It’s not just the sample size with postseason numbers; it’s also that they are often spread out over a range of years. Also they assume every at bat is some sort of important key at bat. When the Yankees are pummeling the Sox in game 3 of the 2003 ALCS, did you watch the hitter driving in the 19th run of that game and think “Nice clutch hit!!”? -

There is also a difference in asking if Perez has sucked or not or if he’s worth his contract. What did you expect one a one year $5mill deal? Most players signing similar deals this off-season - Chris Archer, Kohei Arihara, JA Happ, Jon Lester - are having far worse seasons. Only Anthony Desclafini (2.0 fWAR) is doing better than Perez. Fangraphs currently has Perez worth $4.1 mill this season, putting him on more than pace to be worth his $5mill contract…

Agreed, but then the team has also been so bad, one has to wonder what really could have been done. The Sox (or really any team) weren’t going to be able to upgrade starting pitching, get reliable bullpen help, find a 1b solution, and overhaul the bench. Not in one deadline…

Fair enough. Although if opponents matter, the Toronto pitching needs to be even more suspect since they never have to face Toronto hitters. And that Tiger staff does pretty well considering they’re the only staff in the AL that doesn’t get to face the Tiger lineup…

I’m not saying it isn’t flawed, but there seems to be some sort of pervasive feeling in baseball nerd circles that CERA has little to no value, but no one ever says why. Most flawed stats at least carry a reason. Why is CERA, when used to compare performance of the same pitchers with different catchers, a flawed stat?
