  1. I think the bigger factor in moving Betts to the outfield was the horrific start to his career at the plate by Jackie Bradley Jr. This also may have been a significant factor in signing Rusney Castillo. I don’t think it’s fair to say moving his position is the wrong message or a blow to his confidence. That’s the kind of thing you’d have to know Devers to be sure of. He also might look at it like “Hey they think I can do anything.”...
  2. I doubt Devers would struggle much with the change, just like Betts didn’t struggle much (or at all) when moved to the OF...
  3. I think so too. The Nationals did OK without Harper...
  4. Some ballplayers are certainly superstitious, and some probably about position. But Devers might not be. Not sure if the Sox have ever asked him about changing positions before...
  5. Liking Kiluchi for 2b. The Sox won’t get him, but apparently he is a very exciting player...
  6. Then the Sox should deal him. They’re only going to win it all if all three human arm slings are healthy. But they can deal Betts for some useful players not found within the Sox organization and maybe be that much better in 2021 and beyond...
  7. At this point, average seasons might mean 70 IP...
  8. To be specific, what Scott Boras thought the market would be compared to his current salary...
  9. Better at 3b than 1b or better at 3b than Dalbec?
  10. I’ve frequently posted Dalbec as trade bait. But if the Sox move Devers to 1b, put Dalbec at 3b, and deal Chavis for a useful piece (pitcher? Outfielder?), that makes sense too
  11. He is not known for his offense. His numbers in NPB for Hiroshma were nothing great, and I doubt MLB would be any different. But in a lineup with Devers, Bogaerts, Martinez (or Betts), etc., I suspect the Sox can take a hit offensively for a great defender. A run saved is as good as a run driven in...
  12. While you might be right, sometimes you have to take into account the Dan Duquette Factor. DD came to boston with a history of winning with a low budget and replenishing his farm by dealing off vets with 5 years for more farm pieces. When he came to Boston, having an ectual working budget drastically changed his MO. Certainly we shouldn't expect Bloom to be nearly as extreme, but I do expect some differences. If he does make some deals like you say, one player on the block might be the positionless Chavis...
  13. If the posting fee doesn't count towards luxury tax, this guy would be a hge upgrade defesively over the surprisingly-capable Chavis.
  14. I don’t know the Astros budget, but does adding Greinke possibly hamper taking on Betts and Eovaldi?
  15. The question that arises - can the Sox reset and still keep Mooikie? And who can they realisitically trade to make that happen? To me, trading Price, Sale or Eovaldi is very liekly to clear only a small sum of space, because either the Sox or going to pay a big chunk or take back another loathsome contract. Would they have to deal Bogaerts? Can Martinez actually be traded? Should either go? If they keep the status quo, I expect the status quo, or possibly worse...
  16. FWIW, CBS Sports does have the Red Sox as Betts' most likely team in 2020 https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/where-will-mookie-betts-play-in-2020-ranking-all-30-mlb-teams-on-their-chances-of-landing-the-current-red-sox-slugger/
  17. Do posting fees count towards the luxury tax? While I doubt the Sox get too involved in free agency, if those fees do not count, they do give teams exclusive negotiating rights that prevent bidding wars...
  18. Does that include Bradley?
  19. Oh that was a massive overpay, especially since the Cubs really weren’t struggling with their closer. But I don’t think you can count on another GM giving up that much. Compare it to what the Dodgers gave up for a half year of Machado....
  20. I expect a few trades. Bloom made 65 trades since joining the Rays. Dombrowski made 21 in that same timeframe. In fact, I expect Bloom to make a couple trades with the Rays...
  21. That’s another thing. When you platoon, you double your chance of injury...
  22. I don’t think they need to explain anything to Betts. He’s a grown man. And he is signing very likely for the most cash. He didn’t hire an agent to hold grudges for him. Just be the guy holding the briefcase with the most cash...
  23. 1. It was a phrase before Breaking Bad. 2. It was not just a line; it was the title of the episode. 3. There is a difference between changing course and seeing just what happens until halfway through the season. Put it this way. Does “going all in one last time” with Betts really seem like an option now that we know Jake Marisnick is on the table? Isn’t that like going all in when you have 2-7 off suit in the pocket?
  24. It’s tough enough being labeled a “stats geek,” but I see a new brand of the numbers-obsessed fans have emerged - Budget Nerds. We will call you “Budgies”...
  25. Platoons are small market baseball. “Instead of getting one expensive and good full time player, let’s get two cheap ones who each suck part time in such a way that they compliment each other.”
