  1. And he is a lot more likely than Trevor Story, who would only work out if the Sox also decided to play their home games in Coors...
  2. Especially since the union historically could not give a s*** about draft picks and minor leaguers....
  3. He had a nice stretch of 114 PAs. Yippy. He also posted a .503 OPS vs LHP and his success was limited to being part of a platoon, And despite being left-handed, still did not muster full time platoon playing time...
  4. I kind of like Lefty O'Doul for the Hall. Is there any player who was as successful after re-inventing himself? Babe Ruth converted from being a successful pitcher to being an immensely successful hitter, but O'Doul went from being a flop pitcher to being an extremely successful hitter who wasn't a regular position player until age 31 and still posted an OPS+ of 143 playing until he was 40...
  5. Exactly. And therefore losing for a better draft position is actually counterproductive, since top draft picks comman more $$$$$. There was a time when "rebuilding" meant "trying to put together a better team in the near future", but now it just seems to mean "saving lots of money and hoping things work out."
  6. Bryant is a fun pipe dream, but probably not in the cards. If the Sox sign a RHH corner OF, Andrew McCutchen and his .900 OPS vs LHP seems more likely to me...
  7. The NBA is the king of tanking teams, because there are only maybe 2 or 3 players in any given draft that turn into instant impact players. but in MLB, it makes very little sense. No one thinks Henry Davis is going to make the Pirates instant contenders. In fact, unlike the NFL and the NBA, even figuring out who the top pick in the MLB draft is up for a lot more debate, and quite often the top 7 or 8 picks get re-arranged in an order not found in any mock drafts...
  8. I would doubt this. Now if transactions resume and we get a 2B, then JBJ is a forth OF. But given the options available at 2B, it looks like it might be Kike back to the infield and JBJ/Duran in CF...
  9. That’s just due to the supply and demand issue. MLB, as the highest global payer of baseball players, only needs 776 people to fill their positions. If there were only 776 nursing positions in the world, those who made the cut would also probably make considerably more as well…
  10. No Bernie Williams? Thoughts on Lefty O’Doul and Babe Herman?
  11. As with any profession, the higher salaries are reserved for the (perceived) elite talents. Certainly a law student who aced his way through an Ivy League law school isn’t likely to be compensated the same as another student who struggled to make it through Barney’s School of Law and Grill.
  12. You don’t even have to go all the way to arbitration. Any player who gets drafted is free to negotiate with the drafting team in exchange for services. And while they cannot negotiate with other teams, they are free to negotiate with other leagues. Carter Stewart did this recently, forgoing MLB for Japan. But it’s not a new tactic. JD Drew and Luke Hochevar also did it and played in the Northern League got a year because they could not get the money they wanted from their respective drafting MLB teams. The slotting system doesn’t set pay rates for draft picks; it just sets a total budget for drafting teams…
  13. Other than Bobby Grich, who do you think belongs in the Hall that is not in?
  14. Sure there is. I suppose then instead of a corner OF, they’d be looking for a 2b. But it is easier to ramp up the offense with a corner outfielder…
  15. In wouldn’t hold my breath on a tumor started by SG. Granted, he’s working with the same level of info I am, do not sure if that underscores or dashes my credibility. But I think that got JBJ for one reason - to play CF. Maybe they use him to work Duran into the lineup. But I think primarily he is going to play CF. Right now all the Sox have for the corners is Verdugo and Duran. Not so sure it stays like that. But whoever this other corner OF is - Kris Bryant, Michael Conforto, Nick Castellanos, Manny Margot, whoever - it will be someone to make up all or part of the offense Renfroe took with him…
  16. What about the defensive upgrade?
  17. Like how Steve Piscotty wound up in Oakland? Piscotty is from the Bay Area, and when his mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, he asked the Cardinals if he could be dealt closer to home. For no reason that benefited their team, the Cardinsls dealt him to the A’s for two minor league utility infielders (one of whom was Yairo Munoz)…
  18. And if we stop proposing trades on Internet forums, it will stop this horrible practice in the real world, right?
  19. But they are free to bargain with the Northern League, KBO, NPB, the Japanese PCL, and, well, any of the numerous leagues on this list. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_organized_baseball_leagues Just like Carter Stewart did…
  20. Jim Kaat should have been enshrined long ago as well…
  21. It also helps you analogy if you pretend 1) MLB is 30 different companies and not one company 2) there are no other professional leagues 3) and they cannot negotiate their pay, which many somehow still do anyway…
  22. I had absolutely no idea any player drafted a Major League team was not allowed to pursue other opportunities for employment…
  23. There absolutely is something to anti-trust exemption negating the capitalistic aspect of it (although it’s not hard to argue that anti-trust exemption is just another economic feature to capitalize on.) But bare bones capitalism involves employee compensation through pre-determined wages in exchange for producing goods and/or services. In that respect, MLB does fit the bill. But your point is valid…
  24. Correct…
