  1. DFAing Ort actually makes not protecting Ward that much more understandable…
  2. If they trade for anyone there but Kingery, they have to DFA someone else…
  3. Just assume sign Chafin and not bounce anyone around. Then DFA Ort once and for all…
  4. If everyone is healthy, I assume Bello goes to WOO and waits for that status to change. The bullpen is likely Jansen, Martin, Houck, Schreiber, Brasier, Mills, Joely Rodriguez and another from Crawford, Kelly or Winckowski…
  5. NL And Perry openly defied the rules. The title of his autobiography was “The Spitter and Me.” He actually gave his method of cheating top billing in his own autobiography!!
  6. I hate when people try to defend Perry over Bonds by claiming his cheating was “different.” Yea, it was different. For example, what Perry did was actually against the rules…
  7. He might play some SS depending on if/when Mayer gets called up. But I would expect the bulk of his time to be at 2b…
  8. If the goal is to not pay Barnes, that doesn’t help. Barnes will pitch this year, and the Sox will be paying him to do so. But he won’t be wearing their uniform…
  9. There’s only four ways out of paying Barnes’ deal: 1. Another team claims him on waivers. (Not happening.) 2. Sox can deal him before he clears waivers. (Not likely since option #1is not happening.) 3. Barnes gets hit with a season-long suspension for something. (Not very likely either.) 4. Barnes voluntarily retires. (Not happening).
  10. Not really. DFAs have nothing to do with it. Right now there only have a 40 man roster. They’re probably not going to sign a slew of players with no options, but they also don’t know who is going to get injured once spring training begins. That’s why players like Raimel Tapia and Jorge Alfaro don’t appear to matter just yet, but one of them will probably take Trevor Story’s place on the 40 man roster and probably 26 man active roster as well once Story can be placed on the 60 day IL…
  11. No because removing him from the 40 man would have been the same process in December as it was yesterday, and Barnes would have been even more likely to refuse assignment and become a free agent. But if he hypothetically did accept assignment, it would have to be after clearing waivers, so the Sox still pay his salary…
  12. Options aren’t the issue. There is no 26 man roster in January. Any team claiming Barnes will take on his full salary. If Barnes clears waivers, he will very likely become a free agent. And any team signing him to an MLB contract might have to DFA someone themselves. But also by waiting until he clears waivers - Boston picks up the tab… But I don’t hear why not Ort. He’s 31 and a career minor leaguer. He’s probably been exposed to waivers before. Did he get claimed then?
  13. Maybe they think he will clear waivers (he will) and they can negotiate a minor league deal with him after he refuses assuignment…
  14. If they had a trade worked out, they wouldn’t need to DFA him. He might get traded now, but usually players that are traded on waivers go to teams who know they can’t make a claim. I don’t think any team that wants Barnes is worried about him getting claimed ahead of their turn. I don’t get keeping Ort over Barnes. Or Brasier. Or Dalbec. Or Hamilton. Or Duran…
  15. I think they figure him to be the most likely to clear waivers, due to his salary. Waivers aren’t always about releasing a player…
  16. If the Sox found a taker, they’d just trade Barnes and wouldn’t need to DFA him. They might find a taker now that he’s on waivers, but it isn’t likely…
  17. Barnes finished strong and I had hopes for him, but the people who know him seemingly like Ort and Brasier better. Oh well. Hope they’re right…
  18. Because we just got Mondesi?
  19. Or they figured an $8mill RP was most likely to clear waivers. Of course Barnes can refuse assignment and become a free agent. But that puts him on either a minor league deal or means some other team has to DFA someone to get him on the roster…
  20. A trade of bad contracts would require another DFA. Someone has to go to get Duvall on the roster….
  21. Not sure what’s more surprising - Barnes being DFAd or Ort not…
  22. Why not a Schreiber, who excelled in that role last year?
  23. No one is trading for Barnes. The only reason to acquire an $8mill RP with an ERA over 6 is if you’re dumping salary. If you’re dumping salary, the players are already on the 40 man roster…
  24. Who said Barnes departed?
  25. You have clearly never watched a roadrunner cartoon…
