Joel Youngblood once had hits for two teams in one day. He got a hit for the Mets in an afternoon game vs the Cubs; an inning later he was traded to the Expos, got to their night game in Philadelphia and got a hit for Montreal.
Turner did have a hit for the Jays earlier today.
Sox pitching since the All Star break have allowed 4, 7, 9, 9, 0, 20, 7, 11 and 7 (so far) runs. 74 runs in 9 games, and include 1 shutout. That’s almost unfathomable.
He fills the 5th-6th spot in the pen okay. Unfortunately, without Slaten and Martin, he’s being asked to fill anywhere from the 2-4 slot, and he’s not that type of pitcher.
Plus asking pitcher to get 5 outs in an inning …
How many did he throw in the pen warming up each game? Any pitcher, especially a reliever, will tell you they do add to workload. Yeah, he only threw 23 in the Friday and Saturday games, but add in probably 30-40 more hard warmups minimum and it adds up.
You are correct in that he didn’t do a good job tonight, but it’s explainable.
Doesn’t matter to him. As I’ve written before, dmoney would consider JBJ pulling 3 balls from over the fence good pitching. He’d say 2 bunt singles and a chopper off the plate was awful pitching.
I think it works this way. The Dodgers have 7 days to work out a trade for him (which pretty much brings them right up to the July 30 deadline); he also can be put on waivers in that time frame. If no team claims him, he is released and can sign with anyone.
So if the Sox actually want him, a trade is the only way to assure that. Hard to say if he would survive a waiver claim until the Red Sox turn.
He’s eligible for free agency after the 2028 season, when he’ll be 32. I think he starts his arbitration years next year; right now he’s making $760K, which is $20K over the mlb minimum.
It’s amazing how long losing game threads are vs wins. It’s also disturbing how many posters only show up during losses.
It’s one loss folks. No different than Monday’s. It adds 1 to the loss column. No more, no less.
Could be you might see more than one. Smith could be one. Romy Gonzalez has pitched in his career, as has Reese McGuire (doubt he’d be used since he’s catching).
Sox have to stay down by more than 8 to use one though.
Edit - Got an idea for the 7th and 8th. Smith comes in and throws 3 batters. The he and Romy swap positions and Romy faces 3 batters. Then they swap positions again. Rinse snd repeat.
One game doesn’t mean anything. This loss counts no more than Monday’s did or Friday’s or Saturday’s did. Those were bad losses. This is one of those days that any team has a few games a season.
Like MVP posted, he has NEVER pitched well at Coors Field. He probably should never pitch there again. Seriously, skip him or bump him.
Years ago I read some book where it described Earl Weaver setting up his rotation weeks in advance. He’d look at stuff like how a guy fared against a certain team or in a certain park and figured out a way to avoid starting a guy accordingly.
