    Nowadays pitchers are investments, and you don’t want your 7 year $210 mill investment risking damage to his arm by trying to squeeze and extra 2-3 innings out of him per start.     Precedent exists that MVP can come from a non-contending team. Heck, Andre Dawson and Alex Rodriguez both win the award for last place teams. That makes no sense to me about them being valuable at all. Both teams could have come in last without them. But there are rules for MVP eligibility and team contention is not a factor. The rules also explicitly state pitchers are eligible, but that didn’t stop George King from rewriting them to deny Pedro the award. (King apparently did learn the rules in time to vote for David Wells shortly after)…

    If 3 teams tie, they do not send one to the WC game. Teams are designated as A,B and C. Team A plays Team B. The loser plays Team C. Both winners advance to the WC game.     I’m sure they can adjust using software. Software was used nearly 30 years ago to make a realistic looking Tyrannosaurus and a slightly less realistic looking Jeff Goldblum. I’m sure they can develop some code to tailor the zone to an individual hitter some 3 decades later. They have to. The rules call for it. Make the software fit the rules, not the other way around…

    I am so not a fan of Bogaerts’ defense, but he is one player where I’ll take the bad with the good. But as he does have a looming opt-out and did hire Scott Boras to advise him on career decisions, I will fully understand if the Sox decide to move him and pursue other avenues….

    That still doesn’t support the ridiculous notion that the Sox are Tampa North until Bloom signs a big money closer. And passing on Hendricks or any other reliever last winter probably had more to do with not worrying about the game behind Sale until the Sox had Sale back. Not to mention, is Hendricks really the ideal choice here? He’s good, but he’s paid like he’s great. And paying good players like they’re great doesn’t make them great, but it does bump your payroll up against the tax threshold and prevent you from spending elsewhere. I’d rather Bloom extended Devers and/or Bogaerts than bring in some Liam Hendricks type. And the way you cite the methods that find Kittedge/Anderson, etc. makes it sound contemptuous. I’d rather have a CBO capable of finding talent no one else takes a chance on than one whose baseball acumen is limited solely to writing large checks. Money runs out sometimes…

    I think that refers more to front office personnel as opposed to the MLB roster. The Mets would actually be crazy to rebuild right now, especially if deGrom is ready for 2021…

    I’ve never been known to praise Eovaldi for his durability. That Wood is in his class - especially as I use Eovaldi as a benchmark for oft-injured pitchers - does not inspire confidence in this forum poster. However, if the Sox got clever and tried Wood out as a relief pitcher capable of handling high leverage situations, I am all on board…

    This happens in every sport. Changes in strategy come into play and if they work, everyone adopts them. Frankly, I don’t see how forcing starting pitchers to go longer makes the game more enjoyable. Sure there at times it could happen, but ultimately we want to see the Sox win, and if pulling the pitcher after 5 if necessary for that outcome, then so be it. Changing the rules to try to keep pitchers in longer is probably the worst solution to the “problem.” So far the new rule changes have just been flood IMO. I’d have preferred to see Cora yank Hernandez after hitting Rizzo, but those new rules that were put in place to do the job that existing unenforcedvrulesbwerevsupposed to do took away that option…

    What will be interesting is if all 3 of Boston, NY and Toronto tie. And it certainly is possible…

    And maybe he will overpay for the closer tied for third in the AL in blown saves, one off the lead. That seems like an odd line in the sand to me, however, as the team could be improved without going and getting a new closer and spending that money elsewhere…
