  1. Actually if the Sox operated like the Rays, Duran would have been signed to a 5 year extension by now…
  2. Dalbec also had a 1.343 OPS in 5 games vs Tampa and Toronto, which shouldn’t be considered minor league staffs…
  3. Not. At Houck’s age, Sale had 3 top 6 Cy Young finishes. Houck’s career to date is 47 IP. He deserves to be in the rotation today, but any comp to Sale is way premature
  4. Manny was 27 when the Sox signed him. It made sense. Price was 31. The Sox had to hope it worked out and they won enough in the first 3 or 4 years to make the last seasons when that deal was dragging the team down more palatable…
  5. Cordero might be a career 4th outfielder, but I still doubt they DFA him after 135 PA…
  6. Santana hasn’t played at all in August
  7. There are ALWAYS exceptions. As much as I think those massive contracts are a bigger detriment than boon, there are always players the Sox just should go in on. Of course if the re-instate the “no pitchers/players over 30” guideline, about 90% of them all drop from consideration anyway…
  8. Eovaldi?
  9. Think she’ll DFD him?
  10. Well his first year he’s wasn’t allowed to spend. That’s why Scutaro was traded - to free up cash. And reportedly there was some edict about signing free agent pitchers over 30…
  11. Ok. I can agree with that viewpoint…
  12. And I’m sure Mrs. Santana also has some feelings, but it doesn’t change the fact that his days are numbered…
  13. I would have DFAd Santana and demoted Cordero…
  14. Sure. He can be DFAd, traded, or released. He just can’t be loved. (Of course it wouldn’t open up a spot on the active roster.)
  15. Yes they are. And I greatly prefer leverage situations over postseason numbers for a slew of reasons. I brought up other simple questions..
  16. For example, David Ortiz had twice as many sac flies in high leverage situations as he had in low leverage ones, despite having only half the PA. Where do these show up in your data? And are sac flies “clutch”?
  17. Legitimate questions to establish the definitions…
  18. Me, you and Danny Santana…
  19. Whitlock only through 205 innings combined in 4 minor league seasons. A 200 IP season at the MLB level might not be in his best interest right now..
  20. Technically I was incorrect. Zack Wheeler and Corbin Burnes are tied for the NL lead in fWAR with 5.6. Both actually have a decent chance to do the Cy Young/MVP dual award thing…
  21. Turner leads the NL in fWAR for all players not out for the season, tied with teammate Max Muncy, and 0.1 ahead of - and this shocked me - Pittsburgh outfielder Bryan Reynolds…
  22. And even then, how do we define “coming through”? Dave Henderson got a ton a Clutch Credit for game for pulling the Sox season out of the fire in game 5 of the 1986 ALCS. Now the home run was as clutch as it gets. But his game winning RBI came on a sac fly. Clutch or not? And Jimy Williams took a ton of flak for starting Pete Schourek in an elimination game in the 1998 ALCS. Schourek was masterful and left the game with a 1-0 lead that Tom Gordon lost. Was Schourek clutch or not?
  23. “Rebuilding the farm” does have varying levels of success. If you want to supplement your MLB roster, you need it to produce capable to goid Major Leaguers. If you want to use it to make trades, you just need really good minor leaguers…
  24. His tactic for winning works short term and fails long term, which it did in both Miami and, to a lesser extent, Detroit. In Boston, he did leave the team in a bad place with no farm to support a slew of hefty contracts. Winning is easier when your owner lets you spend a lot. Give Dombrowski the same constraints Cherington had and the 2018 Red Sox season might have been very differen. And by “to a lesser extent”, I meant the winning in Detroit. The aftermath was actually quite devastating. Still is, in fact…
  25. Depends. Maybe the problem was Bloom didn’t have the prospects to get Scherzer with Washington paying for some/all. Probably why, in the words of Mike Rizzo, talks “didn’t get very far.”
