  1. It’s very rare. Usually when articles are written about the minor league portion of the Rule 5 draft, they have to go all the way back to Alexi Ogando to name an example that mattered. Keller had a good fastball, but no control. He’s like 27 or 28. Nothing there I am excited about, except that we pried him out of the Yankees organization…
  2. Minor league portion of the Rule 5 draft. Chances are good neither ever sees Worcester…
  3. He also has a history for not being a good teammate. It’s certainly possible they bring him back, but he’s far from my first choice and is getting towards the end of good career. If he was a placeholder for some stud prospect who we could expect to see come July, that’s one thing. But I don’t think Jeter Downs is that guy, and Yorke is off on the distant horizon…
  4. If they were talking against some sort of legal agreement, it would hardly be the first time. They’ve all skirted around the rules to gain advantages in the past…
  5. So you’re saying it’s definitive that Iglesias was better in Boston because he prefers East Coast teams and not because he only had 64 player appearances in Boston as opposed to 447 in Anaheim? His stretch in Baltimore was only 150 PA, giving him all of 214 PA on the East Coadt over multiple seasons, still far less than he had in Anaheim…
  6. You are going to have to be willing to accept that the Jose Iglesias you get for 2022 will very likely not be the one from late last season. It took a .915 OPS just to get him up to a 90OPS+. So if he’s not hitting - and the Angels didn’t release him because he was hitting too much - what have you got? His defense has declined and defense is needed less and less at 2b anyway, since shifts usually work the other way. Mentoring is fine, but probably a bit overrated. Should the ALCS runner up be taking on washed up players to mentor people in A ball in place of actual MLB talent that can help get them to the next level? And if they should, why do we have coaches in A ball?
  7. Apparently Suzuki was a SS/3B in Japan. A move to 2b wouldn’t surprise me. If the Sox do want Hernandez in the OF, then Suzuki is the only decent free agent option for 2b. The rest are all mediocre. The Sox could try to make an deal for a 2b. The Guardians have a surplus of MIF and a shortage of outfielders. The Sox are in the opposite position. A Jarren Duran/Tyler Freeman swap works on BTV. But I think the Sox might prefer a lesser target like Andres Gimenez…
  8. I don’t think they traded Renfroe to acquire Bradley on the premise that he was better trade bait. Bradley will play in Boston.
  9. Arroyo can play SS. Really he can do just about anything in the infield except stay on it. I could see getting a starting corner OF, and moving Kike to 2b. Or a starting 2b and maybe a platoon OF to partner with JBJ. It doesn’t help much that the one guy the Sox are linked to plays both middle infield and corner outfield…
  10. I’m sure Kike could play RF, but JBJ has the better arm of the two, so he’s a better fit. And Fenway RF needs a player like him out there. I don’t like the idea of re-arranging the entire OF just to accommodate McCutchen, who, yes, is no longer an ideal fit for the position. But since I suggested it, he’s now officially off Bloom’s radar anyway…
  11. I think the market right e is just for the RHH corner OF. Bradley is more expensive than Renfroe may ever be, but that part of the cost is already on board. Really it’sa question of whether JBJ plays CF out RF right now. I’d prefer Bradley to CF, Hernandez to 2b, Arroyo to the bench works for me. But I doubt it happens that way…
  12. But the JBJ thing is already here. If he’s the reason you think it’s a lateral move, then it’sa done deal. If JBJ is playing CF with Kike at 2b then the Sox need another corner OF, and can even get a LF. But if Kike stays in CF, then Bradley will be covering RF, and, even in his best seasons, struggled vs LHP and could use a platoon partner. But if that’s the plan, what platoon partner would NOT be a lateral move?
  13. He is projecting Ronaldo Hernandez, the catcher acquired from Tampa last year for Jeffrey Springs and Chris Mazza, for that role…
  14. How? A Bradley-McCutchen platoon in RF is light years better defensively than Renfroe, especially since Bradley is the strong side. And McCutchen should be markedly cheaper than Renfroe…
  15. A bit optimistic. Yorke only graduated high school 2 years ago, and in 2 more years he’ll be starting in MLB? Probably not. He’s more likely to see his stock fall than rise. We all assumed Jeter Downs would have a stranglehold on 2b by 2021 at one point, too…
  16. Yes, if Mookie is your benchmark, Renfroe is a bad defender. Of course, so are 28 other right fielders…
  17. I actually don’t think Renfroe is a bad defender. I just think Fenway has more ground than he can cover…
  18. Well, we don’t need McCutchen to be Dwight Evans. He just needs to be as good or better than Renfroe for, say 6 or 7 innings. When LHP start…
  19. I would be surprised if Bloom did any of those things, except maybe #3. 1. The Sox have already signed 3 starting pitchers this off-season, and none of them to MiLB deals. With Sale, Eovaldi and Pivetta in place, and with the possibility of moving Houck and/or Whitlock to the rotation, any additional arms are likely to be bullpen or minor league depth contracts. 2. This one is a maybe. It all depends on who is in the OF With Verdugo. Is Kike moving to 2b? Is JBJ going to take over RF or start in CF? Will he be platooned? Is Duran still in the picture? I do think if they get a RHH outfielder, it will be Andrew McCutchen, who OPSd over .900 vs LHP last year and could be a corner platoon. 3. This one we all agree the Sox need, but then we’d as also agree 29 other teams do as well. But I doubt we agree with Bloom on the definition of a quality reliever. I expect him to be eyeing someone like Oliver Drake. But we’ll see who it is, if anyone. 4. Certainly a good idea. But if I was Devers’ agent, I’d have to be absolutely blown away to tell my client to extend. Of course, it all depends how the new CBA looks, too…
  20. Oh they were great. I will admit I was already making white flags and brushing up on my French…
  21. The 2018 team was 10.5 games better and didn’t deal with a COVID outbreak…
  22. To be fair, by the time they started struggling, it was too late to go all in…
  23. It also includes a modification for whether or not a player is going through a divorce or just fighting with his girlfriend or mistress…
  24. If the labor dispute doesn’t end soon enough, he might just return to NPB…
  25. I wouldn’t read too deep into all these media quotes, Manny of which were taken out of context and are easily interpreted multiple ways…
