That does operate on the assumption the Yankees would have drafted Trout. A lot of teams passed on him, including the Angels once. The Nationals passed on him to select Drew Storen. Imagine if they selected Trout. Trout, Harper, Strasbourg and Rendon all added in a 3 year stretch? They could have been a monster team...

The White Sox are being blatant about both. Did they really have any other reason for acquiring a mediocre Yonder Alonso right before meeting with Machado? (Ok, apparently they did. It turns out Alonso is an old friend and former college teammate of another player on their radar - Yasmani Grandal.) But the big reason nothing’s happening on this front is itysti early. January is typically the biggest month and February is for stragglers ( and also when Dombrowski typically operates, for those of you waiting on a closer.)

Sandy Leon is a typical MLB backup catcher - good glove, no bat. There are plenty of Sandy Leon’s scattered around MLB. Swihart does have more potential, but it’s really been so long since he did anything, it’s getting to be less and less potential every year. Sure injuries have been a factor, but they are also part of why he has less potential than he did 4 years ago. Can he be dealt? Sure. But not for much . 27yo wild cards who haven’t made it yet but we’re once too prospects are as superfluous in MLB as backup catchers. But hey, teams took shots on the Dustin Ackley’s of the world. Just not heavy shots...

Eric Van makes way to big of a deal about 1.5 fWAR 4 years ago for Swihart and ignores the fact that Caleb Joseph posted 1.4 fWAR that same year in roughly the same playing time. Joseph was non-tendered by the Orioles of all teams and is currently a free agent. Any reason the Mets should be willing to surrender an extremely good SP in Wheeler for a complete gamble in Swihart when Caleb Joseph is available for a minor league deal?

The chances of getting a top prospect for Swihart are nil. Dombrowski tried to pry a good prospect from teams already and failed. And Swihart hasn’t enhanced his worth at all since. Some people love Johnson. No idea why. He isn’t good. And the Mets trading Wheeler for the pair makes ZERO sense, especially since neither has much going for them beyond control and cost. But by that argument, the Sox could also have traded Marcus Walden for Paul Goldschmidt. After all, Walden is cheap and controllable. And do you honestly think for a second if the Mets made Wheeler available, the best offer they’d get is Johndson and Swihart?

To be fair, the population of Tampa is a full year older this year. That 10% drop could represent a death toll. And if the Rays want attendance, then they should change the starting times of home games to 4pm so the local populace can go watch them play right after dinner...

Porcello can’t be replaced for $15mill? Which leads to another question - do the Sox want to? Porcello was specifically mentioned by Dombrowski as a player he would listen to deals for. No mention of “replacement.” But maybe the idea is to replace Porcello with Johnson in the rotation and with a closer on the payroll. If the Sox don’t make a move like this, who do you propose fills out the bullpen for free? Or, what’s the better combo - Porcello starting, Barnes closing in status quo bullpen? Or Johnson starting, Kimbrel closing?

I believe even Bellhorn agrees Swihart won’t get “very much,” as he did say lottery ticket prospect. Vehicle is essentially what Swihart is. I read somewhere Cora wants a defensive 3b, most likely for a late-inning defensive replacement. THAT is the probable ceiling of a Swihart trade...

Or you go crazy!! Trade Mookie Betts and Rick Porcello for Mike Trout. Trout is signed for 3 more years for about $100mill, but his AAV on this contract is only $24mill. Anaheim gets the closest thing to Trout plus a reliable starting pitcher to join the most oft-injured rotation in MLB history. The Sox get 3 years of Trout fir a lower AAV than Betts will get. And somehow, both teams save money...

There is a big difference between saying we have no farm system and the franchise is doomed. That doesn’t mean the unthinkable can’t happen. But how DD replaces the departing free agents will be very important. I wonder if it was a good strategy or a bad one to avoid this particular free agent market...
