  1. If I was a GM and Nathan Eovaldi’s agent approached me about a 1year / $5mill contract, I’d pass...
  2. It he hit pretty well pre-Manfred Missile...
  3. Josh Byrnes, who now cannot take over when Friedman departs and has obvious Red Sox ties...
  4. Yeah but a lot of WAR has to be retrofitted and it’s not clear how they are backfilling defensive data...
  5. I would hope it’s that 1919 season for Babe Ruth when he hit 29 home runs (which set the MLB record) on a team that only hit 32. Otherwise it’s a defensive whiz who had a great offensive season, making me think Ellsbury’s 30-30 season or Beltre’s one season or the year Youkilis hit 29 and got a Gold Glove. But I think 9.5 bWAR is tough for a 1b. Or Vern Stephens, but I don’t know how he was as a fielder. So Ruth, Ellsbury, Beltre or Stephens?
  6. He specifically said “position player.”
  7. I think you have to cut the Hall of Famers a little slack. Boggs is in Cooperstown. Betts is not. Betts might be one day, but I wouldn’t say he has already earned it. As in, if Mookie retired today, would he get into Cooperstown? In fact, since we are only talking about players from the Sox farm and no one said they had to actually play for the Sox, is Betts better than Bagwell was?
  8. So you’re confessing?
  9. I thought it was a silly article, given the Sox have no GM. I get that the interim crowd has to make decisions, but they also don’t want to hamstring the new GM, either. I think they try to deal him before the arb deadline. But if there are no takers, a non-tender is a very real possibility. Of course, if the Sox deal Betts and JDM opts out or is dealt, the decision to move Bradley loses it’s financial necessity...
  10. Better than Boggs?
  11. And the ones who don’t say it are either fairly ignorant or immensely wealthy...
  12. MLBTR is reporting the Sox are likely to tender Bradley a contract and then trade him. This is good news for Bradley fans who want him to be part of the team next year. Trading him will be difficult. Reportedly Dombrowski tried to trade Bradley aggressively last off-season and found no takers. This season, with a bigger salary and less control, he should be even more difficult to trade. Of course, not sure how this plan leaked. Since the Sox don’t have a GM yet...
  13. Then how is a GM supposed to acquire one?
  14. I get that. Plenty of teams have won without an “ace.” Heck, who was the “ace” of the 2018 Red Sox? Easy to answer in the first half of the season... Signing an “ace” pitcher is an unimaginative way to solve a team’s rotation issues, and the best part for a GM is, the fan base seemingly understands when the contract goes bad...
  15. Completely irrelevant. If the Sox kickoff a “rebuild” by trading Betts - a movement with no equivalent in Yankee history, they could be halfway to where the Yankee farm system got in 4 years in one quick deal this December...
  16. I’ve been told that doesn’t count, despite the 2015 Royals...
  17. I’ve been told repeatedly on this site a team needs an ace to win a World Series. Do the Yankees have one?
  18. Beltran was dealt midseason to the Giants 3 years before the Yankees signed him. He was with the Cardinals for two full seasons before signing with the Yankees. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/beltrca01.shtm And he did receive a QO from St. Louis. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/11/no-free-agents-accept-qualifying-offers.html
  19. Except for your failure to acknowledge the quote was written by Simpsons’ writers and not reflective of Bill James’ opinions at.all. Incidentally Bill James other chief interest seems to be unsolved murders, and he has a few books about some cases. Anyone read any? If anyone has, we can take it to another thread where non-baseball stuff belongs. Or mvp will yell at us
  20. The thing is, I’d gamble 10 times out of 10 on that Sale contract before giving that deal to Eovaldi. And I’d go all in on Eovaldi before giving that deal to Price. But DD went all in for all three. And had me not been fired, would he be going 10 years $250 mill for Gerrit Cole?
  21. No. It’s performance vs money for comparing to other players for trading purposes. It’s a well done site...
  22. And Maddon appears headed to the Angels..
  23. It’s a quote from The Simpsons. As Bill James voiced himself in the episode, he technically did say it...
  24. Has anyone considered the possibility that the reason Sale signed the contract in the first place is he knew or strongly suspected he wasn’t 100%? And that maybe if he was 100%, he would never have signed that deal?
  25. Not what it means. The surplus trade value is a measure of projected WAR (converted to USD) vs projected/remaining salary...
