    The MLBPA isn’t a real union. It’s not like they have sympathy strikes to support, say, the UAW. And really, the “labor struggles” in MLB boil down to about a thousand people fighting on how to divide up several billion dollars...

    The amazing thing was Buckner was hardly alone in this type of play, but even with his great career, nothing he did outshined it. Chris Webber isn’t remembered solely for his phantom timeout in the NCAA title game that likely cost Michigan the title. Mariano Rivera isn’t remembered for throwing away Jay Bell’s sacrifice bunt and probably costing the Yankees the 2001 World Series. Tony Fernandez isn’t remembered for his extremely costly error in the 11th inning of game 7 of the 1997 World Series. The closest comp is the aforementioned Scott Norwood’s missed field goal (which was a 47 yard attempt. When did that become a given?)

    It is NEVER time to release even reasonably productive Major Leaguers to clear a path for Marco Hernandez. Marco will have to wait for an injury to another player before he gets another chance to get promoted to MLB and showcase his ability for season-ending injuries...

    Dustin is one of only two players in MLB history to win ROY, MVP, a Gold Glove, and a Silver Slugger all within his first two seasons in MLB. (Ichiro was the other.)

    While the Sox do have spending limits, there are some $225mill spent on non-Pedroia players. And if free agency has taught you nothing else, you should have learned by now that merely spending on a free agent doesn’t always help the team. The list is long and affects nearly every team nearly every year. If it helps, think of spending $14 mill on Pedroia as a preventive measure that will keep DD from wasting it on another player who not only won’t help the team, but also won’t be gone in two years. The whole coach angle, if both sides wasn’t it, isn’t going to affect the luxury tax unless Pedroia willingly gives up about $25mill that the Sox agreed to pay him despite knowing the risks. And considering Pedroia did win an MVP award while making league minimum, I’d say he earned it. Let’s call it overdue backpay...

    And the concerns over why this is a big deal to a lot of people. The Sox can’t do anything like buy him out. If they could, they would have done it with Sandoval. Pedroia isn’t going to play again and will probably spend 2+ years on the 60 day DL, where he takes no 25 man nor 40 man roster spots from anyone. He will get paid because both parties agreed on this years ago and both knew well in advance something like this was possible. We’ve seen the Sox ride out unproductive contracts before. We will again. This is hardly some sort of freakish situation. And the best solution the only one - ride out the deal and stop whining. Why is this one getting so much bizarre attention and so many unique “solution” proposals?

    2012 was the last year of Jenks’ 2 year deal anyway. He signed a 2year $12mill contract. Jenks did sue the hospital where his surgery was performed for $5mill, but I don’t think the Sox paid that amount in lieu of his salary. Likely Jenks collected both. Contract buyouts are common in the NBA, but not in MLB. We’ve all seen the Sox ride out unproductive contracts before, including Crawford, Lansing and Sandoval (If MLB contract buyouts were possible, someone tell me why none of these were.) Not sure why this Pedroia deal requires this much attention...

    So if the first inning is the most important, the Sox need to start employing the “opener” strategy with their best reliever. So mal says the first inning is the most important and galehouse thinks the 9th inning is. I say we spilt the difference and make the fifth inning the most important...

    Suggesting a 30 year commitment to resolve a “problem” that will go away in 2 years isn’t absurd? Maybe the Sox should have signed Sandoval to a 51 year consultant contract as well...

    The Sox aren’t playing Chavis at 2b because having Pedroia prevents them from getting another player; they’re playing Chavis at 2b to get his bat in the lineup and there’s nowhere else to play him on the field. I don’t get all this whining about Pedroia trying to come back repeatedly if he’s done. Let him try. He’ll probably spend 2 1/2 years on the 60 day DL where he takes no roster spots from anyone at any level, and he won’t prevent the Sox from signing Scooter Gennett or whoever among the available players. Let Pedroia try and pay him what both parties agreed he was worth and stop pretending this is the only hamstring contract in MLB. He’s not hurting anyone. Except maybe his own knees...

    Do you really think all this talk about Pedroia is for any other reason other than his blatant refusal to retire and forego his remaining salary and how this will have a negative impact on DD’s ability to spend money....

    Pedroia was injured playing baseball. Even if the “not me” episode was what you’ve always thought, he was still injured playing, unlike Dempster. Pedroia earned his money and the Sox have plenty...

    Pedroia is probably never playing again. It doesn’t seem to bother very many that one of the greatest second basemen in team history is likely done. But a lot of people seem bothered that he is still getting paid...

    I get the impression many think the “right thing” is to allow the Sox to sign another free agent. Because we know THAT method never goes awry...

    So I take it you don’t realize the Sox cannot “buy Pedroia out” and give him another position within the organization in order to circumvent the CBA? Yes, the CBA actually calls hat type of move out and deems it illegal. The Sox are paying Pedroia and it will count against the luxury tax. The only way e doesn’t is if he retires and forfeits $25mill. Can people stop whining about pay Pedroia? If Dombrowski can’t build a MLB team on a paltry $230mill, he should be fired. End of discussion...

    Well according to multiple reports, JBJ was the most actively shopped Sox player this off-season. He makes $8.85mill this year and likely more next year. One could question whether or not the Sox already felt the $8.85mill was too much. He’ll be the Sox CF this year. Next year, he should be making closer to $10mill. He’s going to have to do something to show he’s worth that kind of money or else he probably gets non-tendered...

    Oakland DFAd Fernando Rodney. Never been a big fan of Sir Walk-A-Lot. But DD has. Rodney has been horrendous this year, but it’s only been 14 innings and he was decent as recently as last year. If Rodney’s career isn’t over, Boston is certainly a likely landing spot...

    Naval had a good career. Go look at any Top 100 prospects list from any year. I guarantee you, 40 players on any list you choose either had or will have careers significantly worse than Nava. Maybe even 50 players...

    If he doesn’t get to a .700 OPS, he’s non-tender material. I’m not sure what the actual cutoff is, but I am sure it’s at least .700...

    I would definitely disagree on the Sandoval/Castillo assessment. Sandoval did nothing in Boston to show he was a Major League talent, which is why he was released with a ton of money left on his deal. Castillo did have some offensive struggles related to injury, but also showed himself to be more than capable defensively (which many metrics agreed with). Of course sometimes his injuries were sustained while performing this defense. (Also, Sandoval was NOT a 5/10 player, meeting neither of the two requirements. He was just awful.) The lineup was etched in stone, but the bullpen wasn’t. Even you admit it was a gamble to rely on Barnes and Brasier. Brasier, who had all of 33IP in the past 6 seasons combined, was a much bigger gamble. As was DD’s longtime man-crush Colten Brewer, who is showing that these gambles don’t always pay off, at least not immediately. DD has a long history of “winging it” with bullpens. He has had success stories but has also been repeatedly criticized in Detroit for this exact reason. But history has shown, when he needs to save money, the first thing he cuts is the bullpen.
