  1. Also, the Sox might have a decent MLB shortstop in AA this year with CJ Chatham. But who is the best outfielder in the Sox system? Above A-ball, it’s a battle between Rusney Castillo and Danny Mars, I think. And Rusney is pushing 30...
  2. Porcello can’t be replaced for $15mill? Which leads to another question - do the Sox want to? Porcello was specifically mentioned by Dombrowski as a player he would listen to deals for. No mention of “replacement.” But maybe the idea is to replace Porcello with Johnson in the rotation and with a closer on the payroll. If the Sox don’t make a move like this, who do you propose fills out the bullpen for free? Or, what’s the better combo - Porcello starting, Barnes closing in status quo bullpen? Or Johnson starting, Kimbrel closing?
  3. I believe even Bellhorn agrees Swihart won’t get “very much,” as he did say lottery ticket prospect. Vehicle is essentially what Swihart is. I read somewhere Cora wants a defensive 3b, most likely for a late-inning defensive replacement. THAT is the probable ceiling of a Swihart trade...
  4. Or you go crazy!! Trade Mookie Betts and Rick Porcello for Mike Trout. Trout is signed for 3 more years for about $100mill, but his AAV on this contract is only $24mill. Anaheim gets the closest thing to Trout plus a reliable starting pitcher to join the most oft-injured rotation in MLB history. The Sox get 3 years of Trout fir a lower AAV than Betts will get. And somehow, both teams save money...
  5. A type of trade I would consider one step above a DFA...
  6. There is a big difference between saying we have no farm system and the franchise is doomed. That doesn’t mean the unthinkable can’t happen. But how DD replaces the departing free agents will be very important. I wonder if it was a good strategy or a bad one to avoid this particular free agent market...
  7. You know, all you have to do is answer and it gets tough for me to prove you wrong. I can argue, but nothing definitive. Fine - if you’re GM of the Marlins and you just traded Realmuto without getting a catcher back (the receiving team didn’t have any that were worthwhile). So - where is Swihart on your priority list and what would you give up for him?
  8. In a related side note, the White Sox just acquired Yonder Alonso. Alonso is Machado’s brother-in-law and they’re allegedly tight. Reportedly the White Sox meet with Machado this weekend. Think Alonso goes to that meeting?
  9. Define “modest”. Only yesterday he was a suggested key for getting Zack Wheeler. If you were GM of, oh, let’s say the Oakland A’s. You have very weak catching depth (Josh Phegley, Chris Herrmann) and no real money to spend. And you were a playoff team one year ago and hope to return. Would you target Swihart as a viable catching option? (Keeping in mind your standards already targeted Phegley and Hermannn). Or would you target other options? And what would you give up for Swihart, keeping in mind Caleb Joseph and Nick Hundley can probably be had for similar or less money?
  10. We aren’t replacing them from within without having problems. We might be able to retain one and replace another with a free agent. It will be interesting to see how DD handles it...
  11. It does if you can’t replace them. If Betts, Bogaerts, Martinez, and Sale leave as free agents, you don’t think it will impact the ability of this team to win?
  12. Leon actually looks like the most likely one to be on the Sox in2019. Despite all his shortcomings and the obvious over abundance of mediocre catchers, he was still offered arbitration. That Sale appears to like pitching to him might be a big factor here as well. Vazquez might be the starter, but he’s also most likely to actually get a useful piece in a trade. Swihart has no real reade value except that he has more upside than Leon and makes the least money of the three. If there are no injuries, it’s very possible Swihart gets DFAd before the season starts...
  13. Quick summary - Leon has the lowest ceiling, but Swihart has the lowest floor...
  14. Don’t forget about Gorkys...
  15. The big competition for slugging OF/DH types on the market next year will be Khris Davis and Yasiel Puig. This timing is probably not coincidental. There should be a few notable slugging first basemen - Abreu, Rizzo, Goldschmidt...
  16. Hey last year at this time, all the Sox had done was bring back Mitch Moreland. And it stayed that way for several more weeks...
  17. Only in Tampa, where they can’t afford starting pitching...
  18. Not to mention, using just the bullpen is an awful idea. Using an AAAA starter might cost you one game. Using multiple relievers to cover 9 innings might cost you two or three...
  19. I Why not? There’s no rule that you have to use them all. The more mediocrities you have, the more likely one of them works out...
  20. Per a quick Google search, Miami rejected Chavis and Groome (not together from what I could tell) for Streckenrider already. Swihart certainly isn’t the difference maker there and I doubt Houck is, either...
  21. I’d e hesitant, but I actually think Miami wouldn’t accept that deal anyway. They seem to focus on players a lot closer to MLB than Casas...
  22. But what would constitute an off year for JDM? Winning only one Silver Slugger?
  23. DD reportedly tried to get Streckenrider before and found the asking price to be outrageous...
  24. Sergio Romo and Brad Brach combined to make $7.7mill and returned a combined 1.2 fWAR. Kimbrel and Kelly combined for 2.2 fWAR. If payroll is a concern, the drop off isn’t as much as one might expect. Of corse, Romo’s arm could fall off any second now...
  25. It’s not that he is done spending on the bullpen; he just isn’t chasing longer 8 figure deals right now. MLBTR reported the Sox only offered Kelly 2 years and a lower AAV than Los Angeles, and commented that this does lend support to earlier reports about DD not spending heavy on relievers...
