  1. I’m ok with it. If he was struggling, I’d have given up on him by not…
  2. More money in starting. But relieving is simply easier work…
  3. Not so sure. The Rays did sign Manny Margot for 2 yrs / $19.5mill. He’s not exactly a superstar…
  4. But OTOH, being the 27th ranked staff over the 29th is a small consolation at best. The bottom line is pitching - overstated or not - is a clear issue. It could absolutely get better with the addition of Paxton and the pending return of Crawford and Whitlock. But for how long? The Sox staff - even without Eovaldi - has a large subset of replaced tendons and sore-armed vets that any improvement could easily be temporary…
  5. There’s realism and supposition on both sides. But one side does provide more data…
  6. ERA is really a measure of pitching plus defense plus ballpark. FIP eliminates the defense (albeit questionably) and xFIP normalizes the ballpark factor. None of them are good alone…
  7. That’s why you open with Kelly’s roast beef…
  8. It’s really come down to one poster being optimistic and the other one decrying him for it. Like the Red Sox are reading our posts and concluding “we’re doing ok! Absolutely no need to do anything at all for the rest of the season!!”
  9. Well, the Sox gout “outbid” by geography. Orlando-area native Eflin had his agent take the Sox offer to Tampa, who matched it. Eflin had a clear desire to play near his home. I don’t know if the Sox were even given a chance to counter…
  10. Are you saying the Marlins promoted Eury Perez to appease the 12,000 fans (not a made up number) that flock to their home games? Or were you referring to the Mets as the team that promoted a top 10 prospect to generate fan interest, apparently after the luster wore off their $400mill spending spree this offseason? Has to be one of these two, since the only other top ten prospect with MLB experience is Jordan Walker, and he was demoted. Of course, none of this is a reason to push Marcelo Mayer out of A ball directly into MLB…
  11. Whitlock has at least shown something as a starter and even reels off the occasional great start. He might not be an ace in the making, but the floor shouldn’t be that high anyway. The only real issue for him as a starter is the repeated injuries and health issues…
  12. It’s not the Kluber signing that bothers me. Teams make quick term depth signings all the time and many don’t work out. It’s the repeated insistence that Houck belongs in the rotation when he keeps repeatedly proving he doesn’t…
  13. So you think the Sox should have topped the 4 year $26mill contract for a SP who hasn’t pitched 130 IP in a season since 2017? Do we think he will get healthier as he ages? What if Wacha loses a mph or 2 off his fastball next year? Will you want him around for 2 more seasons?
  14. Bleier is broken. Hopefully he gets on the bus next to Brasier…
  15. I hate that allergen-spreading commerce whore…
  16. None of which answers why he pitches back to back games while Martin and Schreiber watch. Granted both could be injured, sore, or have an upset tummy, and then it makes sense. But are any of those the case? Also most of Brasier’s outings have been low leverage and mop up work. Why not Winckowski, who’s been pitching meaningful innings. And the premise that a 4-1 game in the 6th inning is a lost cause just isn’t true…
  17. It was also a sweeping generalization about who feels pressure, right down to the peanut vendors…
  18. Post 3265, if you like. Or I can wait for another of those “players need to know their roles” posts…
  19. Dalbec makes sense for the Reds, Nationals, Pirates, A’s and probably a couple other teams as a RHH bench bat and possible weak side 1b platoon. He has two marketable skills: a career .855 OPS vs LHP, and a league minimum salary. The return won’t dazzle anyone, but it’s not hard to envision a trade here…
  20. It was 4-1 when Brasier came in. Granted, bases loaded. But also two outs. Brasier had also pitched more recently than fellow right-ganders Martin, Schreiber, and Winckowski. It was the SIXTH INNING. Why use the largely ineffective white flag pitcher? Sure the Sox only had one run, but as it was the top of the inning, they still had 4 innings to make up that deficit. A manager shouldn’t give up in the 6th inning of a three run game…
  21. He got to live his dream and was probably more successful than he thought he would be. But it’s time to move on…
  22. I was also counting divorcées….
  23. As one who has been calling for a Brasier DFA for 4 years, I’m not holding my breath on a Bleier DFA…
  24. But even then, it really comes down to the individual pitcher. If you want to argue it’s tougher to get Whitfield-Jansen-Kiermeier in the ninth than to retire those same 3 hitters in the seventh, that’s one thing. But even then, I’m sure MLB is loaded with pitchers who think they have the upper hand in that situation and the pressure is on the hitters to defeat them…
