  1. Nothing screams “we’re running a small market team!!” louder than trading a star player with 4 years of control left…
  2. Even if the Sox trade Casas, it hardly guarantees they move Devers to 1b. I am also not so sure the Sox have labeled Casas as the “next logical step” in trade bait. They did try to extend him a year ago for a reason
  3. Devers was signed as a 16yo. Very doubtful the Sox had idea where he’d be playing by the time he reached MLB. And moving to 1b isn’t really a big deal and probably inevitable in Devers’ future. Without checking, I’d bet close to half the starting first basemen were moved there from other positions for defensive reasons, either in the minors or st the MLB level..
  4. Neither is repeatedly posting Chris Sale stats and posting over and over how much the Sox are paying him…
  5. Of course Cora will do it with others. Arroyo in RF? Gonzalez to SS? Cordero to 1b? Christian Vazquez to 2b? Dalbec to SS? Dalbec to 1b? Schwarber to 1b? If, as you said, Cora makes out the lineup card, then he has clearly shown he is willing to move players around as he sees fit…
  6. The bottom line is extremely difficult to envision a Yoshida trade, especially without knowing how much the Sox are willing to pay, let alone trying to deal Yoshida to fill a void. Even trading Yoshida for deGrom (owner $112mill over 3 years and hurt all the time, and whom Texas has shown they can win without) doesn’t seem likely. Because despite the $60mill savings, Yoshida does little for the Rangers and if they do move deGrom in a dump, they might find a player who fits their roster better. To me, I still think the most likely scenario is the Cardinals. Bloom liked Yoshida at one point, and still might (and might ultimately prove correct). Yoshida could possibly be the DH in St. Louis if they don’t re-sign Goldschmidt and instead move last years DH (Alec Burleson) to 1b, where he did log some time last year. The wrinkle is how much they like the bat of Willson Contreras. Contreras should never again don catching gear; he’s proven that playing the position is dangerous to him, having gotten injured in each of the past two seasons because he sits too close to the plate and been struck by bats. That it’s happened at least twice shows how little he’s learned from it. So he might be their primary DH. And he’s a better hitter than Yoshida (OPS+ of 129 in the past two years compared to Yoshida’s 111). The only hope here is if Bloom has faith that Yoshida has it in him to improve and outhit Contreras. If Bloom thinks that way, a swap is possible. Both players have roughly $55 mill left over the next 3 seasons. And Contreras would be the much needed RHH DH the Sox need. But I doubt this deal ever happens. Not sure if Bloom is still enamored with Yoshida…
  7. Clearly Cora ignores defensive analytics and it shows. But if he had a viable alternative to Devers at 3b, extremely likely Cora moves him around, like if the Sox had done the right thing last year and signed Matt Chapman (5.4 fWAR/7.1 bWAR). Cora also said Rafaela was his CF at one point and specifically said he would NOT be a SS, but he showed just because he said something doesn’t mean he can’t/won’t change as he needs to.
  8. Did you imagine Hanley looking worse in LF than he did at SS?
  9. The Orioles being out helps, as the Yankees were 5-8 against them this year, their second worst against any opponent (0-4 vs the Mets). But they dominated the Astros (6-1)…
  10. Whether or not Bloom is here any more is irrelevant. The people who gave him the analytic data suggesting the move are still around. I don’t know if Cora is an obstacle or not. If he had a preferable alternative, Devers might have already moved…
  11. Put me at third base and I’ll show you how easy it is…
  12. Did I or did I not say “generally”? And didn’t Devers make many of those throws himself?
  13. There is no such thing as a blown hold. A hold is credited to any pitcher who pitches in a save situation (lead of 3 runs or less or tying run on deck, and also not in line for a win) who maintains a lead but doesn’t finish the game. And if he doesn’t maintain the lead, as it was a save situation, he’s credited with a blown save. They can happen in any inning. A couple years ago, Ryan Brasier (still with Boston) was credited with a blown save in the fifth inning. It’s rare to see one that early, because more often than not, relievers pitching in the fifth are in line for a win and not a save. (It’s not real common to have a lead in the fifth in a game in which you’re on your third pitcher.) But BS are rather common in the 6th through 8th innings. The abomination known as the ghost runner has lead to an increase in blown saves after the ninth, mostly when the visiting scores a single run in the top of the inning and a new pitcher enters the bottom.
  14. As opposed to the constant switches they keep making? Like repeatedly moving CFs to shortstop? Sticking random warm bodies at 1b and in RF? Bloom suggested Devers’ future was at 1b at some point. This originated from outside this forum…
  15. Maybe if he took her out for one of those $200 dinners, she’d change her mind….
  16. And concussion protocol meant: ”How many fingers am I holding up?” ”Wanda?” ”Close enough. You’re clear “
  17. Sure Devers could be worse, but that’s a low bar to limo under. And even if he is, the potential upgrade at 3b still might make it worthwhile. But 1b is generally regarded as the easiest position to field, and probably why a huge chunk, if not the majority of MLB first basemen are hitters who couldn’t field some other position…
  18. Of course it is. Do you not get how Internet forums and, well, baseball off-season discussions generally work? There’s more to baseball than complaining about ownership…
  19. I get your point; your wife doesn’t value bourbon…
  20. If they needed a LHH DH more than a SP, that’s one thing. But they don’t. Even if they break even financially on this deal, they still have to replace Gausman…
