  1. I think most players understand trades are part of the job. I suppose when they have kids in school, trades can be tougher on them, though...
  2. AAA or not, Castillo is going to have a good life. But in 2017 he hit 15 HRs in 369 ABs and slugged over .500. His ground ball rates are high, but at the expense of his fly all rates, as he has been hitting line drives at a very good rate. While I do know Dombrowski is not a fan, Castillo is a borderline MLB player who could startt on a second tier team., at worst. And his defensive metrics in limited MLB action are actually outstanding. Give him credit where he deserves it. I compared him to another borderline MLB starter in Jarrod Dyson. I stand by that. Teams don’t consider Dyson the key missing piece. If not for his contract, Castillo could be traded and possibly become a starter for some team somewhere. Sadly for the Sox, he does remain the best MLB-ready outfielder in the system, something that was not changed with the signing of Gorkys-mania...
  3. Rough estimate of the value of one fWAR when Cano signed. It might not be accurate but the point was the escalating values of fWAR can falsely justify longer term deals by increasing the worth of seasons long past...
  4. Are you sure? Our current President/GM signed Miguel Cabrera to a $248mill extension and Justin Verlander to a $180mill extension while he still paying part of the Prince Fielder’s $214mill contract in the books. He doesn’t shy away from big contracts. Verlander was extended before he even traded Fielder...
  5. You do realize that post said nothing detrimental about Dombrowski, right?
  6. Maybe there was. We just didn’t have computers to access it...
  7. If the Sox kept Lester over Porcello, we could FINALLY get a left-handed pitcher into the rotation. Just think - last year the Sox could have opened the season with Sale, Price, Lester, Pomeranz and Rodriguez in the rotation...
  8. He’d probably be in the majors if not for Dombrowski. He’s an extremely good defensive outfielder whose biggest problem is he plays with such reckless abandon, he often injures himself. While he is an impatient hitter, he does have some pop and excellent line drive gap power. But his playing days in Boston are marred by attempts to hit through shoulder injuries (caused by diving for fly balls) that resulted in a crazy high and ultimately ineffective ground ball rate. But reportedly during his audition for the MLB executives, Dombrowski left with the impression he was nothing more than a fourth outfielder. While probably a bit harsh overall, his tendency for injury does relegate him into roles like that. He’s basically Jarrod Dyson with more power...
  9. It’s often noted that when he hit 60 HRs in 1927, he outhomered every team in the AL. But what’s rarely if ever mentioned is Gehrig hit 47 that year and outhomered 4 of the other 7 teams on his own. Or that Lazzeri hit 18 HRs and came in third in the AL. Can you imagine how incredible the 1920s Red Sox-Yankees rivalry would have been if the Sox held on to Ruth, Pennock, Mays, etc.? Two titans battling among all these other Lilliputians...
  10. As far as luxury tax goes, Castillo is a non-factor. And at least this is the final year of Sandoval...
  11. Probably not as good. I’ll take history as it played out...
  12. LL was an easy scapegoat, because he was never very likable. But attributing every bad move to him and labeling him as a star-driven incompetent has to be wildly inaccurate. The man was not only part of the front office of three World Series champions in Boston, but also another one in Baltimore as well as part of the front office of a Super Bowl champion in Washington. He’s one of the most successful executives in American sports’ history. It’s a safe bet he knew what he was doing...
  13. The one inaccuracy from all this old footage that still pervades is our image of Babe Ruth. In every photo or clip of him, he’s rather portly. But from what I’ve heard, early in his career, he was much thinner and more athletic. But as we only have good clips from later in his career, typically in the 1930’s when he was 15+ years into his playing days after he’d put on considerable weight. It also doesn’t help that in movies, he’s portrayed by actors like John Goodman...
  14. He definitely has his strengths that can help any ball club. Also he’s like a VP of Operations now, which is hardly a sinecure role...
  15. Agreed. Also do players usually hold grudges that can’t be bought out when they hit free agency?
  16. He would have had the same title, but DD appeared to want to be more active in some aspects of roster management than his predecessor LL was...
  17. Despite what his detractors like to say about Cherington, he wasn’t fired. In fact Dombrowski was reportedly disappointed tat he quit...
  18. I still don’t know if you can count the Red Sox out on Machado. 1) Dombrowski has tried to get him before. 2) DD is no stranger to making mega-deals. 3) He’s already tried to open conversations for dealing Bogaerts (which opens up Machado’s position) and Porcello (which frees up most of the rest of the money). 4) Signing Machado now alleviates the off-season pressures as players start departing. (DD might even view signing Machado as a pre-emptive replacement against Betts leaving.) I do also doubt he cares about how the fans feel about Machado...
  19. The Phillies are in the running. And St. Louis was willing to take Stanton’s entire contract one year ago. Don’t count them out...
  20. They have money and a solid dirt cheap core. Why not? Think they traded for Yonder Alonso because he’s good at baseball?
  21. Since 2000, the Yankees have picked players from New York or New Jersey twice in the first riund (Eric Duncan, Cito Culver). In that same timeframe they have used 10 first round picks on players from California. Maybe it’s just me, but geography doesn’t seem to be a big factor here. I’m not saying they definitely wouldn’t have picked Trout, but I am saying maybe they valued Slade Heathcott over him...
  22. The one Benintendi made?
  23. 5.6 fWAR times $5mill per Win Above Replacement...
  24. But when Cano signed his contract, 1 fWAR was worth closer to $5mill and he was valued at $28mill for his 5.6 fWAR season. Now, nearly 4 years later, that same season in the past is being valued at $39mill, despite it not getting any better. And that extra $11mill of value goes a long way to making subsequent years look better despite that they might be getting worse. And this only accumulates over the life of the contract. When 1 fWAR is valued at $10mill, which could happen during his deal, his first year has now doubled in value to $56mill, making the later years look more justified when in reality, they may not be...
  25. So you think the cash-flush Phillies are going to get outbid here? If Harper spurns the Phillies for LA, will he get the JD Drew treatment every time he plays there?
