  1. I really don't see why they are so adamant about a left-hander. Is Adam Lind really going to help this offense more than Napoli?
  2. Possible. DD doesn't have some sort of long histry with platoons and has usually had a full tim DH. But he might try something new. Another possibility might be Matt Holliday, whose OPS+ over the past three years is better than Beltran's. Although unlike Beltran, Holliday's is definitely trending the wrong way..
  3. Personally I've always felt Jimmie Foxx was one of the most, if not the flat out most underrated player in MLB history. This is a guy who was second in all time home runs when he retired, youngest to 500 HRs before A-Rod. And remains the only player in MLB history to hit 50 home runs on a team that didn't hit 100...
  4. Got to be Vern Stephens
  5. Dombrowski might be more preoccupied with figuring out how to squeeze Encarnacion under the limit
  6. But then isn't there a strong correlation between the teams with the better hitting catchers and the teams that made the post-season?
  7. Ross will get attention and then be paid more money than he deserves. And for all that, who knows how often he even pitches? Not to mention whoever signs him might be disappointed unless they start playing their home games in Petco. Johnson has never amounted to much, but the first question I have is "is he better than Henry Owens?" If so, a minor league deal might not be a bad idea.
  8. Best record might at least add the element of making the last game or two important for a team that has already clinched. Now not only do they need to ensure best record for their own league, but the other league as well. I guess a good question here is why do people so readily accept using best record to determine home field in the LCS but question it for the World Series?
  9. Yet the NBA and NFL use that same method with no complaints...
  10. On the other hand, there may be a bullpen crunch. Kimbrel, Kelly, and Barnes have spots. Barring injuries, one of the six starters (Wright?) takes a fourth. If the Sox add two relievers - and other than a DH, what else will they add? - that leaves one bullpen slot for Abad, Ross, Elias and Hembree. None can be demoted without clearing waivers. Even if the Sox only add one reliever, that probably means Abad and Ross grab the last two spots. Elias' chances of making the Sox might be too dependent on the health of everyone else. Ditto Hembree...
  11. Sandoval went into ST as the favorite, but came out of ST deposed and hidden away on the DL all year. And I think the whole thing was someone giving him a season long "timeout". But the names Sandoval, Shaw and Holt were all options last year. This year they will fight or the honor of holding down the fort until Moncada's Super Two date passes...
  12. Now HERE is your depth http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/12/padres-non-tender-tyson-ross-five-others.html While Sox fans are wondering why the team won't go out and get rehabbing AAAA arms like Brandon Workman and Rubby de la Rosa, the Padres have put rehabbing Tyson Ross and Erik Johnson (who I believe is not rehabbing anything) back on the market...
  13. Yeah that made so much more sense. I think home field advantage should go to whichever team has more players named "Logan." If neither team has a Logan, then the tiebreaker shall be number of Chads...
  14. Not to mention, before using the All Star game, home field was determined in the World Series and in both LCS by alternating years. This was the dumbest method of all. And least fair, because teams in the AL East and NL West could NEVER have home field throughout the entire post-season....
  15. More of a TJ candidate...
  16. There really isn't all that much risk. Not many pitchers who missed all of 2015 are going to grab the attention of other teams, and the ones who do will be pitchers with more talent and experience than Brandon Workman. While the Sox do need AAA pitching depth, Brandon Workman himself may not be a necessity. And he isn't even gone yet, either...
  17. But if the Sox re-sign him to a minor league deal, they get back a 40-man roster spot. Really Workman is in the same price range, talent and experience level as a lot of other pitchers who are or will be free agents very soon. There is no rush to act here...
  18. No different than last year. Except now maybe Moncada is in the mix...
  19. Well, they know they have someone who hasn't pitched since 2014. I'd be surprised if they offered him arbitration. But I wouldn't be surprised if they non-tendered him and brought him back on a minor league deal. As he hasn't pitched in so long, it's not like exposing him to free agency will guarantee a lot of better offers from other teams...
  20. I'd actually be surprised if the Sox did anything at all about third base. We have Sandoval, Shaw, Holt and possibly Moncada in the mix. All have flaws, but all have had good stretches there as well (except Moncada so far). The need for a 3B might be more in the eyes of the fans than the front office...
  21. McCutchen never said he wouldn't move to LF. He said he'd be willing to talk about a position change "at the right time." Despite his poor scores on defensive metrics last season, McCutchen still feels he is capable of playing center, and that position is where hr is most comfortable. While there could br debate there, he does appear to realize a move to a corner will be inevitable at some point ..
  22. Of course we needed a pitcher. At then time of that deal, the Sox were a second place team that had a rotation featuring both Felix Doubront snd Brandon Workman...
  23. Maybe MLB will get rid of some of their other stupid rules, like actually playing under the same rules in both leagues.
  24. Oh good. They decided to make it even more complicated.
