    The OP only looks at results. 3 infield choppers = lousy pitching. 3 line drive outs with circus catches = great pitching. Bello does give up more soft contact hits than any pitcher I've seen in a long time.

    It was a team effort of mental mistakes all day, no doubt about it. Wong’s throw to 2nd and Yoshida’s bobble were physical errors; they happen. Throwing to the wrong base, not covering bases, etc. are mental mistakes. Those have to stop.

    If you want a sort of amazing stat re. Casas, Triston has a better OBP than Devers (by about .020). Nothing else is close (except K's), but that one caught my eye.

    If Ref were DFA'd, the Sox would either have to trade him, release him or place him on waivers, I doubt they could trade him and given the contract extension, they aren't going to release him. That leaves waivers; i don't know if he would clear them. He might have some value to a contender as a bench guy, so it would not be a for sure thing that he would clear waivers. If he did, the Sox could then outright him to the minors. However, since he has more than 3 years service time AND has been outrighted before in his career (I think by both Cleveland and the Twins), he could refuse the assignment and become a free agent. I don't it happening. For one thing, he is a cheap bench guy who knows and is seemingly content with his role. He's a righty, which the Sox are sorely lacking. I see Tapia as a more likely candidate for release or Duran sent down.

    When my son was a high school wrestler, I was able to observe parents bitching about calls that "cost their kid the match"; this would often spill over to the kids themselves. I told my son I didn't ever want to see or hear him complain about the officiating. I told him at some point, you are going to lose a match via a bad call. I also told him he would win a match by a bad call. It happened both ways at least a couple of times. I did give him an out on this though; I told him when you wrestle a perfect match, i.e., you made absolutely no mistakes and you still lose via an official's call, then you can complain.

    There really shouldn’t be too many pitches missed inside or outside. Part of the ball either passes over the plate or it doesn’t. Up and down is less strictly defined even by the rule book. I understand why the top of the strike zone is difficult to call; it’s defined as the midpoint between the top of the batter’s uniform pants and their shoulders. That’s not exactly a crystal clear line, and missing a call on something an inch up or down from there is defensible. The bottom is defined as a point just below the kneecap. Again, a little ambiguous but a better defined line than the top of the zone and should be more consistent. Missing calls on balls 6 inches in any direction is ridiculous.

Ort recalled from Worcester (before anyone screams, bullpen was heavily used yesterday and they need available bodies; Sherriff pitched twice and has options).     I think Tris Speaker has to be included on the qualifier list. I know he spent more than half his career in Cleveland, but he was with the Sox for his first 9 years and put up some pretty impressive numbers.

    Yep. And even if you take away Rice's last 2 years as primarily a DH, you still had HOF left fielders for 42 of 49 seasons, with only 2 of those 7 being due to decisions the Red Sox made (the Harper years).

    Sort of. Williams was gone for three years during WWII and then for basically 2 more during the Korean War. But it could be argued he would have been out there for those seasons under more peaceful circumstances. Yaz moved to 1B when the Sox got Tommy Harper, who played left for a couple years just before Jim Rice arrived in 1975. IIRC, Rice DH’d his last couple years and Greenwell was in left.

    A little misleading. If the Sox sold out every game, they could be no better than 7th. But even percentagewise, they are only pulling at just over 80% capacity, which is definitely way down from the 2010s.

    Bases loaded nobody out you try and get out of the inning minimizing the damage. Turning 2 is the correct play there. In 20-20 hindsight, it saved 2 runs. Get one out at the plate at the plate and the homer isn't a 2-run shot, it's a grand slam.

    I don't criticize managerial moves after the fact. If I don't like something, I say it as it happens. Also, you could at least bitch about the proper pitcher who allowed the game to get completely away; the guy who was in in the 7th. Garza allowed 1 run in the 5th. Score goes to 2-0. He should have been out of the 6th inning on the DP grounder that Kike threw away, allowing a 3rd run to score and extending the inning (and despite that leading to guys on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out, he got out of that inning without allowing the 4th run to score).

    That could be correct, but I know the radio guys used the word hopefully. That doesn't translate to just an extra day off.

    Well said. To paraphrase Maj. Charles Winchester from M*A*S*H, Old Red does indeed possess 20-20 hindsight. As I said earlier in the thread, Red's criticism's would be a lot more impressive if he made them in real time instead of seeing what the results are first.

    Do we know Winck was available? Not saying he was or wasn't, but managers tend to hold such info close, if for no other reason than to make the other manager think.

    I don't think he was. First, Lively is a rightly. I doubt Cora sits him against a righty. Second, the radio guys said late in the game (maybe the 8th inning) that hopefully Verdugo would be back tomorrow night to help bolster the top of the line-up. That implies to me he was sick or dinged up. Wouldn't shock me to find out that he has what Sale and Devers had on the road trip.

    Except the Reds change who they use out of the pen in a closer game. Can’t assume the game plays out the same.

    33 year old journeyman. He was up with the Sox a few weeks ago and got into a couple of games. I don’t think he allowed any runs but it was a MSS (microscopic sample size).

    I’d recommend a mandatory 8 am practice tomorrow morning. Everyone except tomorrow’s starting pitcher can be there.

    Agree 100%. Killer was Valdez and McGuire unable to make contact and get him to second.
