    First of all, not the point. (But it is a union business.) Second, changing positions in MLB is extremely common. I would doubt every single player who changes was ordered to do so. (Wasn’t Story approached about 2b? Or A-Rod when he went to third?)) And certainly players have refused without derailing their team. Some have, with Mike Trout being a notable example. But giving them the option first isn’t always so bad. Heck some might think it’s not really an option, but at least appreciate they were approached about it…

    Why is it comparable to an asylum? Are there even asylums any more? I mean, there are plenty of employee-owned businesses out there that do just fine. Not to mention Union shops where employees have a say. What is this obsession with comparing management concern to the practically defunct concept of an asylum?

    Not if he thinks his performance will drag the team down. There is nothing wrong with asking a player to try anew position; it happens all the time around MLB. If the player isn’t interested, it could also send the message that management cares about their opinions.

    1b Campbell, 2b Story, SS Mayer, 3b Bregman? I could get used to that alignment quickly. It might even be the best possible defensive arrangement…

    I’ve seen articles suggesting demoting Casas and moving Story to 1b. Seems odd to me. If Bregman opts out, the Sox can always return Devers to 3b and Yoshida (who remains both alive and under contract) to DH. Certainly not the optimal defensive arrangement, but it is possible. But I don’t think Bregman will opt after this year. Maybe after 2026; $40mill is a lot to walk away from and it will be easier to recoup (most of?) the final year at $40mill over the $80mill, even at one year older…

    Casas will be fine. I expect him to take off shortly, now that I’ve officially dropped him from my fantasy team…

    Duran will appeal to lots of teams since he’s still relatively cheap. But Abreu is younger, cheaper and a better defender who’s under control longer. I’m surprised Abreu wasn’t dealt over the winter…

    Game threads are filled with impulsive reactions and brief instantaneous emotional outbursts. A lot of them look differently after even a small amount of reflection…

    There seem to be some clinging to the motion he has to go at any cost, which is ridiculous. Worst case scenario is he gets demoted to Worcester and occupies a 40 man roster slot. I’d rather he be kept as depth than paid heavily to hit against Boston. And I certainly wouldn’t attach Mayer or Anthony to any deal to unload him…

    I agree. I just point out they can easily afford him, including his subsequent cap hits. Whether or not they should have afforded him in the first place is another argument, especially considering they were not spending very heavily at that time when compared to their financial peers. There is the argument his $90mill contract COULD have been better spent, but the obvious counter is,WOULD it have been better spent? Assuming it was spent at all? I got the impression they targeted him as opposed to deciding he could fit into the budget…

    I could argue that he could be useful beyond a simple Devers injury. While both he and Devers are bad defenders, it’s not an automatic loss to put one in the field. Not sure why it matters about whether or not anyone wants a Devers injury. Unpopular or not, key injuries happen. And if Devers were to get hurt, would the Six be better off or worse off with Yoshida?

    Oh that’s right. I forgot you were involved in those negotiations. I forgot - on what page was the clause where he got to play 3b in perpetuity? And while you were telling me what the Red Sox WOULD do, it turns out they agreed with me about what they SHOULD do. And it’s really weird that you’re still clinging to being right the Sox keeping Devers at third. Especially since I seriously doubt I saw the need to move Devers off third before the Sox did. It’s an extremely safe bet a Devers move was in their plans LONG before he signed that deal…

    That was the point - that they won despite those contracts. Most people probably forgot they were all with the team. Yoshida isn’t dragging this team down, despite the weird opinions to the contrary. And his presence might be useful…

    And the Sox are worth $4.7billion, meaning they have 0.004% of their assets tied up in Yoshida. I get fan level concern, but until the Sox think it’s an issue, maybe it isn’t. I can tell you at a bare minimum, it’s not an issue until both make the MLB roster at once. If the Sox are going to ignore payroll for a bit - something they have not done in the past 6 years - this problem can be a temporary blip. Don’t forget the contracts the Sox gave to Hanley, Sandoval and Rusney included rings…

    And you’d be 100% incorrect, because Yoshida isn’t here yet. Is it a potential issue? Maybe. Right now it’s proof of the need for depth, because we have one active DH and one injured/recovering one…

    Well, you repeatedly told us the Red Sox “signed Devers to play 3b” and ridiculed anyone who said he should move, going back to some of those folks with a brilliant yet unpopular brand of foresight to ask the Sox to sign Matt Chapman (8.0 bWAR, .793 OPS in 2 years in SF). They signed Devers, like anyone else, to play baseball in whatever capacity he’s told. Signing Bregman just drove this point home, that no one owns a position with the team…

    But this problem has manifested itself with a weak-fielding first baseman. And so far, that’s it. We do like projecting future logjams, don’t we?
