  1. Iglesias is pretty far down on my “I wish we re-signed him” list. And I’d say it’s a safe bet it didn’t come down to “either we re-sign Iglesias or we have to trade Sale”…
  2. How much of that is because when he comes in early, it’s to face better hitters? Kimbrel in the ninth faces whoever is due up. But in the 8th, he’s almost always (probably always) coming in to face better hitters in a key situation. I would expect any pitcher facing, say, nothing but 1-4 hitters in a lineup to do worse than if he just faced a random assortment of the 1-9 hitters…
  3. All the more reason to stick to the analytics that tell you when the game is on the line as opposed to that 1980’s style of bullpen management that dictates “just use a lefty against a lefty and save that closer for the ninth!”
  4. If the Mets defeat Milwaukee today they advance with a rotation headed by Sean Manaea. And only one year after finishing 12 games under .500 with rotation headed by two Hall of Famers…
  5. When you have a top-heavy bullpen, maybe some better manage of the resources can help. A prime example is Judge’s game-winning grand slam. What was the logic there!? “Ok if this 32yo career minor leaguer fresh out of retirement can just get through the toughest 1-2 punch in the AL, then I can use Martin in the 8th for the 4-5-6 hitters and I’ve saved my best reliever to get the 7-8-9 hitters in the ninth.”
  6. Will he settle for having his jugular Severino’d?
  7. Wacha wanted a lot more than what he settled for from San Diego in that odd contract. But numerous teams (not just Boston) turned him away that off-season
  8. I could get excited about this Padre team. First of all, they built a lineup entirely out of shortstops, which is pretty cool. But also, the Padres and Brewers are the only teams still alive that have never won a World Series. (For reasons related to living with Cubs’ fans, I cannot root for the Brewers.) In fact, I don’t think the city of San Diego has ever won any championship. The Chargers never won before the left. The Clippers used to play there, which is as low as it gets. Bring San Diego a non-surfing trophy!
  9. Maybe the Sox could re-unite high school teammates Fried, Flaherty and Giolito…
  10. Skubal last year pitched like Houck this year. I would think many considered him a TOR starter last year, even though it was only the second time he exceeded 0.6 fWAR…
  11. Clearly I was not referring to the Canadian city and when I said TOR, I meant Torrington Municipal Airport in NY…
  12. I don’t see Toronto dumping Gausman’s salary only to take on a more expensive player they have no need for, and Abreu doesn’t fill enough of a need for them to make it worthwhile. Yoshida is going to be difficult to move, and I think he is extremely likely to be back in Boston next season as the starting DH (possibly against RHP only)…
  13. I’m not sure what exactly constitutes the TOR starter the author wantsc and “I know one when I see one” isn’t an answer. Houck was 6th in the AL and 11th in MLB in fWAR. Does that constitute one or not? And if not, why not?
  14. Throwing hard also doesn’t make it a strike. The Marlins once had a RHP named Tayron Guerrero who could routinely hit 103 mph. But he couldn’t routinely get it over the plate…
  15. I do think it’s disingenuous when there is no differentiation between veteran pitchers acquired via trade and pitchers acquired as minor leaguers. Trading for Pedro or Sale isn’t the same as trading for Eduardo Rodríguez or Derek Lowe
  16. Also, blown saves can happen in almost any inning and don’t always result in losses…
  17. Yoshida is having shoulder surgery this off-season. He will be extremely difficult to move. Most likely scenario is he is DHing in Boston for a another season…
  18. Rather than luck, maybe the Sox could try to add depth. They signed two starting pitcher last year that started as much as one game for them. Criswell and Chase Anderson, who started one game. They signed 0 starting pitchers with MLB experience to minor league contracts. They did themselves no favors on the pitching depth front. Until Fitts came up in September, not a single farm product started a game. Priester was their second prospect to get a start, and he started the last game of the year. They added a couple starters midseason - James “Broken Maple” Paxton and Rich “Over The” Hill. Results were as expected for the 4 combined starts. Get some depth, Breslow! You lost two SPs before the season was 3 weeks old last year!! And waited until mid-July to get a replacement that was released by another team..
  19. Story has played in roughly 33% of the Sox games over the past 3 years. Mayer has played in about 60%. Mayer gets injured too much, but he’s no Story…
  20. If Mayer’s issues are injuries, Romero is hardly the alternative. And Arias is 18 and in A ball…
  21. There was Mookie trade speculation in the press back as far as mid-2019…
  22. Mayer lost his Chosen One status to Roman Anthony. This didn’t mean he’s expendable, however. I think Story’s questionable attendance makes him more important than many other prospects…
