  1. I have my doubts you get a prospect you heard of for Gray...
  2. Billy Hamilton is a free agent, but he only replaces half of Bradley. Pollock is certainly better, but no longer fits the financial picture...
  3. Maybe. But every pitcher on the Sox staff has worked with other catchers at some point and still performed well enough that the Sox sought them out to acquire them...
  4. It is possible Dombrowski is aware of said intangibles or they simply don’t exist to the extent some of us think. I get it. No one wants to touch Vazquez and Leon. But I’m not so sure DD feels that way. Or at the very least, he is keeping the option open...
  5. Maybe being ranked 30 out of 30 in fWAR at the position gave him some reason? Not to mention the 1.7 fWAR the Sox trailed the 29th ranked Diamondbacks (who have already acquired a catcher) by was the largest gap between any two adjacently ranked teams and by a lot - over 1.0 fWAR more than the next highest gap. I can see why he might be a bit eager to upgrade the position. But can he do it within whatever budget constraints he has is another question...
  6. Can he close?
  7. Per MLBTR. No details yet, but they will come...
  8. Well it’s not like he said how long after the 2019 season...
  9. Would you sign Eovaldi over Keuchel if the money was close? Keuchel has a better track record, a Cy Young award, and a much, much better health history and is only 2 years older. His only drawback seems to be that he is left-handed. He might require 5 or 6 years, but that is TBD.
  10. Like with Cervelli, I imagine he’ll have be moving forward with numerous options, most of which will cancel each other out as the chips land. Sign Familia? Maybe no more Herrera or Robertson. That kind of stuff...
  11. I hope not. I would imagine it’s one of several plans he has...
  12. If they bring in another catcher, it’s a safe bet at least one of the current catchers will go. Swihart is already at risk for a roster spot even if the Sox make no more moves for position players...
  13. The strategy here might be to upgrade the catcher position to offset an anticipated drop in the bullpen. Replacing Kimbrel and Kelly might be the right move, but that doesn’t mean whoever steps I i is going to be as effective immediately. And if they aren’t,the team gets worse overall. Vazquez is a good defensive catcher whose minor league offense hasn’t translated to major league success. In this respect, he is really nothing special and has also had difficulty staying healthy. I can see why they might want to upgrade here. By it might not happen for financial reasons if DD brings back Eovaldi. Perhaps that was the downgrade he was anticipating as well...
  14. Probably a plan DD would like to implement, but it’s extremely difficult and a fair amount of luck is involved, which might be why it hasn’t been done in the luxury tax era. The safest strategy is to tweak his successful base and try to repeat, making mad many “upgrades” as he can. This is going to be especially tricky because options to replace Kimbrel and Kelly as successfully simply refuse to come forward and beg for jobs. So DD might have to replace that step down with a step up somewhere else...
  15. Well, the Sox have been the recipient of a lot of catcher chapter since last July, so I’m not surprised. But go for Ramos. Much, much better option...
  16. You didn’t see it? Farrell pushed him over and then whacked his kneecap with a ball peen hammer...
  17. He went 7 on Price. For 28yo Eovaldi, 4 years is a given. The only question really is - will he go five?
  18. Pollock is a free agent. They just need a checkbook and a pen. The Marlins appear to be asking for the moon for Realmuto, along with a second moon to be named later...
  19. The only starters in this market to even think about going 4 years on are Eovaldi and Keuchel...
  20. Someone better tell Dombrowski quick!
  21. Can’t find anything either. But the free agents who sign earlier in the off-season seem more likely to beat the projections. The ones who sign late seem to settle. So if Eovaldi is seeing the early action, maybe he’s seeing the gaudy numbers?...
  22. I’m just delivering the news here. If I were to make it up, we’d be targeting Wilson Ramos...
  23. Not really fair to include Ellsbury, who only had 2 injury-shortened seasons. And one of them was the result of getting run over by Adrian Beltre, who made a habit of breaking the ribs of Sox left fielders...
  24. I’m sure DD is going through the pitching market as well. Eovaldi does appear to be top priority, and hopefully there is a Plan B in place. But I wouldn’t be surprised if he tried to upgrade the catcher spot with a hitter. Cervelli might revert to the 90 OPS+ hitter he has been recently, but even that represents an upgrade of the 69 OPS+ that Vazquez has for his career and the 46 he posted last season...
  25. Morton made 56 starts and pitched over 300 innings in the last two seasons. Is there some health issue with him? He’s from NJ and some speculation has him wanting to return to the northeast (Do these “free agents wants to go home” rumors ever actually happen?). If the Sox can’t sign Eovaldi, Morton is not a bad Plan B...
