  1. Bello not sharp today. Pen is going to be taxed even if he keeps it close. Edit - pitch count not as high as I thought it was. 45 through 3 innings isn’t awful. Middlebrooks had a good point, some of those pitches are moving too much.
  2. He was a train wreck when he played for Minnesota. He hasn’t been too bad for the Sox except for the last 2 nights, which could be attributed to “I’llshowyouitis”. Don’t use him in high leverage situations and he’s acceptable for a back end piece of the pen.
  3. So what’s the worst that happens, the young players get a little taste of postseason baseball now even if it doesn’t result in winnng it all?
  4. No he’s not, unless he comes in for a relief inning in Game 7 of the World Series (not happening in a LCS) or there’s rainouts. No pitcher goes on 3 days rest anymore and haven’t for close to 50 years.
  5. The team does have more patience than us. Yoshida’s start reminds me of a player who, in his first 42 PAs this year was hitting .176 and slugging .294. Coincidently, he also had a limited spring training. Devers took off offensively after that. Note - I AM NOT COMPARING THE TWO, but just a Devers didn’t forget how to hit, neither has Yoshida. Masa is a solid hitter
  6. Follow-on to my earlier posts about using Hicks after the delay. Whitlock apparently was sick and unavailable. Prior to the tarp going on the field, Hicks was announced and entered into the line-up card. Lou Merloni said on the radio side that there is no exception to the 3 batter rule in that situation, so Cora was forced to use Hicks for at least 3 batters. But with Whitlock and Chapman unavailable, the Sox only had 6 arms in the pen. They ran through Murphy, Alcala, Bernardino and Weissert, leaving Hicks and Wilson (who pitched Saturday and Sunday and may not have been available either). They were screwed no matter what they did unless they used Weissert for a second inning or a starter.
  7. Whitlock should have been, but who’s available is info we never have. The problem with Buehler and Fitts back to back is BP guys are forced into overuse.
  8. No, I basically said I didn’t like him having to warm up again after after a 90 minute delay when he ready to come into the game earlier.
  9. I don’t often criticize Cora, but that was a mistake. Hicks threw 1 2/3 innings yesterday and then warmed up completely today for original bottom of the 9th. Asking any pitcher to warm up again after that kind of delay is stupid.
  10. That #9 Twins hitter started that whole thing with a fantastic 2 strike emergency swing to foul off a very good pitch, then singled. Sox hitters could take a note from that. I remember reading Eddie Murray used to take one round of BP practicing his emergency swings.
  11. I would not bring Hicks in. He warmed up completely once, a 90 minute delay isn’t going to be good.
  12. Game is supposed to restart at 11:05 pm Central (12:05 am Eastern).
  13. I don’t think he’s giving up on Campbell, but they extended him before he had ever played a major league game. He had only played 137 minor league games (not even equivalent to a full minor league season). That does seem a tad premature. To be fair, they also tried to extend Mayer and Anthony, but they turned the offer down.
  14. That works if you aren’t pursuing a playoff spot. Not as simple if you are.
  15. Story didn’t deliver, but at least he hit the ball. There’s always a chance if you put it in play. Duran was especially disappointing since not only was there no one out, but he had a 3-0 count.
  16. A few pitched through it and came out no worse for wear. We remember those guys. We don’t remember that most didn’t get through it and disappeared, never to be heard from again. When Bruce Sutter had to retire after he blew his arm out, people kept telling him how sorry they were for him. He responded with one of the classiest statements I’ve ever heard, something along the line of “Don’t feel sorry for me; I had 12 years. Feel sorry for the kid in A ball who just blew his arm out and will never get the chance I got”
  17. Maybe we could add a year to Hill’s age every time he’s mentioned (kinda like that one first baseman we were talking about several weeks ago kept shrinking an inch every time his name was posted here).
  18. My only hesitancy is that for some reason, the Stankees seem to have an elixir that enables guys to excel there for a brief time before turning into pumpkins once they leave the Bronx. I’m just envisioning him having one hit later in the year that kills us. We seemingly got away with Narvaez, do we dare tempt fate twice in 9 months?
  19. Yep. Just last night (and I mean like 11 pm), the forecast was for a 20% chance of light rain overnight, which here in western Illinois is a standard summer forecast. We got the whole 20%. Rain gauge said 3.3 inches this morning.
  20. I tend to agree with you re. the second paragraph. The only thing I would say is they may have some idea of a guys pro potential by looking at how he did against the guys who were drafted. How he did against the non draftees is irrelevant. Obviously this works better at the college level, especially major conferences , where the better teams will have a few draftees, Not exactly the same since facing a couple guys with pro potential is a lot different than facing a whole lineup of actual pros High school draft choices are even more of a crapshoot. Unfirtunately, it always comes down to measurables and analytics. A Bill Lee would have trouble getting a looksee today.
