    So I got to thinking. Bloom says he wants to add a right-handed bat to the lineup as the team is getting “too left-handed.” But how left-handed are they really? From what I can tell, the only left-handed hitters currently in the lineup full time are Devers and Verdugo. Certainly we can expect one of Bradley or Duran. But is that really too left-handed? From the right side, the Sox have Hernandez, Bogaerts, JD, and Vazquez. And Dalbec should be a full time player, too. That’s fine right handed bats!! Why would he want to make sure the final player in the lineup is also a righty?

    Sox victimize the tYankees again, selecting RHP Brian Keller in the second round of the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft. Keller, 27, and his 7.5 BB/9 across 55 AAA innings doesn’t figure to get many more mentions on this forum…

    He’s a good defender, but not good enough for the contract he’ll want. He’s a Texan. Houston needs a shortstop, and offered a lot of money to Correa that they haven’t spent yet. This one seems obvious to me…

    Well, this year it might be related to the unknown parameters of the new CBA. If you look at the teams that spent heavily so far - Detroit, Texas, etc. - these are teams that don’t really have any tax limit fears. Most of the teams that annually hover around or over the limit, like the Yankees, Dodgers, Giants, etc. have been relatively quiet so far. Henry didn’t cut their spending, too…

    As the roster stands now, he might be the starting LF. At least again RHP…

    With Duran, we are rapidly approaching the transition from prospect to suspect. Either give him a legitimate chance to see if he can play, or trade him to someone rose who will for a missing piece….

    I believe it was a down year that coincided with a cancer diagnosis as well…

    I was about s unenthusiastic as anyone about Duran, but it’s only 114 PAs. Pedroia looked worse after his extremely brief debut as well. I think Duran gets another shot. Since he’s not as young as Pedroia was, it might t be a lengthy one, but he at least deserves one. And having Bradley around gives the Sox a little depth just in case…

    Now if they do sign someone like McCutchen, does thsat mean the OF alignment is: LF: Duran (vs RHP) McCutchen (vs LHP) CF: Bradley RF: Verdugo Or is it: LF: Verdugo CF: Duran RF: Bradley (vs RHP) McCutchen (vs LHP) Do either of these alignments make your earlobes wiggle?

    And he is a lot more likely than Trevor Story, who would only work out if the Sox also decided to play their home games in Coors...

    He had a nice stretch of 114 PAs. Yippy. He also posted a .503 OPS vs LHP and his success was limited to being part of a platoon, And despite being left-handed, still did not muster full time platoon playing time...

    I kind of like Lefty O'Doul for the Hall. Is there any player who was as successful after re-inventing himself? Babe Ruth converted from being a successful pitcher to being an immensely successful hitter, but O'Doul went from being a flop pitcher to being an extremely successful hitter who wasn't a regular position player until age 31 and still posted an OPS+ of 143 playing until he was 40...

    Exactly. And therefore losing for a better draft position is actually counterproductive, since top draft picks comman more $$$$$. There was a time when "rebuilding" meant "trying to put together a better team in the near future", but now it just seems to mean "saving lots of money and hoping things work out."

    Bryant is a fun pipe dream, but probably not in the cards. If the Sox sign a RHH corner OF, Andrew McCutchen and his .900 OPS vs LHP seems more likely to me...

    The NBA is the king of tanking teams, because there are only maybe 2 or 3 players in any given draft that turn into instant impact players. but in MLB, it makes very little sense. No one thinks Henry Davis is going to make the Pirates instant contenders. In fact, unlike the NFL and the NBA, even figuring out who the top pick in the MLB draft is up for a lot more debate, and quite often the top 7 or 8 picks get re-arranged in an order not found in any mock drafts...

    I would doubt this. Now if transactions resume and we get a 2B, then JBJ is a forth OF. But given the options available at 2B, it looks like it might be Kike back to the infield and JBJ/Duran in CF...

    That’s just due to the supply and demand issue. MLB, as the highest global payer of baseball players, only needs 776 people to fill their positions. If there were only 776 nursing positions in the world, those who made the cut would also probably make considerably more as well…
