    But it’s not so much a question of whether or not they were tanking. They really just didn’t spend anything. But you tank to get your best first round pick, because after that, things start looking more fungible. That McCullers was passed over 40 times was not part of their tanking strategy. I’m just saying they’re a cautionary tale for tanking because their first overall picks proved to be an unsuccessful strategy. It worked great for Washington when Strasburg, Harper and Rendon were out there for them. But those tor of talents aren’t present in every draft. The bust rate of first round picks is just so much higher in MLB that tanking isn’ta good strategy. There are plenty of teams that dial back the spending and wait for their farm. Arguably including Boston the past couple seasons…

    We still have no idea. Breslow could trade a lot of people we don’t think of as moving. Bloom certainly would do that. No one saw trading Benintendi. Or Renfroe. If he does do some dealing, Jansen and Martin (sell high?) are potential candidates, seeing as to how n both have one year left. Ditto Verdugo for the same reason. Duran as well, simply because the OF is crowded and he might want to get a RH bat that has to play somewhere. I wouldn’t be surprised if any of them moved. But I would be if they all did. That is the downside to Breslow. As he has no history, we have nothing to base anything on. But I doubt he sticks so much to the status quo…

    Sure they tanked. But the Astros showed the downside but nothing 67% of the top picks…

    Well, no one tanks to get the 41st pick. Don’t confuse tanking with drafting well…

    But truly tanking is trying to get that top overall pick. That’s the Brass Ring of tanking in any sport. And when they got it, it didn’t work out twice in a three year span. Those other players fell to them and you could find players taken ahead of them who simply didn’t pan out…

    The pre-2017 Astros are a prime example of why not to tank. They had the number one overall pick for 3 consecutive years. Carlos Correa certainly worked out. The other two? They didn’t do quite so well with Mark Appel and Brady Aiken. Basically just wasted some slot bonus money. The Astros did much better with their international signings…

    MLB does that with the rest of the players in the world. They only draft Americans…

    It’s not. At least not for draft picks. Tanking in MLB is when you deal away a bunch of players directly for farm system and potential future help in the minors. But not for draft position…

    Then you’re giving the team that trades west the pick a relatively larger budget to sign fewer players and the acquiring team a smaller budget per to sign more players. The slot money should be considered part of the draft pick…

    And for higher picks, receiving that draft allocation money is contingent on signing the player, so teams do not pay over slot for pick one of ignore pick 2 to stay on budget. Should the team trading the pick (without money) have their budget depend on another team signing the player? If you don’t send the money with the pick, teams with more picks would have less money per to sign them…

    Not Springs? Payamps had a 2.55 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, 4.53 K/BB and was with 1.6 bWAR for Milwaukee this year…

    Payamps actually has a pretty good year in Milwaukee. Sox would have been much better off holding Payamps and jettisoning Ort. Adolis Garcia, twice DFAd, is actually a reason to continue the “bargain basement” scavenging. All Star outfielder with an ALCS MVP under his belt. Makes Troy O’Leary look like Dwayne Hosey…

    Why do we think players will just improve on defense? If Breslow addressed the pitching staff by saying “Brandon Walter will just have to get better”, who would find that acceptable? I think if you expected improvement on any area - hitting, pitching, fielding - fielding is the hardest one to just improve…

    I doubt the predilection towards taking position players was solely a numbers game. It might be worth noting Bloom is the only CBO/GM in recent history to never take a pitcher in the first round…

    Varsho himself was a top catching prospect. He didn’t even wash out at catcher so much as he did excel as a base runner and outfielder. Plus with Jansen and Kirk, the Jays actually had to move a catcher. And they did get a 26yo 5 WAR player. Don’t be swayed by the batting average. Might as well just sum up the Juan Soto trade with “I can’t believe the Padres gave up all those prospects for an outfielder batting .246!!”
