  1. I’m not so sure about that. Duran has repeatedly shown he’s a defensive question mark. If he was even an above average defensive CF, they could ship Rafaela off for a hard-hitting exit velocity left fielder. Duran is in LF because it’s where his inconsistent defensive abilities are least detrimental…
  2. If we traded Mayer for Marte, how does he bat 7th and play Marte’s position? And it means no platooning Romy at 2b and certainly not with the missing Durbin…
  3. Think of it this way. A bad rotation can destroy a good bullpen. A weak bottom of the lineup can weaken the top of the lineup, but not destroy it…
  4. Offense is more fun to watch - that much is true. No game is more frustrating than watching opposing pitchers keep a weak lineup at bat in a game you’re trailing 1-0 or 2-1. And bad offense can sink a team, like the 2000 Red Sox team that carried 3 pitchers (Pedro, Lowe, Wakefield) having elite seasons without the team going to the postseason. But in today’s bullpen-driven game, weak starting pitching can snd will overexpose more bullpens - even very good ones - leading to games where the offense simply cannot bail you out. A weak offense exposes no other facet of a team…
  5. Playing all 9 positions in one game is usually more of a gimmick than a demonstration of versatility. In the case of Bett Campaneris, in his 19 year career, it was the only game in which he played 4 positions (P, C, 1b and RF) and one of 2 games for a fifth (CF). Shane Halter, Andrew Romine and Scott Sheldon also accomplished this feat. All 5 players who have done it did so in games after September 1st when their team was probably just playing out the string and the manager decided to give the fans something special to see…
  6. Being a Sox fan alone, you should know that’s not true. Most of us grew up with teams and lineups that were at or near the AL in runs scored, but were average to bad at pitching and, in many cases, defense, and those teams missed out on the (admittedly smaller) postseason altogether. Think late 1970’s to early 1980’s. (Maybe you’re too young for those teams?) And they’re hardly the only team to fit this mold. Like most things in baseball, there is no winning formula. Teams can win titles on the backs of pitching, offense, bullpen, or any combination. I suppose if there is any singular universal requirement, it’s probably defense. No matter how well you hit or pitch, it’s tough to keep winning when the opposing team gets 4 or more outs per inning…
  7. That’s not what was said. What was said was that Mookie changed positions without complaining, and in fact even practiced those positions just in case, and did all that because it was for the benefit of the team. Devers, on the other hand, complained about any and every such suggestion. Not the same at all. The original statement was about willingness and attitude, not athleticism. You didn’t even come close to paraphrasing it correctly…
  8. Not as long as Rafaela is healthy. But if that situation changes, he does very likely move there…
  9. Do a lowercase “r”. No need to shout it. Unless you’re Eric Burdon…
  10. It was essentially outs vs bases…
  11. Well, it’s kind of a huge part of slugging percentage, which is half of OPS. The other star you’re thinking of combing all of that (and more) didn exist. It was called Total Average, created by Washington sportswriter Thomas Boswell in 1978. It never caught on because Boswell created his stat before the invention of Microsoft Excel (or even before forerunner Lotus 1-2-3) and it was very difficult t calculate by hand. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_average Maybe Boswell was just ahead of his time…
  12. Doesn’t matter. Even thinking about bacon can cause weight gain. I gained a pound just mentioning it in 2 posts…
  13. Getting hurt doesn’t count. By that logic, no one is guaranteed a roster spot if they’re hurt. The 2b pool got even more shallow with Romy now missing time. If not Mayer, they have plenty of options, but none of them are particularly intimidating, unless the Sox see a resurgent Kristian Campbell and forget he is now an outfielder. Or unless early camp talk about Mikey Romero is more prophetic this year than it is over every season’s past Spring Training rookie pipe dream. Even if Mayer “forgets how to hit,” most of his competition (Sogard, Chung, Kiner-Falefa, Monasterio) never really knew in the first place…
  14. What if his body wants to gorge itself on bacon triple cheeseburgers and milkshakes?
  15. Who is he going to lose it to? Sogard? Monasterio? Romero? I think Mayer is a lock if healthy…
  16. McAdam stated the Sox have no plans to put Tolle or Early in the bullpen…
  17. Either way it leaves one bullpen spot open for the rather unexciting Zack Kelly…
  18. I see two, with one bullpen slot likely slated for Zack Kelly and one bench slot going to ? I am assuming everyone is healthy, Sandoval starts , and Crawford goes to the bullpen, and Oviedo chose to Worcester until needed…
  19. Most likely. But with Romy out, IKF can handle any needed 2b platooning. But what about keeping Mickey Gasper (career MiLB .814 vs LHP, .490 vs MLB LHP but only in 40 PAs) to platoon with Duran at DH in Cincinnati where they should face LHPs Nick Lodolo and Andrew Abbott in games 2 and 3? Or keeping Gasper allows Wong to DH those games with no risk of losing the DH…
  20. The Sox open with Cincinnati, where they should face lefties Lodolo and Abbott. But Houston and SD, the next two opponents, will only have RHP in the rotation. So against Lodolo and Abbott, do they keep Duran in the third spot? Drop him down? Or use a RHH DH? And who is that? Eaton? Wong? I think they’re better off with Duran at DH than Eaton. I could see Wong, but that’s a little risky. (Although with Contreras, IKF, and possibly Siegler, they are not short in emergency catchers.). Romy doesn’t solve this as he is likely to platoon with a Mayer anyway….
  21. But he signed a deal in time to miss the entire contract with an injury…
  22. Is Giolito asking for the world plus the next one or something? There’s no reason for him to be still unsigned…
  23. I thought more like a gap power guy. And he came right out of the gate with a .874 OPS that first year…
