  1. Rodon looks on tonight. This pitching matchup didn’t favor the Sox, and if Carlos is in a groove, how May pitches probably won’t matter.
  2. Hey Fred, still waiting for that list of at least 14 Sox players who suck. You promised it Thursday night. Where is it?
  3. Campbell never really struggled at any level. Anthony had a couple spots along way where he did, if only for a short time; Salem in 2022 and 2023 were his low points covering about 65 games (he hit around .200 overall, so he had to deal with some failure). I think Campbell was brought along too quickly. Prior to this year, he had played 137 minor league games (roughly 1 minor league season). Even now he's under 200. By contrast, Anthony played over 300. Betts played 299. Mike Trout played 291. Mentally dealing with failure is part of baseball. I'm a huge HS wrestling fan, and I can't even count the number of multi-time state champs I've seen who you think will do well at the major collegiate level and just disappear because they can't adjust to the fact that everyone there was just as dominant in HS as they were. Campbell is struggling on the field for the first time in his life; virtually all players go through this. A bad first year means nothing (look at Mike Schmidt's rookie stats). A good first year means nothing (Joe Charboneau).
  4. Oh yeah. The thing is the teams that reach the LLWS tend to have early maturers because at that age that means a ton. Most never do much after LL because other players catch up to them physically. But there are a few kids among the qualifying teams that will find there way to pro ball eventually. A couple of Sox have: Varitek played as a ss at the LLWS way back when. Rafaela played for Curaçao in 2013.
  5. Be interesting to see how Cora manages the pen today. Crochet’s at 75 pitches through 5 so he’s not going 9. Whitlock and Chapman have pitched the last 2 days so they are probably not available.
  6. Lamade Stadium in Williamsport? BTW, Fairfield, CT plays Las Vegas for the US Championship today. Winner plays for the LLWS title tomorrow.
  7. Story says to Stanton “Anything you can do I can do better”
  8. Duran is anti-clutch. You can just see him tense up in those situation and he chases everything. Ant-clutch players see their averages go down significantly in those at bats. Guys like Ortiz are able to relax and just do what they normally do. Their averages are about the same in those situations. Doesn’t mean they come through every time, but they will put a good AB together.
  9. I liked that swing from Narvaez; when he was going well he went the other way a lot. Lately he’s looked pull happy.
  10. Tonight’s game reminded me of an old style doubleheader I attended vs. the Yankees at the original Yankee Stadium, must have been 1972 or 1973; Sox took both by scores of 2-1 and 1-0.
  11. Nobody slides feet first on steals anymore. Theory is headfirst gets you there faster; presents less surface to tag, and you can use your arms to avoid tags (e.g., swim moves). Since everything is measured and analyzed these days, I’m going to assume these are true. Now, I think if you have an infielder who tends to block the base with his knee or feet, a feet first slide will break said infielder of that habit quickly.
  12. I’m a little weak on my 1950’s movies, but wasn’t that from A Streetcar Named Desire?
  13. Anthony ambushed him. He’s starting almost always takes the first strike. So pitchers save that down and in pitch for a two strike pitch.
  14. I d like to see Duran bunt here; this does not look like a good matchup for him.
  15. Yeah. Gardner always seemed to come up with hits at the most inopportune time.
  16. Good job by Matz there, though he did get away with one to Chisholm.
  17. Rice has been a PITA against the Sox since he came up. He’s starting to remind me of Gardner.
  18. Narvaez seems to be trying to pull the ball more; when he was going well, he had a lot of oppo hits.
