  1. Also proof that a homer counts the same if it goes 1 foot over the fence or 100 feet. Aaron wasn’t noted for tape measure shots but he still trotted around the bases 750+ times.
  2. That has nothing to do with being unathletic (and I agree he’s not the most athletically gifted guy on the field). It is one of those fundamental things but I’ll give him a slight break in that he hasn’t played much OF.
  3. Ball was in the sun the whole way out there; he didn’t see it. Campbell’s inexperience hurt there; if the more experienced Cedanne is in CF, maybe he calls off Duran since he had a better angle.
  4. No. Crochet spiked a changeup and it hopped up about 5 feet. Bench or Pudge Rodriguez wouldn’t have stopped it.
  5. Besides, wasn’t “Fatboy” reserved for Pablo Sandoval? Just trying to diffuse the tension.
  6. Well, as Ken Harrelson would have said, you can cancel the postgame show.
  7. Only thing to stick around for is the potential no-hitter. Edit - and maybe a Toro appearance on the bump.
  8. Ortiz had good baserunning instincts though. He knew when he could try for an extra base when he couldn't, especially early in his Sox tenure. At the end, when he needed a couple hours just to get his feet ready , he was certainly station to station, but he took his share in his younger days.
  9. Disagree. Devers isn’t a leader; it’s not in his makeup. Not everyone is (I am certainly not one); no sin in that. The FO was stupid in assuming he could be one. In a way, Devers is a bit like Yaz. They are introverts who, their given their druthers, would rather be left alone to just go out and play. Yaz very reluctantly accepted the role, but he wasn’t comfortable in it. Devers had the additional barrier of language, but I don’t think that played a big role. He just didn’t want the role. BTW, Betts was the only one of those players traded. Bogaerts reached free agency and Eovaldi left the Sox twice via free agency. Betts would have as well.
  10. That’s because you love the guy. You aren’t objective about him, and that’s fine. It does not speak well of Devers if he felt threatened by a 21 year old rookie with less than 2 months in the show volunteering to give 1st base a try to help out the team (assuming those reports are true). I’m putting the whole fiasco at 65% on upper management, 30% on Devers and 5% on Cora (he’s this low because he had the impossible task of trying to satisfy the needs of both sides). All parties could and should have done more to make it work.
  11. Has to be a position player; Sox have 13 pitchers on the 26 man right now, which is the max allowed.
  12. Is Abreu eligible to come off the 10 day? If so, I’m guessing he’s the move. edit - he’s not for a couple more days, so maybe Sogard till then?
  13. As I recall, Ortiz said Devers should consider playing first. If you won’t listen to Big Papi …
  14. Alonso really didn’t want to leave the Mets. Given what they paid for Soto, I think they would have outbid the Sox for Alonso as well.
  15. Agree. Also, the Sox cost for Hicks is roughly $27-28M total for 2 1/2 seasons. That’s still less than 1 year of Devers contract. The big question is what did JH do with the “savings”, and that’s something none of us can answer with any degree of certainty.
  16. He's appeared in 8 games with the SF this year; his first 4 were in relief and his last 4 were as a starter. Since the Sox rotation is set right now (I repeat, right now), if they view him as a starter, they want him getting regular work in Worcester. If they view him as a bullpen piece, they want him to work back to that role. I wouldn't read too much into it.
  17. Meaningless. Willie Mays first 26 MLB At-Bats, 1 for 26, 1 HR, 1 RBI Mike Schmidt hit .206 in a cup of coffee with the Phils in 1972 and followed that up with a .196 his first full year. Pedroia didn’t light the world on fire his first couple months On the flip side, Ted Cox went 6 for his first 8, 7 for his first 12 and finished his September call up hitting .368 in 1977. He lasted 4 full seasons and 272 games in the majors. The first month or two or even year is hardly predictive.
  18. Two things can be true at the same time. Nomar wanted more money; the Sox didn’t want to pay him premium $ for what they (correctly) viewed as waning performance. The impasse led Nomar to pout through the first 4 months of the 2004 season, culminating with the series in NY when Jeter went into the stands to make a catch while Nomar sat out with some mysterious injury. The rest was history.
  19. No trade can be evaluated two hours after it happens. The major piece coming from the Giants is in High A ball. It’ll be 2-4 years before the final grade is in.
  20. The kid who loved to play and was always smiling hasn’t been seen since Bogaerts left. You seldom saw him happy any more. As someone else pointed out, he sat by himself in the dugout; you never (or almost never) saw him interacting with other players. Who knows, there may have been issues in the clubhouse that we’ll never know about (nor should we). Not saying there were, not saying there wasn’t. Thems that know don’t talk and thems that talk don’t know.
  21. Maybe not. Fans never realize Cora et al have information on the availability of players that they don’t. More than likely Chapman told Cora he wasn’t available. We don’t have to like it, but I’m pretty sure if Chapman was available, he’d have been used.
