  1. One analysis of Mookie Betts' departure: https://www.nbcboston.com/news/sports/nbcsports/the-real-story-behind-mookie-betts-departure-from-the-red-sox/2168748/ On a tangentially related subject: https://sports.yahoo.com/mookie-betts-humbled-dodgers-support-044943620.html
  2. Shades of the four-game midseason Red Sox debut of another mid-20s righthand-hitting Dominican utility player cast off after two partial MLB seasons with an NL Central club: 2012 PC 18 PA, .625/.647/.750/1.397 2020 YM 15 PA, .533/.533/.933/1.467 Let's give it up for Pedro Ciriaco.
  3. In the 10 June drafts between 2006 and 2015 the Red Sox had 23 first-round draft picks, including supplemental picks. https://www.baseball-reference.com/draft/?team_ID=BOS&draft_round=1&draft_type=junreg&query_type=franch_round Of those 23 picks, Jackie Bradley Jr. has produced 16.4 bWAR, Andrew Benintendi 9.7 bWAR and Daniel Bard(!) 4.5 bWAR. The remaining 20 first-round draft picks have combined for a negative 0.7 bWAR. Over that period the Red Sox never drafted higher than seventh (Trey Ball in 2013 and Benintendi in 2015). The Red Sox did not fare much better in Rounds 2-4 but hit the jackpot with Mookie Betts in the fifth round of the 2011 draft. The point is that high draft picks provide no guarantee, although some franchises are more successful than others.

  5. Three-plus years at UConn have not cured immaturity.
  6. Including four quality starts! (the same number as the entire Red Sox staff)
  7. Taijuan Walker had consecutive seasons of 29, 25 and 28 starts before undergoing Tommy John surgery. The 28-year-old righthander has not missed a start in posting a 3.42 ERA in six outings this year. With a far better rotation last year the 84-win Red Sox got more than 25 starts from only Eduardo Rodriguez and the departed Rick Porcello.
  8. The Red Sox may have no shortage of openings in the starting rotation.
  9. What? No love for Dee Gordon? Or do you expect the Mariners to choose the $14 million option for 2021 instead of the $1 million buyout? I still like 28-year-old righthander Taijuan Walker, a pending free agent who I hope returns to Seattle.
  10. Top 10 in offense by what measure? The Red Sox are 14th in baseball in runs scored and 19th in wRC+: https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=0&type=8&season=2020&month=0&season1=2020&ind=0&team=0,ts&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&startdate=2020-01-01&enddate=2020-12-31&sort=16,d https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=0&type=8&season=2020&month=0&season1=2020&ind=0&team=0,ts&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&startdate=2020-01-01&enddate=2020-12-31&sort=5,d The Red Sox are seventh in the American League in runs scored and 10th in wRC+: https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=al&qual=0&type=8&season=2020&month=0&season1=2020&ind=0&team=0,ts&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&startdate=2020-01-01&enddate=2020-12-31&sort=5,d https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=al&qual=0&type=8&season=2020&month=0&season1=2020&ind=0&team=0,ts&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&startdate=2020-01-01&enddate=2020-12-31&sort=16,d
  11. Does this refer to Jackie Bradley Jr., who will walk as a free agent at the season's end? The Red Sox received assets in return for their deadline trades.
  12. Discussions on Rougned Odor and Nathan Eovaldi: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/08/rangers-red-sox-have-discussed-rougned-odor-nathan-eovaldi-trade.html
  13. Hours before Sunday's game I tried to convince a rival owner in my fantasy baseball league that Kyle Seager was an upgrade over Rafael Devers.
  14. SSS Small Sample Size Rafael Devers has posted a negative 0.1 fWAR and a negative 0.8 bWAR.
  15. The Padres also acquired catcher Jason Castro. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/08/jason-castro-close-to-being-traded.html I wonder how that impacts the playing time of Austin Nola, a pleasant surprise on my fantasy team. The Mariners might need a catcher unless Luis Torrens, acquired in the Nola trade, is ready.
  16. The votes must be stuck in the mail.
  17. The market will determine value. A team can trade for market value or get nothing in return for an expiring asset.
  18. Would anyone trade Mitch Moreland to the Yankees? Some fans would like the Yankees to acquire Moreland: http://www.nyyfansforum.com/showthread.php/140096-2020-Trade-Deadline-Thread/page4
  19. Last offseason Wil Myers and David Price were the perfect match.
  20. The point is that a contending team with the league's third-best record is unlikely to trade away one of its most productive players, especially this year when the National League has the designated hitter. The Red Sox, on the other hand, would gladly unload a player of Wil Myers' caliber and contract.
  21. In only 28 games this year Wil Myers has posted 1.1 fWAR, valued at $8.9 million: https://www.fangraphs.com/players/wil-myers/10047/stats?position=1B/OF#value The contending San Diego Padres won't give up the 29-year-old Myers easily (on top of a top pitching prospect).
  22. FWIW In 2020 29-year-old Wil Myers has posted a higher fWAR than any Red Sox hitter (going into Tuesday's games): https://www.fangraphs.com/players/wil-myers/10047/stats?position=1B/OF https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=0&type=8&season=2020&month=0&season1=2020&ind=0&team=3&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=&startdate=&enddate= ... with an OPS+ of 151. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/myerswi01.shtml
  23. One-on-one comparisons are virtually worthless but I found fascinating these lines from the first two seasons of Travis Shaw and Michael Chavis as Red Sox infielders: TS 2015-16 777 PA, .251/.312/.442/.754 MC 2019-20 445 PA, .251/.315/.440/.754 https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/shawtr01.shtml https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/chavimi01.shtml
  24. Jamie Moyer led the way on the five-man 2003 Seattle Mariner rotation that did not miss a start in combining for 1,027.2 innings. https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/SEA/2003-pitching.shtml Of course, the Mariners missed the postseason nevertheless.
  25. The concept of a starting rotation may be outdated as expectations of a starting pitcher have changed. The division-leading Tampa Bay Rays are 19-10 despite recording no quality starts from their rotation. Meanwhile Seattle's six young starters have combined for 13 quality starts as the 11-19 Mariners are in a race to the bottom with the Red Sox, who have four quality starts.
