  1. That’s the thing about w defensive stats - a lot of times they flew against what we thought we knew. For example, if you hit 100 identical groundballs to two shortstops with the following results: Shortstop A got to 80 out of 100 and made 0 errors. Shortstop B got to all 100 but made 10 errors. Who’s the better defender? Shortstop A and his 1.000 fielding pct.? Or Shortstop B, who made more outs and allowed fewer base runners?
  2. Exactly. Bad enough many key stats are already very questionable…
  3. Isn’t that also true of offensive stats? None of them differentiate between a hit that starts a rally from a two out single that ultimately leaves the runner stranded. But then no aspects of statistics in any sport or application is meant to handle each individual situation…
  4. Why not free agency? RP is the one position where 1-2 year deals are not only common, they’re practically the only option. With no over commitment, why not sign a RP or two?
  5. In the last 21 World Series: Top Ten Payrolls: 11 Middle Ten: 9 Bottom Ten: 1
  6. You almost got your wish with your whole “I don’t understand ‘partially negate’”thing…
  7. The reason many relievers have a reputation for being more volatile is teams carry a lot of them and the primary reason they have the job is most are not good enough to be starters. As the Sox look now, the rotation appears to be a bigger concern than the bullpen. And of course the lineup is incomplete, but that’s more on the lockout…
  8. The only teams in the past 20 years to have the highest payroll and win a World Series are the 2009 Yankees and 2018 Red Sox…
  9. I’m ok with Casas as number one. Proximity should matter…
  10. Possible, but I hope not. Just like you think the bullpen is not a place to save money, it’s also really not a place to keep starter depth. Let relievers be relievers…
  11. If the Sox keep Houck and Whitlock in the bullpen, they do have five good options anchoring it with those two, Taylor, Barnes and Brasier. Hopefully they add another arm or two back there, but it’s probably not the weakness on this current roster. Sawamura probably takes the sixth spot, but the last two relievers (Darwinzon Hernandez and Austin Davis) are prime to be upgraded. Hernandez is a viable trade candidate, due to his salary, years of control, and 102 mph fastball. Davis would be more in line for a DFA…
  12. So why not include Moncada, Kopech and Margot?
  13. His defensive numbers were…
  14. I like Alex Gonzalez. He may have been one of the most underrated players on the team in the past 40 years…
  15. So thought? Think a solution similar to NBA free agency is going to be the answer here? Something like after 4 years a player becomes a restricted free agent where hits most recent team can match any offer, and then after 5 or 6 years the player enters unrestricted free agency? If we eliminate the arbitration system as well, does it help or hurt both sides? I know this is a massive oversimplification of NBA free agency, which, along with their salary cap, turns into something more complicated than nuclear physics…
  16. I think any solution I propose will be towards hard core fans. It’s the only mentality I understand.
  17. Just handle it like the 1942 White Sox. They used 41 year old Ted Lyons only on Sundays. Lyons made 20 starts, threw 180 innings and finished 14-6 with a 2.10 ERA. So you just need a pitcher like that…
  18. With more players or the same amount of fatter ones?
  19. I’ve been (ineffectively) advocating for that for years…
  20. Not good enough to get them to the postseason?
  21. Horse crashes?
  22. A televised meal? Watching people dressed like Omega Theta Pi brothers from Animal House drink tea for 20 minutes doesn’t fill my entertainment needs. Unless Joey Chestnut became a cricket player. Then I’m on board with the meal breaks…
  23. Cricket will never catch on in America. Never. First of all, they wear uniforms that look like they can right out of a J Crew catalog. Most American sports uniforms involve some sort of protective gear - padding, helmets, etc. That tells American fans someone might get hurt. Cricket uniforms tell fans that once the match is over, there’s actually a possibility of the bowler heading directly out for cocktails along the Miracle Mile with Daisy Lou. Plus if American fans think a 3 hour baseball game is too long, a cricket match is typically THIRTY HOURS long. They play SIX HOURS A DAY for FIVE DAYS. And pace of play? We just put rules into baseball that you can’t replace the pitcher too often or fans get bored. Well, cricket players break for lunch and again for tea!! Yes, they really do. If watching Alex Cora walk out to the mind twice in an inning is too much for our attention span, exactly how are we supposed to watch a bunch of J Crew sporting social fops drink tea for twenty minutes?!!??
  24. Going with full season but shortened Spring Training…
  25. Yeah Cricket might one day move on from the Willow Channel and maybe get some airtime at 3am on HSN…
