If you're looking at an NBA player for an MLB team, hitting shouldn't even come up. Even the most athletic players have very large strike Zones they would struggle to protect. I'd think teams would be better off getting someone like Tyson Chandler or Alex Len who could generate significant moment with longer arms and get some serious velocity on a fastball, not to mention would have a huge stride cutting their release point down to maybe 50 feet from home plate. Amir Garrett of the Reds isn't as tall but basically does the same thing. As the most common physical attribute associated with basketball players is height, that is where you should look for the advantage. I would think very few NBA players can hit MLB pitching, And the ones who actually can are probably not the big name basketball superstars you think of. .. -
I'm surprised he is still out there. His has an ERA+ of 102 over the last three seasons. That's better than Alex Cobb over that same stretch. And who would complain if we brought in Alex Cobb?

Clay had certainly garnered his share of enemies among Sox fans. The same people who want Bryce Brentz to succeed and who think any BA top 100 prospect who flops was a wasted asset somehow can't forgive Clay for actually panning out to some degree. A minor league deal does no harm but to some even that is too much

Exactly. I wouldn't sign any basketball player for an MLB team in the same way I wouldn't try fill a roster spot on an NBA team with a baseball player. ..

I agree that Duda will be a better value and that Duda plus whoever that $17million difference is spent on will combine for a better season than Hosmer...

He's also a much better pitcher now than when he was 2 years out of high school. Using only his career ERA does treat all those seasons equally. And really even his first year on Boston ended VERY strong after a DL trip...

Yeah but most of the players paid for past performance don't live up to it in the bigger deal. Hanley. Sandoval. Etc. This was one of those deals where the hope was the pitcher would perform while actually making the big money. ...

How about we reduce the penalty to not calling him "Pork chop" for a week and you go buy yourself a beer and think about what you did while enjoying the smooth rich flavor. Unless you are under 21. Then you need your parents to buy you that beer....

I agree Marrero is the best defender of th he five (barely ahead of Lin), but his overall game might be the worst. Really that choice for me is Marrero or Holt. I'm not much of a Holt fan, but he might be better than Marrero...

Actually plenty of players have embraced the advanced metrics to improve their game. Josh Reddick, for example,gave a lengthy interview on the subject. Gabe Kapler did one also where he was shocked at the amont if data he was asked to go over for a minor league manager position. Again, minor league. Really it seems like the only reason players avoid fangraphs stats is to embrace the even more modern Stat Cast, which is more about physics and attempts to teach players to optimize their launch angle and exit velocity. Teams even have bats with sensors in them that help players optimize their swings...

To me the metrics make it a level field for comparing. Watching one shortstop 150 times and another one 6 times shouldn't lead anyone to conclude whose better. But the best thing about metrics is they made me and a lot of other people look beyond errors and fielding percentage, which was a very common method of evaluating defense, and easily the most flawed. Eye Test defense is OK, but it has far more flaws than metrics do...

Manny was bad all around. But when he was good, he was good. Not the best highlight reel defense, but maximum bonus points awarded for high-fiving a fan and still completing the double play...
