  1. The Sox do NOT need a rebuild. In fact that would be the worst direction If fans cannot handle one season of a team playing .500 ball amidst a cavalcade of injuries, why do they suddenly think they can handle 3-4 season of potentially .400 ball? And that’s if things work out, which they don’t in most rebuilds. The Sox have a lot of money coming off the books. They’re on the hook for $88mill next season before arb raises, assuming Bogaerts leaves (which I think he will). The bulk of that money is tied up in two contracts, the larger of which is completely immovable. I assume QOs go to Bogaerts and Eovaldi. Not JD and certainly not Kike. Sawamura shouldn’t have his option exercised. I’m ok with Pham’s, and Paxton was only signed for his option. So get a middle infielder (Kolten Wong?), sign some relievers (Michael Fulmer? Mychal Givens? Rafael Montero? Blake Treinen?) and bring back Kike (assuming Nimmo is unavailable). Trade for a RF. I’d love Ramon Laureano, but not sure how to get him. Then - play ball!
  2. The good ol’ completely unquantifiable eye test?
  3. I think everyone wanted better. Problem is, this was the best possible return. (Although I maintain to this day keeping Brusdar Graterol was better.) So do you agree or disagree this was the best possible return?
  4. I got the impression Sale and Bogaerts were signed once negotiations with Betts broke down. I think it was a choice of Bogaerts and Sale, or just Betts…
  5. Reportedly a lot more teams were in on Soto than Betts. Sox took what I thought was the better of the TWO offers…
  6. I live with two Cubs’ fans. One her whole life and the other just joining the ranks this year. No fans used to embrace their Perennial Underdog status more than Cubs’ fans…
  7. But now you’re all about system over results. Results tell you the ‘67 Red Sox didn’t win…
  8. Hey it’s tough to trade for players when no one else wants to, and the extra wild card might have postponed decisions to sell. Certainly Matt Carpenter was the Holy Grail Bloom missed out on, but given that Carpenter had spent all of 2020 and 2021 in steep decline and two MLB franchises released him in that timeframe, he did look more likely to be problem than solution. It also didn’t help that Plan C, as in Casas, got hurt…
  9. So you’re saying Bloom is at fault for believing in Kike and Dalbec? It’s not always possible to find upgrades between March and July…
  10. But the comments were about not wanting to be a fan of a team that never won a title. Or bring a fan of results over the process. I mean, the 1987 Twins - a team with 85 wins and a favorable playoff schedule determined by the old “alternating years” method - got better results than any team Yastrzemski or Ted Williams played for. We’re the ‘87 Twins fandom-worthy?
  11. But up to and through 2003, it’s not like 1918 was so recent I could enjoy it. And winning that first title in 2004 was far and away the most special. It was something I (understandably) thought I’d never see in my lifetime….
  12. They’re also a .500 team. And the way the AL East is this year, the last place team could easily win 86 or 87 games….
  13. Wait. What side are you on? All along you’ve accused Bloom and Henry of being cheap and not spending enough and advocating the Sox spend $300mill and calling out people who believe/know the payroll has limits as “wanting to save Henry’s money”, but now you think large contracts will ruin baseball? Heck even I don’t like large contracts because they limit the Sox by tying up the budget in expensive, aging, and declining players. But I never went so far as to say they would eventually ruin baseball…
  14. Cora will find ways to use Arroyo…
  15. Just 3 years and over $30mill left on that deal!!
  16. Teams were doing that kind of thing long before metrics. Catchers are like quarterbacks. They implement a pre-existing game plan. But occasionally when things aren’t working out, they call an audible…
  17. Kolten Wong (2b). Best defensive 2b in MLB by any metric you like. Career .340-.350 OBP is not ideal for the Sox missing leadoff spot, but he’s the most qualified candidate. This assumes Bogaerts departs (which will happen). Enrique Hernandez - He really is a top tier defensive CF, and the upgrade from Duran to Hernandez is akin to upgrading from a horse to a spaceship. Also, he’s been clearly willing to take a two year deal in the past. RP’s Michael Fulmer, Mychal Givens, Rafael Montero, Blake Treinen. Screw SP. The Sox should have Sale-Paxton-Pivetta-Crawford-Winckowski. They’ll have Mata and Bello for call up depth (and they’ll need more). But the bullpen needs help. Houck, Whitlock (who also might start), Schreiber, and maybe Barnes and/or Brasier need more support. Fulmer and Treinen (as closer?) certainly add some serious length between the top three (two?) and Barnes. Givens and the very underrated Montero just make this pen better….
  18. Especially if a few options get picked up, no one who makes my bellybutton pucker and unpucker https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/08/2022-23-mlb-free-agents.html
  19. Even when the Sox have “gone cheap,” the team still spends close to $190mill…
  20. I agree the Sox can make big moves, but will they? Other than bringing back Xander or somehow landing Aaron Judge, is there much on the free agent market worth making this type of move on? And I don’t think they will bring back Xander, and I don’t think Judge leaves the Bronx…
  21. Post-season wins and walk off wins - especially walk off wins when you enter the inning trailing - are different. But straight up regular season saves seem so unemotional when they happen. It’s not like players celebrate each win with a dog pile of an emotional orgy. They walk around high-fiving each other with all the gusto and verve that my mailman has upon successfully delivering me my bills and junk mail. I’ve seen bigger celebrations for 8th grade graduation (which are a real thing in the Midwest), and those are not exactly rarities. I do find it hard to believe that all this tension and pressure exist in these situations. At least not to the level fans want to believe it does…
  22. So last year, the Schwarber-Robles-Davis acquisitions received low grades and much condemnation as well. Will we be equally shocked this year? I admit right now, I still don’t expect to be…
  23. And two days later, Bugg got squashed…
