    Why punish Porcello? Ever looked at Cashner’s track record? Both are past their prime, but unlike Cashner, at least Porcello had a prime.

    Oh no. I’d put him in the pen as the long guy. He can eat the innings for others in situations where it really wouldn’t matter if he sucked. He can serve as a pinch runner as well. Be even better if it was September. Then he could be just sent to the pen and never be used.

    Because it’s baseball. Not every mistake leads to a hard hit ball and not every hard hit ball is on a mistake. There’s a reason it’s hard to hit .300.

    No, the stats count whether they play or not. It’s an official game. Eovaldi gets a blown save because he allowed the tie run to score.

    While the history looks good on most of these, one concern I would have is most if not all of them were much stockier than Sale. Most were 210 lbs plus with a couple topping 240. Sale is what, 6’6” and 180 soaking wet? Most of those guys used their legs, Sale is much more whip arm. I hope you’re right, but it does give me some pause.

    It would be part of the CBA language. I would not allow the salary of a player injured during the season to be exempt from luxury tax considerations for that season. You were counting on that player for that year and he got hurt. However, I would be in favor in a situation like Pedroia’s where the it’s a career ending injury to allow that salary (or at least a portion of it) to “go off the books”. And it can’t be discretionary; it would have to be verified independently of the team. From a players association point of view, all Pedroia’s case means is that there’s ~$25 million not available to go to other players. Don’t know enough about the Prince Fielder case or Ellsbury’s situation go know if the Rangers or Yankees would be able to put those contracts off the books. If they are similar enough, I’d have no problem with it.

    The only real viable option is August 15. Sox are at Cleveland the day before and home on the 16th. KC is in the middle of a home stand. The only other common days are August 22 and September 2. Royals are at Baltimore the day before and go home on the 23rd. Red Sox are traveling to San Diego for game on the 23rd. 9/2 the Sox are getting done with a west coast swing that ends on the 1st. KC again is in the middle of a home stand. Or they could just decide to wait and play it after the season ends if it matters (it won’t)

    They’ll go as long as they can. No more games with KC this year and from what the radio guys have said, once it starts it’s supposed to rain most of the night.

    Depends. Give one up on a pitch down the middle, sure. Give it up on a pitch on the black or on what should be a ball, different story. In fact, in ERod’s case, I’d rather he give up an 0-2 hit than nibble, end up at 3-2 and then give it up.

    Okay both teams, that pitch has been called a strike all night both ways. The hitters need to adjust.

    Right now he has to harness the two he has. If he stays in the pen, he probably won't need a 3rd or 4th pitch.

    Listening to the game, but it doesn't sound like either the double or the single were exactly roped. More worried about Eovaldi.

    I agree. This isn't a guy who is choosing to "walk" away or was hurt doing something stupid in the off-season. It's baseball injury related. You have to honor the terms of the contract. Now when the next CBA comes up, perhaps language can be negotiated so that situations like this don't count against the various cap levels. But those aren't the rules right now.

    From Boston.com: Dr. Christopher Geary, an orthopedic surgeon at Tufts Medical Center who has not treated Pedroia, described this type of operation as “a much bigger procedure’’ than anything Pedroia has had to this point. “If he was 16, they do either knee replacement or a partial knee replacement,’’ said Geary. “But because of his age [35], there’s a relatively newer technique where they take what’s called a mega allograft.     No he didn’t. If he pinch hits Travis for Moreland, KC brings on a right hander who was warm in the pen. Just depends on which matchup he preferred. No idea what the pitcher-hitter stats are.

    I hate when people say that. It's baseball. You never know when the opposing pitcher will have "that" start where everything is working. Or one of those nights where every bloop by the opponent drops in and every line drive you hit is right at somebody. The season tends to iron these things out, a single game does not. Merrifield gets a couple hits (not an out of nowhere possibility, he's 2nd in the league behind Devers) and Soler follows with a couple homers (ditto, he's 5th overall in the AL) and all of a sudden the Royals have 4 runs on the board.
