  1. I do think McGuire is clearly the issue with this pitching staff. Kluber’s problem is most definitely NOT that his fastball is averaging 88mph. That can’t be it…
  2. He was a former 1st round pick and top prospect that didn’t pan out as expected. Toronto acquired him because they were hoping he would, but dealt him because he didn’t really pan out there and he had no options left. Chicago used him as the BUC, but needed a lefty in the bullpen and pulled the trigger because - hey getting bullpen stretch run help for the backup catcher is a no-brainer. Not all trades are made to get rid of players. Given his salary, there would have been no cost for a simpler DFA…
  3. Right. They desperately wanted to unload the backup catcher and his burdensome minimum wage contract…
  4. Ummm …. isn’t McGuire batting .391?
  5. It is worth wondering why Sale, injured at the time, managed to get a better deal than Bogaerts. If you flip those deals (i.e. sign Bogaerts for 5 years $145mill and Sale for 6 years $120 mil), the Sox likely still have both players…
  6. We know by 2018, he was making outrageous demands. But it was obvious he was a keeper before then. I’m not sure if it was possible to re-sign him earlier, but I did even say at the time (back in the thread about signing Price) that I’d much rather have seen him extend Betts. If it was obvious to me, it should have been painfully obvious to DD…
  7. I do not get his bizarre addictions to some of his pitchers. Ort, obviously. Never got his infatuation with Martin Perez. And not sure why he refuses to draft pitching except maybe (personal theory here) he prefers the safer position player picks as a way of bolstering the number of blue chips in the farm, thus elevating their ranking…
  8. The Phillies are 4-8. They had a good run in the postseason last year, but they also only got in because of the addition of the third wild card. Any other season, they would have fit the mold of DD’s Detroit teams that had a high payroll, empty farm, and no bullpen. But then most of their payroll last season was inherited and not due to his spending. Ditto the weak farm…
  9. Obviously it was. Maybe he didn’t like the direction Dombrowski was taking the team, signing Price and extending Sale over extending Bogaerts and Betts, for example…
  10. You don’t think building a quarter billion dollar team that finished 12 games behind the second wild card had anything to do with it?
  11. Before the season, I was worried and Kluber and Sale getting injured. Now I think the Sox need them to…
  12. So is that simply not tolerating a learning curve? I’ve seen numerous posts about how Casas’ offense is clearly suspect. Casas has a higher OPS after 130 PA than Wander Franco did. Or Mike Trout did. Or… I could go on. I’m not saying he’ll be as good as them, but most rookies require patience. Now the ask is about Hamilton. How many errors before he gets given up on? Or how well does he have to hin first 100 PA before he’s just another failed prospect? Not to mention - Dalbec played SS for ONE GAME. Not so sure he was anointed full time starter just yet…
  13. Hamilton never should have been added. Dalbec has limited expect SS but actually hasn’t been all that bad. Yes, he made an error. Know what other shortstops will make errors this year? All of them! I don’t Tomase’s complaint that Dalbec, at 6’4” 280, can’t play SS due to his size. Did he ever hear of Cal Ripken? (Cue Old Red replying “Dalbec is no Ripken and thus missing the point.). I don’t know if Dalbec is a good solution at SS or not, but if he isn’t, the culprit is likely not his frame. It seems as though many have already thrown in the towel on 2023. If so, what’s the issue with Dalbec at SS?
  14. My biggest Bloom gripes (that mvp omitted, although I clearly don’t agree with his whole list) 1. Turning down Graterol 2. Keeping Ort over Ward and German
  15. I will admit I wasn’t big on Springs when he was here. He only pitched 20 IP, but his 7.08 ERA left a lot to be desired. His 4.81 FIP certainly showed him to be unlucky, but it wasn’t exactly dazzling either. When that deal was made, most of the buzz was about giving up Mazza. Perez? He was a middling pitcher for 8 years, came to Boston, pitched as a middling pitcher for 2 more. And has had one good year since. I don’t mind giving up on him. Heck I thought they gave him one year too many as it was…
  16. Pretty sure I was saying months ago that being Tampa North wasn’t necessarily a bad thing…
  17. Even this year, what’s he had so far? A veteran Sale who has thrown 48 IP in the past 3 years. Kluber, another aging vet coming off arm issues. Houck, who has two pitches. Whitlock? One start after an injury. Not to mention the Orioles and Rays— who make up 50% of the Sox opponents - are apparently two VERY GOOD HITTING teams. I mean, if McGuire was catching for Glavine-Maddux-Smoltz, think he’d turn them mediocre? (Bear in mind old friend Javy Lopez couldn’t.)
  18. No, but the 2022 number might be influenced by several starts from Connor Seabold, Josh Winckowski, Kutter Crawford and pre-epiphany Brayan Bello. (He also caught some of Bello’s good outings.)
  19. The Brewers also missed the postseason that year, going 78-71 the rest of the way. Although they would have been the second wild card had one existed…
  20. The bad news is Sale is under contract for 2024. The good news is it doesn’t look like his 2025 option will vest…
  21. Damon had no arm strength. Verdugo actually does have good arm strength, but no accuracy. StatCast had his max velocity last year at 98.9mph, tops among Sox outfielders and 18th highest in MLB…
  22. As opposed to guys like Wander Franco who take less money and help their team win, but do so in front of maybe 2,000 people every night?
  23. McGuire and Kike both bat next inning. Today they’re 4 for 6 with 4 RS and two doubles…
  24. Devers is 0 for 9 in this series with 6 Ks
  25. If the ball stays in the yard, it’s a moral victory…
