects/
  13. That's an apt description of another club.
  14. Last year the Seattle Mariners used 29 pitchers but got only 28.2 innings from the three pitchers in their age 30 or older seasons. Before the reported signing of James Paxton the Mariners were projected to open the season with a six-man rotation of pitchers shy of their 30th birthdays, including two 24-year-olds, a 25-year-old and a 26-year-old. https://www.fangraphs.com/roster-resource/depth-charts/mariners The projected rotation does not include 21-year-old Emerson Hancock, 23-year-old Logan Gilbert or 23-year-old George Kirby, who rank No. 31, No. 33 and No. 92 at MLB Pipeline. Top 100 Baseball Prospects | MLB.com WWW.MLB.COM The Official Site of Major League Baseball Happy 29th Birthday to underrated lefthander Marco Gonzales.
  15. Last year, before adding Garrett Richards, Adam Ottavino, Matt Andriese and Hirokazu Sawamura, the Red Sox had one of the older pitching staffs in baseball: https://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/MLB/2020-misc.shtml The Sox hitters were on the younger side but the average age should rise with the subtraction of Andrew Benintendi and the additions of Marwin Gonzalez, Kike Hernández and Hunter Renfroe.
  16. Kyle Lewis was projected as a corner outfielder before impressing in center field last year. Lewis could move off center field ala Alex Verdugo and Andrew Benintendi.
  17. My power remains out in Portland, Oregon, but I still hope to get my second Moderna shot today.
  18. Dark horse: Seattle Mariners, who days ago signed another Scott Boras client in James Paxton. Seattle reportedly was in the market for a left hand-hitting outfielder to complement Kyle Lewis and Mitch Haniger. The M’s have a projected 2021 payroll under $100 million. FWIW the Mariners last year had the highest percentage of African-Americans of any team. The drawback is that the Mariners, teeming with highly regarded young outfielders, would want Jackie Bradley Jr. on a short-term contract. FWIW in 2014 Bradley and his wife vacationed in Seattle: http://www.playerwives.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/jackie-bradley-jr-wife-erin-bradley/
  19. In Portland we’ve been without power for 12 hours (and counting) after losing power for 11 hours on Saturday. This morning I shoveled the driveway for the first time in years. Stay safe and warm.
  20. With the trade of Andrew Benintendi, the Red Sox have made more trades this offseason than the Seattle Mariners. That was not expected. The parallel transactions: James Paxton vs. Garrett Richards (top signing of free agent starter) Rafael Montero vs. Adam Ottavino (trade for potential closer) Kendall Graveman vs. Martin Perez (pitchers re-signed after options declined) Chris Flexen vs. Matt Andriese (pitching depth signings) Keynan Middleton vs. Hirokazu Sawamura (bullpen additions) Will Vest vs. Garrett Whitlock (reliever and starter Rule 5 pickups) ... and no match: xxx vs. Enrique Hernandez xxx vs. Marwin Gonzales xxx vs. Hunter Renfroe (less Andrew Benintendi) xxx vs. Franchy Cordero (less Jackie Bradley Jr.) And with that the Red Sox are projected to win 87 games in a 162-game season and the Seattle Mariners 74 games: https://www.fangraphs.com/depthcharts.aspx?position=Standings
  21. This offseason the Red Sox have added Adam Ottavino, Matt Andriese and Garrett Whitlock to the bullpen and reportedly are working on a deal with Hirokazu Sawamura. In a market with 30 teams seeking relief help, the Red Sox did not come up emptyhanded.
  22. James Paxton will join a Seattle rotation headed by fellow lefthanders Marco Gonzales, Justus Sheffield and Yusei Kikuchi, who last year combined for 4.7 fWAR in 30 starts. Fingers crossed.
  23. Some fans are watching with optimism for a Seattle club that has not been to the postseason since 2001. It's that time of year.
  24. Does "tank mode" mean a long-range vision instead of the short-sightedness that leaves many franchises languishing in mediocrity?
