A Realistic View of the 2025 Red Sox: Part I

This should be filed under “be careful what you wish for.” As cheap as Henry has been lately, he’s still outspending most.owners. A few years ago, I recall someone on this forum (Bellhorn, maybe?) wishing the Sox would stop reducing payroll every three years to reset the tax limit. Well, we got that wish. And everyone is happy, right? -

True, except Whitlock likely lacks the clout to call his own shots. Sure he wanted to start, but he had support that made it happen… -
A Realistic View of the 2025 Red Sox: Part I

Why? Trout is owed close to $100mill more than all three of them combined and would be an excuse not to spend for much longer. Plus he might wind up playing fewer games than each of them, despite the longer deal. Less baseball for more money is the exact opposite direction the Sox need… -

One answer is investing more in the bullpen. High-priced starters often get higher AAVs, more years, pitch fewer innings than they used to, and at best can only influence 32 games. Higher priced relief pitchers cost less for fewer years and can influence 50-60 games. We talk about the rotations of the Padres and the Phillies that got them this far. But look at the rotations for the Mets, Tigers, and Guardians, and they’ve all gotten just as far… -

He’s his own worst enemy. He could probably play more often if he moved into a LF/DH role… -
Sure, he’s overpaid, but to call the scouting of him a failure? Seiya Suzuki received a slightly lower deal a year earlier at 2 years younger. Suzuki has adjusted better and is a better fielder, but both players were similar with the bat in Japan. So maybe Yoshida should have gotten 4 yrs/$64mill instead of 5/$90. Overpaid? Somewhat, but the overreactions are a little overboard, to put it mildly…

Article: A Red Sox Fans’ Guide to the 2024 Postseason

I’m all on board with Tanner Scott, who I think should be the Sox top priority. Very hesitant on Fried or Burnes. The latter two will likely want 7-9 years, pitch effectively for maybe 2 or 3, and then spend the remainder of their contracts dragging down the payroll disallowing the Sox from replacing their production. Last year I wanted Sean Manaea, who turned out to be a great signing for the Mets on a one year deal. Manaea will likely now want a long term deal as well. Probably not loooking at 6-8 years, but he might get five. If the Sox want the 2025 Manaea - someone who can pitch effectively and not morph into an albatross for 3-4 (or more!) years, my first thought is Nick Martinez, who had a terrific second half for Cincinnati. Martinez would first have to opt out of his last year (at $12mill), but won’t be pushing the bidding into the 6-7 year range. Hard to see a team going beyond three…- 195 replies

I’d rather have Rendon than Trout. At least his deal has only two years. But I’d rather have Yoshida than Rendon, so maybe the Angels aren’t the team to call… -

Trout has 6 years $223mill left on his contract and can’t stay on the field for 60 games. Also he reportedly insists he’s the starting centerfielder… -

A reboot of the 1984 World Series? With Tarik Skubal playing Jack Morris and Kerry Carpenter as Kirk Gibson. I do think casting Colt Keith and Javier Baez as Whitaker and Trammell were poor choices. I’m ok with Tatis as Tony Gwynn but Jake Cronenworth’s Steve Garvey feels shallow…- 195 replies

I’m definitely in a minority but I wouldn’t mind if KC won and the media ignored the coolest streak in sports as LHRP Will Smith would win his 4th straight title with 4 different teams…- 195 replies

Ok all of this was divulged prior to 2020 when they said they wanted to duplicate the Rays’ methods and start competing with a consistent pipeline of young talent that negated the need for eight-figure hired guns every year. They even hired a Rays’ front office guy to get it going (possible subtle hint). I think most of us didn’t want to believe it would take a few years to get the 29th/30th ranked farm system in place to do this, but in hindsight, this is clearly what happened…
