I wish Chris Sale a full recovery but upon his anticipated return the lefthander will be a 32-year-old coming off Tommy John surgery. Fellow lefthander Tommy John, who underwent the surgery in 1974 when he was four months older than Sale's current age, won 124 games before the surgery and 164 games after. When can a prominent baseball pitcher schedule an elective surgery?

My fantasy baseball league comprises a bunch of old guys as the league enters its 30th season. The annual auction has always been a big social event but because of the coronavirus this year we may auction remotely instead of meeting in one location. The old-school league only last year moved to a fully online auction. In previous years all bids were made orally (including one owner via Skype from Puerto Rico the past half-decade).

The Red Sox are scheduled to play April 9-12 in Seattle, where the Mariners today announced that the scheduled March home games will be moved to another location amid coronavirus concerns: https://www.mlb.com/mariners/team/statement This Oregon resident has tickets to the home opener March 26 (and had hoped to see my San Diego-based daughter in an athletic competition 90 miles north of Seattle on March 27-28). I attended a baseball game Saturday at Stanford, which has moved most classes online for the foreseeable future. The Sunken Diamond was nearly empty after the university had limited attendance at all athletic events to one-third capacity to promote "social distancing." It was unsettling this morning to read that three TSA security workers at the San Jose airport have tested positive for the coronavirus after my wife and I passed through security there late Monday afternoon.

Overblown is the narrative that a general manager will make desperation moves "to save his job." The general manager is likely to make prudent moves with the knowledge his job is in jeopardy if the team continues to lose.

"Desperate" may be the most overused word of the baseball offseason. The closest thing to desperation may have been the Red Sox trade of Mookie Betts (perhaps to get under the luxury tax threshold ... or not). The attachment of a top prospect or two to a salary dump of Wil Myers would not appear to be a move to yield immediate results for the San Diego Padres.

Red Sox marketing does not belong in the 20th century. It's a simple, prudent business decision. Things could be worse. In a five-day sale announced Tuesday, the Seattle Mariners slashed some ticket prices in half for their Season Opener on March 26. Reeled me in. -
