  1. I don't really think Abreu is going to make himself a candidate, and I hope that his candidacy doesn't rest on that 10 hit difference (in 500 ABs). Evan Carter still qualifies as a rookie. And his potential teammate Wyatt Langford seems to be another big name. I've seen Langford play a couple times this summer, and I wouldn't call his fielding atrocious, but I think with some work he can get to that level. Colt Keith (Tigers) and Nolan Schanuel (Angels) appear to have starting jobs as well. The NL has the Jacksons (Chourio and Merrill) along with two Japanese imports that could take the award...
  2. I would be ok (not quite happy, but at least I would understand it) if the Sox were holding out on spending to make a run at Juan Soto next year as the marquee name replacement for giving up on Mookie Betts. I do doubt that is the case, however...
  3. I hope not. They've been sued for that three times already and never won a case. If it happens again, will it lead to another expansion?
  4. I wonder who are the most likely other candidates. The NL is fielding some top prospects, all named "Jackson" and all apparently starting in CF. But who else in the AL? Will Jackson Holliday be a candidate? Will each league have a ROY named "Jackson"?
  5. A one billion dollar decrease also means about 25% of what was spent on last year. And about 33% of what was spent this year went to Ohtani and Yamamoto and was spent by one team. This might just be one year, but the market also might speaking very loudly. I seriously doubt the players make up that billion solely with the deals for Montgomery and Clevinger…
  6. Are the Sox even tanking? It seems like they’re just not spending, which isn’t the same. In fact, it’s probably worse. To truly tank, they should also be dealing way any valuable asset. Not only to save money, but also to get some Future Hopeful. That Jansen, Martin and Pivetta are still here, along with a few others, seems more like apathy than actual rebuilding…
  7. In the olden days, call ups after August 31 got no credit for service time. They were still into maintaining control even then…
  8. Snell can come back to free agency shortly without a qualifying; Montgomery still has that option looming…
  9. That’s a huge letdown for a postseason hero without a qualifying offer. I guess the trick this year to making lots of money was play in Japan…
  10. I would never equate “probably” with a 10% chance. So I’ll defer to “non-zero”. I do think his playing in AA last year made me think the path would be quicker…
  11. And so it goes… https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/03/red-sox-chris-murphy-ligament-damage-elbow-surgery.html We knew this was possible. The SP depth was pretty thin even before Murphy…
  12. Let me guess - German Shepherd…
  13. Dogs also never lie. Unless there’s a sunny patch on a sofa…
  14. Hendricks signing may have simply been a pre-emotive strike to replace Jansen and/or Martin. It’s possible Jansen (36) and Martin (37) might not be re-signed, especially if they want multiple years. They should have made a similar move Woodruff…
  15. If Montgomery gets only 4 years, he should fire Boras…
  16. And they already blew the draft pick on Chapman. Better of stockpiling those missing picks in one year than losing multiple first rounders…
  17. He was drafted in June of last year, has already played in AA, and probably debuts this year. He is clearly being fast tracked. Are the complaints now that it still isn’t fast enough? Since he hasn’t even played professional ball for a full year yet, maybe they’re still trying to determine if he is ready. If he debuts in June/July, he isn’t being held back for an extra year; it’s because he’s only played for one year. Nick Yorke looked like a sure thing within a year of getting drafted. Did you want him starting at 2b in 2022?
  18. Are those the ones that made the angels weep?
  19. Does he get into why nothing in nature is blue?
  20. Wong has an option left. Perez might have a chance to make the Sox…
  21. With Teel reaching AA last year, I get not investing in catching right now. Teel could be behind home plate in Fenway by July…
  22. That’s the devil at work!!
  23. Now do we need to do a position by position comp?
  24. On opening day, Story was not on the roster. Gone from last year’s opening day roster: Duvall, Verdugo, Turner, Arroyo, Hernandez, Chang, Tapia, Kluber, Sale, Schreiber, Bleier, Ort Not sure who the newcomers are, but it looks like this off-season the Sox added to the opening day roster: Campbell, Slaten, Weissert, Cron and Romy Gonzalez (Source: Roster Resource) That’s it for the off-season. Although a lot of players have been added from the minors or are hopefully not on the IL. And Grissom will debut this season at some point in the near future…
  25. This is Trevor’s first spring training with Boston. Maybe for once he can hit the ground running…
