  1. And it’s only for 4 years anyway…
  2. They were an 84-78 team. Their mediocrity is no secret…
  3. Qualitative data isn’t the enemy. However you cannot refute statistical data merely by saying “but qualitative data exists.” Provide some…
  4. And you’re not providing anything except supposition and an intense desire to prevent the Sox pitching staff from being mentioned in any fashion except the Ultimate Negative Light. They played in the AL Least, so called becsuse only postseason stats matter. Unless we’re talking about Mookie, whose career .710 postseason OPS is a guaranteed omission. And now - it’s too hot for those Diamondback pitchers? They don’t have a good staff. Without looking it up, can you even name four starting pitchers on that team? If you can’t, don’t sweat it. Torey Lovullo clearly can’t either, because here it is Game 4 of the NLCS with his team trailing and he’s resorted to a bullpen game. Also, if you’re watching this series, you might have also noticed the Diamondbacks defense sucks, too. Do not defend that defense…

    No Kinsler?
  6. I don’t think trading away a 36yo closer signifies punting. Did the Dodgers punt 2022 when they traded Kimbrel? If the new boss likes someone else for the role and figures Jansen makes sense to move for financial reasons and/or can get back a (possibly cheaper?) useful piece, I don’t think that is so ridiculous. Ditto Martin, who could be viewed as a sell high candidate. Point being, until we have an idea who is running the show, the possibilities are limitless…
  7. They may also move short time players we assume are returning, like Jansen or Martin, to free up cash. Really with no one in charge and therefore no comparable history to look at, I don’t think anything is of the table…
  8. And which of these did you do? Otherwise all you’re doing is theorizing said data exists. So far nothing you have said comes even close to supporting and there that the DBacks staff was very good, or even marginally better than even the Sox staff. In fact, the more one looks into it, the more it becomes evident the Sox staff was actually better. I’m not sure why this is hard to believe. No one is saying the Sox had a great pitching staff. Just saying the DBacks didn’t either. In fact both staffs appear to be below average…
  9. Are you really arguing that the Diamondbacks staff took a huge hit by playing 6 games in Colorado? Let’s look at park factors, courtesy of Baseball-Reference Colorado - 110 Fenway - 109 Arizona - 100 I think the 81 games the Sox pitchers pitched in Fenway was far more detrimental to the staff than the 6 games the DBacks pitched three in Denver. And certainly more than the 81 they threw in their “neutral site” ballpark in AZ..
  10. Do not dismiss Cupcake based on his upbringing!
  11. He actually has a decent success rate of the scrap heap. However he did appear to get too reliant on it and was slow to give up on pieces that were clearly not working…
  12. Outside of some childlike enthusiasm and possible over communication issues, Bloom was fine with the media…
  13. Somebody should have told Yorke, who could be in AAA at age 22 next season…
  14. Or I’m not reading as much into this as you. So far, he’s been told he can stick around for his final contract year. He hasn’t been extended. That could be because they plan to promote him. Or it could be because they are hesitant to commit to him with the rest of the front office in disarray. Your history as a conspiracy theorist doesn’t lend as much credibility as you seem to think as to what is etched in stone…
  15. You seem to be writing a lot of that narrative yourself…
  16. CBO: Kim Ng GM: mvp78 New Mgr: Cupcake, a German Shepherd-Border Collie mutt from a Fort Myers area rescue shelter
  17. I think with Yorke, they didn’t have a second round pick (and corresponding slot money). So there is also something to them taking a player they liked at what they felt was their last chance to get him…
  18. That one was bad luck. Or a bad choice of target. However, there were most likely other scenarios where he simply flubbed the negotiation one way or another. I’m surviving with the indecision/inactivity theory, especially at the deadline. I don’t know if it is why Henry fired him, but it is why I would have…
  19. No. It’s silly. The AL East was a combined 449-361. Now against other AL East teams, the divisions aggregate record was .500, because it always is in every sport ever played. Against non-AL East teams, the AL East teams were 88 games over .500. The combined record of the NL West was 404-406, which means again non-NL West teams, the division was under .500. The Diamondbacks pitching was actually comparable to the Red Sox, but good enough in that weak division. They only won 6 more games, while playing in a division of weaker teams. This isn’t that much of a stretch. We were all disappointed with the Sox staff this year, but it wasn’t the worst pitching staff in MLB. And it was helped out by what turned out to be a very good bullpen…

Some context might be required here, too. Like did Kimbrel find himself pitching in non-save situations more often because he lost a closer role due to not pitching well? He had a couple seasons with the Cubs, for example, where this happened…

    Playoffs

Not exactly how you want them to, and also only applicable in road games. Papelbon’s numbers in tie games were actually probably his worst care spoilt, but also only encompass 557 PA over a 12 year career. And I’m guessing a handful of those PA were in his 3 career starts in his rookie year…

    That’s closing?
  23. He was fired. Bloom couldn’t “re-hire” him upon Henry’s recommendation (your theory) if he was still employed and only suspended…

How does one close a tie game?
