  1. Nothing beat that guy on the other site - Bigfoot14b or something similar - ripping “Guitar Boy” as he called Epstein, for ruining the Red Sox. And not stopping this tirade up to and through the the 2007 World Series!
  2. It also helps if you get fired before your bad deals drag the team down…
  3. So the legacy isn’t in the winning …
  4. Cherington won, but no critics were silenced…
  5. If you use the BTV model, and let’s say the 6 fWAR player makes $20mill while the $2.5fWAR player makes $10mill. The 6fWAR player would have a surplus value of 6 x $8mill minus $20mill = $28mill. The 2.5fWAR player would have a surplus value of 3 x (2.5 x $8mill) minus (3 x $10mill) = $30mill. So in this case, the 2.5fWAR player is worth slightly more using this model. But pay him an average of $11mill across those 3 years, and he is worth less than the 6 fWAR player…
  6. It’s definitely a combination of the three. But equally? If not, what’s most important? And what’s least? Is 3 years of a 2.5 fWAR player going to bring back a better return than 1 year of a 6 fWAR player?
  7. It does seem like years of control and salary are larger factors than ability when determining the return of a trade…
  8. Saying the farm system wasn’t drained is going into denial. A top 5 farm system dropped down to a bottom 5 farm system with the Sox only promoting Benintendi and who else to Boston?
  9. I would have added Carson Smith, but we only gave up Wade Miley, whom nobody liked anyway…
  10. Maybe the ones regarding Bobby Grich…
  11. Bloom says lots of things…
  12. I didn’t go verify the count, so I don’t know if Lugo was considered. Soxprospects lists him as “INF”…
  13. I’m hoping the plan is to move a few if the shortstops, preferably for arms. I get drafting high school shortstops, as often they’re just the best players on the team whose future is likely in other positions. Throw Yorke and Valdez into the mix and that’s two more MI. Some of them(Rafaela, Hamilton) are already being moved off SS. I expect others to as well. But I don’t see all of them staying in the system. The main reason most could still be here is simply that only Rafaela and Hamilton are above A ball…
  14. I have plenty. But then even the deepest farm system only has maybe 8-12 Major Leaguers in it at any time…
  15. Gee, why didn’t you make a post when Baseball America ranked the Sox system much higher than the Phillies. Or do you only believe the negative stuff?
  16. I don’t know who Law has seen nor care if he is biased. And while I can see the logic in downgrading due to pitching prospects scarcity, I don’t agree with it. If you have enough position prospects, you can either trade them for pitchers or, if enough make MLB, they allow the budget to afford pitchers. It’s not like your limited to using just your farm system…
  17. Soxprospects.com does say Luis Perales has the ceiling of a #2 starter. Brandon Walter and Wikelman also have starter potential per that site…
  18. But even then there was no guarantee. Those same Dodgers traded for Trea Turner with that same extension opportunity. But Turner is in Philly…
  19. Since selecting Trey Ball and Teddy Stankiewicz in the first two rounds in 2013, the Sox have only drafted 3 pitchers in the first two rounds - Kopech (1st round 2014), Groome (1st round 2016) and Houck (1st round 2017)…
  20. The Sox didn’t trade 12 years of Betts. They traded 1 year of Betts and 3 of Price (at a 50% discount). Those 12 years came along later. When the Sox acquired Sale, they traded for 3 years (assuming options). Not the six they’ve had him. And not the 8 (or 9 if his option vests) that will comprise his Sox tenure…
  21. How does 2020 go with Betts? The Sox won 24 games. Throw Mookie’s 3.6 bWAR into the mix and subtract Verdugo’s 1.2 bWAR, and you’re looking at “improving” from 24-36 to 26-34 or 27-33. Then Betts leaves to be a free agent. THAT is the alternative path…
  22. The pundits at the time expected the Sox to land May, Lux and Verdugo. That’s insanely unrealistic for one year of any player…
  23. I would strongly suspect Bloom aired about arms. But LA was reluctant to deal them for one year of Betts plus Price at cost. Isn’t that why Minnesota got involved in the first place?
  24. If the Sox had the option of keeping Betts, I’d be more inclined to agree. But once negotiations failed, money was instead spent on Bogaerts and Sale, and ownership decreed getting under the tax limit, the idea of keeping Betts completely vanished. Given the limited offers, the Sox chose the best option of the two.
  25. Exactly. No Connor Wong. And I still say they should have kept Graterol…
