  1. Why? Yoshida’s contract is hardly prohibitive. Especially if people live in a fantasy world that if the Sox save that money, they’ll spend it elsewhere…
  2. Speaking for Castillo AND changing the deal midstream?!?! I mean, maybe Castillo isnt exactly thrilled with the Mariners this off-season, where there biggest acquisition is a debate between Shintaro Fujinami or Miles Mastrobuoni…
  3. Why not? Im not a big fan of platoons, because it often compromises defense at some point (except DH platoons, which are probably the most common ones). But overall, platoons are a very widespread solution employed by plenty of teams, including the Sox in recent years. And they don’t happen by accident. Refsnyder has only one outstanding baseball skill - the ability to crush LHP - and beyond that he’s a borderline MLB. talent at his best. But why not exploit that one skill when necessary…
  4. DH platoon with Yoshida would be my guess. Cora will find a place for him…
  5. 1. Losing O’Neill against LHP could be big, but last year the Sox faced a LHSP 43 times while facing a RHSP 119 times. Why is the focus on the 43 games? 2. Abreu only started 6 games vs LHSP last year, and I have my doubts Cora increases that number by much, if at all, unless injuries force his hand. It looks like Refsnyder is his platoon partner in the OF, and since Cora did re-arrange the outfielders last year to keep Ref’s poor D from being exploited, I would imagine that continues. 3. Romy could get more time against LHSP next year. Gonzalez did crush LHP last year with an OPS over .900, and I would expect his performance against them contributed to his second overall finish on the Sox in exit velocity. 4. Fans don’t like platoons for large market teams, and they are more prevalent on teams with lower payrolls. Cora clearly has no issue with them. Don’t rely on Roster Resource for their platoon info; that site definitely loves suggesting them everywhere possible..
  6. But those changes are inevitable and this year the Sox are more prepared than in the past few. For example, last year the Dodgers used 22 position players and 38 pitchers, a far cry from the 13 of each on their opening day roster…
  7. Sure, until someone gets hurt. Happens every year. All three of Story, Casas and Devers had injuries last year…
  8. Kyle Finnegan needs a job…
  9. Grissom starts the year in Worcester, but he had very limited time last year to show what he can do. Atlanta clearly valued his bat, which was the tool that catapulted him through their minors in just a couple seasons. I wouldn’t give up on him just yet…
  10. Injuries will be a factor, since they are every year. And roster changes are even more frequent. Essentially you said Bregman will play second base until he doesn’t. Hard to argue with that…
  11. Cora factor. If he wanted Boston, he had his chance back in 2012 when the Sox drafted him and his best buddy Blake Swihart was already in the organization. But he opted for LSU instead…
  12. I’m also looking at the Dodgers. They have a Gold Glove 2b in CF and a Gold Glove RF at SS. And they have a player who was a rookie last year that posted an .886 OPS in the NLCS, but whose starting position next year appears to be RF for the Oklahoma City Comets. Playing good defenders out of position and hording depth above your best prospects? Fans might not like the Sox doing it, but it’s the Dodger way…
  13. The Sox should hold Yoshida. He can hit. And right now he is part of their depth, which is a good thing. Or they could trade him, watch injuries kick in, and be forced to sign some Jake Lamb type so he can take meaningful at bats…
  14. It’s odd that many think Bregman can’t handle 2b, but none of us know him or have watched him as much as Cora, who thinks the opposite. Im deferring to Cora here, but these things do have a way of working out…
  15. And this from someone who’s been a heavy critic since November. Your objectivity is noted…
  16. Alonso clogs up the 1b/DH situation even further. Bregman at least has middle infield experience, albeit mostly in college and the lower minors. And I stand by my next prediction for Bregman, which is he will eventually take over 3b, either pushing Devers into the 1b/DH mix or if Devers gets hurt. The Sox OF is fine. Rafaela is not much of a hitter, but an elite defensive OF. And we also still have Roman Anthony…
  17. I wanted that bat to play 3rd and hit right-handed and not be Nolan Arenado at all or be Alex Bregman for the next 6-7 years. Ok so I was rather picky, but they nailed my wish list, even if they danced around that last part, and probably won’t play Bregman at third for a while…
  18. The sites differ greatly on the oWAR values for O’Neill’s and Wong…
  19. I backtracked in my head and simplified that answer. The splits stuff was often cited as a reason the Sox needed him. Left-handed splits only, of course. On baseball-reference (the site that actually has oWAR), O’Neill was fourth in oWAR, just behind Connor Wong. O’Neill was 0.5 oWAR ahead of David Hamilton, who had 150 less PA…
  20. Total bases tell more about a hitter. RBIs depend on other hitters. And if you like RBIs, O’Neill should be a guy you want to move.
  21. We were talking about O’Neill’s RBI and Thats some factual data for those that prefer RBIs…
  22. Like moving a Gold Glove 1b in Kevin Youkilis back to 3b because you let go your future Hall of Fame third baseman with more Gold Gloves than King Midas in a sporting goods store in order to acquire some big name first baseman? That kinda silly season? Compared to what we’ve seen the Sox do, this is small potatoes. And we’re trying to be the Dodgers, remember? That team that had a Gold Glove 2b in CF last year while their DRS King in CF was manning 2b. And their Gold Glove RF is playin SS…
  23. I think he will start the season there. I also think he will not finish the season there...
  24. Maybe he does not matric well, as you say. He just seems like an odd choice to have been non-tendered in the first place, given that I think he is the first player ever to be selected to an All Star team and then get non-tendered later than same year. The complete lack of rumors about him is the most surprising. Small link to the DBacks this week, but then they went and signed Kendall "Back from The" Graveman...
  25. If you're on a Red Sox forum from November through March, you clearly have a love for the Red Sox that might require a 12 step program...
