The remaining 20 first-round draft picks have combined for a negative 0.7 bWAR. Over that period the Red Sox never drafted higher than seventh (Trey Ball in 2013 and Benintendi in 2015). The Red Sox did not fare much better in Rounds 2-4 but hit the jackpot with Mookie Betts in the fifth round of the 2011 draft. The point is that high draft picks provide no guarantee, although some franchises are more successful than others.

    Taijuan Walker had consecutive seasons of 29, 25 and 28 starts before undergoing Tommy John surgery. The 28-year-old righthander has not missed a start in posting a 3.42 ERA in six outings this year. With a far better rotation last year the 84-win Red Sox got more than 25 starts from only Eduardo Rodriguez and the departed Rick Porcello.

    The point is that a contending team with the league's third-best record is unlikely to trade away one of its most productive players, especially this year when the National League has the designated hitter. The Red Sox, on the other hand, would gladly unload a player of Wil Myers' caliber and contract.

    The concept of a starting rotation may be outdated as expectations of a starting pitcher have changed. The division-leading Tampa Bay Rays are 19-10 despite recording no quality starts from their rotation. Meanwhile Seattle's six young starters have combined for 13 quality starts as the 11-19 Mariners are in a race to the bottom with the Red Sox, who have four quality starts.
