It’s often noted that when he hit 60 HRs in 1927, he outhomered every team in the AL. But what’s rarely if ever mentioned is Gehrig hit 47 that year and outhomered 4 of the other 7 teams on his own. Or that Lazzeri hit 18 HRs and came in third in the AL. Can you imagine how incredible the 1920s Red Sox-Yankees rivalry would have been if the Sox held on to Ruth, Pennock, Mays, etc.? Two titans battling among all these other Lilliputians...

LL was an easy scapegoat, because he was never very likable. But attributing every bad move to him and labeling him as a star-driven incompetent has to be wildly inaccurate. The man was not only part of the front office of three World Series champions in Boston, but also another one in Baltimore as well as part of the front office of a Super Bowl champion in Washington. The one inaccuracy from all this old footage that still pervades is our image of Babe Ruth. In every photo or clip of him, he’s rather portly. But from what I’ve heard, early in his career, he was much thinner and more athletic. But as we only have good clips from later in his career, typically in the 1930’s when he was 15+ years into his playing days after he’d put on considerable weight. It also doesn’t help that in movies, he’s portrayed by actors like John Goodman...

I still don’t know if you can count the Red Sox out on Machado. 1) Dombrowski has tried to get him before. 2) DD is no stranger to making mega-deals. 3) He’s already tried to open conversations for dealing Bogaerts (which opens up Machado’s position) and Porcello (which frees up most of the rest of the money). 4) Signing Machado now alleviates the off-season pressures as players start departing. (DD might even view signing Machado as a pre-emptive replacement against Betts leaving.) I do also doubt he cares about how the fans feel about Machado...

Since 2000, the Yankees have picked players from New York or New Jersey twice in the first riund (Eric Duncan, Cito Culver). In that same timeframe they have used 10 first round picks on players from California. Maybe it’s just me, but geography doesn’t seem to be a big factor here. I’m not saying they definitely wouldn’t have picked Trout, but I am saying maybe they valued Slade Heathcott over him...

But when Cano signed his contract, 1 fWAR was worth closer to $5mill and he was valued at $28mill for his 5.6 fWAR season. Now, nearly 4 years later, that same season in the past is being valued at $39mill, despite it not getting any better. And that extra $11mill of value goes a long way to making subsequent years look better despite that they might be getting worse. And this only accumulates over the life of the contract. When 1 fWAR is valued at $10mill, which could happen during his deal, his first year has now doubled in value to $56mill, making the later years look more justified when in reality, they may not be...

It’s also slightly misused due to it’s fluid nature. Is it really fair to use the 2018 dollar value of fWAR to calculate the return on a player who was signed during a much lower valuation? By that logic, it becomes easier to justify the worth of long term contracts because the value of the early years keeps increasing...

That does operate on the assumption the Yankees would have drafted Trout. A lot of teams passed on him, including the Angels once. The Nationals passed on him to select Drew Storen. Imagine if they selected Trout. Trout, Harper, Strasbourg and Rendon all added in a 3 year stretch? They could have been a monster team...

Cherington only saddled the Sox with two bad contracts totaling less than $40mill AAV. (Castillo is not part of the Luxury Tan calculations.). That still leaves over $200 mill for the parts of the team that won the title. I would hope that’s a workable budget for any GM...

Well, look at the contracts for Sale and Kluber for example. Three guaranteed years and then two individually exercised options. By stringing multiple team options, the team has the ability to get out of a contract in what would be the middle of the deal. And often, more than once...
