Well if there was ever a year to not be able to afford free agents, this is it. I'm hoping they get involved with some of the better non-closing relievers like Ziegler and the underrated Daniel Hudson. If they do that, they potentially have sufficient trade chips to get a DH on the trading block. It certainly wouldn't be a bat with the same potential impact as Encarnacion, but a reasonable alternative might be found, even if it's just a LHH to platoon with Young. ( I do hate platoons. )

Hos floor is pretty low, as he isn't Bradley or Betts defensively. I think he'll be a good player and the biggest question id "when"? Will he be one right away? Or need some time?

Bottom line - Swihart will be starting, very likely at catcher, wherever he is. Not likely Boston, but Pawtucket or another organization are both in play here. Hope the Sox keep him, but he absolutely is a good trade target for another team. Personally I hate platoons. But in the wake of the Luxury Tax threshold I could see the Sox using one at DH this year. I don't consider it likely, but can't see how it isn't on the radar. ..

I've always said a team needs 7-10 starting pitchers before the season starts, and really, even that number can be a little light. As it stands now, I don't think Dombrowski is going to add to the MLB rotation. But i do hope he adds to the depth of the PPawtucket rotation. I haven't given up on Owens or Johnson yet, but I would like to see the Sox push both a little further back on the depth chart. And do so with more than just Sean O'Sullivan. ...

Sarcasm? That's not even remotely how sarcasm works. And if not all insults are attacks on character, that's a distinction I'd like to hear. Tell you what - you explain the difference between "insult" and "attacks on character" to me, and I'll explain how sarcasm works to you. And for free, I'll throw in the difference between "projecting" and "predicting." And then maybe I will also even explain how you're being a dick, although I'm worried that's a little too much all at once...

Right. It cuts into your busy schedule of wishing death on people with addiction issues and trying to convince the rest of the world the phrase "fat slob" is purely related to a physical condition and not an insult in any way...

With what aspect of the situations of Craig and Castillo would the MLBPA disapprove? Castillo and Craig are both receiving every penny they were promised, and the primary reason neither is on any MLB roster is related to their performance. And as neither has really even performed all that well at the minor league level, there is no reason to believe their current roster status is the primary hindrance in a trade. Both have the options of requesting their contract to be voided and declaring free agency. The Red Sox would certainly oblige, yet neither has. I'm not surprised by this, but if either one wants to get back to MLB, both are aware of the obstacles...

The easiest solution would be to DFA Sandoval and remove him from the 40 man roster like Castillo and Craig. No one will claim him. A distinct possibility is a trade of Buchholz, who, if the Sox hadn't picked up his option, would be the best free agent starting pitcher this year after 36yo Rich Hill....

Technically, I'm "predicting," not projecting. They are not remotely the same. And this prediction is based on past experience, which actually makes it "learning." Are you telling me you've never seen posts negating all the positivity of a Sox prospect before based solely on the fact that he wasn't an immediate success? Or just trying to look down on people?

Followed by endless caterwauling from Sox fans about how disappointing he is, how he should have been traded when he had value, how he was never a real prospect like other teams have, and how he is yet another in a long line of Dox top prospects who flopped, like Lars Anderson, Tony Blanco and Steve Lomasney...

Technically it's the debt -equity ratio portion of the CBA that works against lower revenue teams. Basically teams who spent more than they take in through some needlessly complicated formula. This is why the Tigers are unloading contracts (and why they probably let Dombrowski go).

Vazquez looks like a prototypical backup catcher to me, which I don't consider an insult. He's a major league caliber player with a clear role. I don't think Leon is that much better, and I think (and said repeatedly on BDC) that his offense last year was BABIP-fueled unsustainibility. So at some point it is likely that replacing one of these guys not only happens but is also preferable and a worthwhile upgrade. ..

I'd pass on most of the FAULT options. I could see going for Encarnacion if the CBA gives the Sox enough financial breathing room. It seems silly to bypass him for fear of the bad years at the end when he is older to take on Beltran whose already in those years. Beyond him, I could see maybe looking at a lefty hitter to platoon with Young such as Brandon Moss. Adam Lind is another who fits the bill, but I'm not a big fan. Logan Morrison does too, and he has good career numbers at Fenway, but overall his career has really been a colossal disappointment. I'm not even sure he's an upgrade over Shaw...

That quote does nothing of the sort. So you are correct he is not comparing the two situations. He is referring to the capacity with which the Red Sox organization will stand by their players, and cited Lester as an example...

While no one confirmed or denied Sandoval as having an eating disorder, you were thr one who brought up the comparison to opioid addiction and labeled it solely the fault of the addict. At least maintain accountability for your metaphors, as incorrect as they may be. And also whether or not you like or understand addiction, we can all acknowledge that the subject isn't always relevant when talking baseball. I'd love to see Sandoval gone and never wanted him in Boston ever. The only way othrt than an unlikely release is probably a bad contract swap. The "best" fit might be to Atlanta for Matt Kemp. If the Braves keepthe mmoney from SD and LA, they fill 3b, open a spot for Mallex Smith, and get Sandoval for about $11million per. The Sox get Kemp, not an ideal Fenway hitter but a better DH candidate than Sandoval or Shaw or Young....

Sandoval isn't going anywhere so the best hope right now is that 2015 was simply a bad season for him all around. He's always been fat, so this might be irrelevant to his poor season, or it might be that he finds himself incapable of playing at the same level he used to as he gets older while maintaining his poor conditioning. Right now we can only hope it was a bad season or that the Sox give up on him quickly. While he is expensive, I really hope an MLB GM can build a 25 man roster as easily with $172mill as easily as he can with $19189million. Or whatever the new CBA uses as it's limits.

Well if it is an "addiction," it's not necessarily voluntary. You mentioned opiods, which includes an extremely large number of addictive prescription drugs including Oxycintin and Fentanyl. Most people who are addicted to these drugs started out by getting them legitimately, yet the problem persists. But in the US, we do like to blame people for their problems. Got breast cancer? We have charities. Got colon cancer? Same. Got lung cancer? Too bad. Your own ffault. Despite that everyone knows smoking isn't the only cause. But no one wants to help non-smoking cancer patients and risk helping smokers at the same time...

You know that many other countries treat drug addictions as diseases and health problems. The US is in the minority that decides these people are criminals who need to be blamed
