Baseball history story In the game in which Harvey Haddix pitched 12 perfect innings, the game ended with a similar play. In the 13th, runner on second (reached on error) and Hank Aaron on first (IBB), Braves outfielder Joe Adcock homered to right. Hank Aaron saw the run score and touched second base and then walked off the field. Adcock continued to circle the bases, but was ruled out after passing second base for passing Aaron. But the run scored and Haddix lost. And Adcock was credited with a double, “robbed” of a home run by Aaron…

In post 102, you said Renfroe outhit Mookie. Not outhomered Mookie or had more RBIs. Outhit. Your word. This despite Mookie having a higher BA, OBP, OPS, and, well, better just about everything. And no one cares if you don’t like OPS. It tells a better story of a hitter than RBIs…

But you also should accept the fact that RBIs are a lousy measure of a player’s talent since they depend heavily on someone else getting on base. Joe Carter was my first example. He was a lousy hitter who drove in 120 runs for the Padres one year. He didn’t drive in that many runs because of elite talent; he did it because he batted behind two Hall of Famers (Gwynn and Roberto Alomar) who were always on base. Put him behind two average hitters, and his RBIs could have easily been less than 70. Would that mean he was a less talented hitter? Because of who hit in front of him…

Yaz was not a sub-.800 OPS guy like Renfroe. He had power, but he was also a complete hitter. Dave Kingman always had more RBIs than Rod Carew. Was Kingman better?

So comparing RBI for a middle of the order hitter to a leadoff hitter makes sense to you? Did you also think Joe Carter was a better hitter than Tony Gwynn?

And why Story was likely brought in. While a lot of people found the 4 year $90mill offer insulting (and it was), how many think the Sox should concede even if Bogaerts wants 8 years $240mill?

And this is the issue What are Devers’ and Bogaerts’ demands? Have they even hinted, beyond Devers’ (agent’s) comment that the Sox were about $100 mill short?

I generally prefer shorter deals, but if the Sox lock up Devers for 10/$300, I might not mind. I’m starting to think Devers at 10/$300 might be a better move than Bogaerts at 6/$150…

If Bogaerts get $30mill, that’s probably a bad move preferably by some other team. Unless it’s like Correa’s deal. For a 3 year contract, I’m ok with a much higher AAV than I normally condone…
