The closest comparison I can think of would be Brandon Jennings, who signed to play basketball in Italy as opposed to playing college ball. Jennings strongly recommended against doing so afterwards, for multiple reasons. Despite even Italy being more American than Japan, he was not prepared nor mature enough to handle being in a foreign country alone at such a young age, and it was evident even on the court. What Stewart is doing could be infinitely more difficult...

And, also, not a movie. It makes sense for him financially, but moving to a country where you don’t speak the language is difficult enough. And it’s going to be much harder given the immense differences between the Japanese and American cultures. I don’t speak Spanish, but I moved to Mexico for a while in my late 20s. And I was completely lost, despite Mexico being comparatively much more American than Japan. Sure I couldn’t read or pronounce anything, but at least I recognized the letters from the alphabet and a lot of the words are actually similar. Japan is an entirely different matter. Yeah he’ll have a personal translator for all things baseball, but that guy isn’t going to hang around him 24-7. It’s going to be really weird for Carter Stewart...

Porcello’s return will be 100% dependent on his asking price and years. While he has said he wants to return to Boston, they all say that until free agency. Dombrowski did draft him out of high school and stick him in the MLB rotation 2 years later. But also traded him away to Boston (in a deal that sent one of the most durable players in MLB for one of the least). It’s going to come down to finding money. If JDM opts out, the Sox probably save a little bit there (since they’re very likely to bring JDM back at a lower AAV), but the Sox don’t have any major deals coming off the books except for the long-departed Pablo Sandoval. -

Now at the time, harmony was frequently comparing Middlebrooks to Mark Reynolds, which many felt was awful since for some stupid reason, they don’t think Reynolds has had a good career. But if Middlebrooks was comparable to Reynolds, and Chavis is comparable to Middlebrooks, does that mean Chavis should be compared to Reynolds? Might Chavis be looking at a career in which he gets over 6,000 PA, hits 300 HRs and has a career OPS+ of 104? I’ll take that...

I think it’s funny that 33 games get written off as easy because they were not against teams that played in the 2018 postseason. And then 7 more get written off because they were against a team from the 2018 postseason, but not a good one. Exactly what games matter?

But injuries can play a major factor. And even these lesser teams are still made of Major League players capable of getting and staying hot. Odds are very good for the Sox, but you never can tell if some team is just going to put everything together at once. The White Sox and Angels in particular might be two such teams...

AAA is barely a developmental step any more. It’s more used nowadays to stack the bulk of minor league free agents and a chunk of players on the 40 man roster but not the 25 man roster.
