Giving up homers is not a big deal. These are big league hitters, they are going to hit them. As was pointed out last night, Justin Verlander leads the majors in homers allowed with 25 or 26, which is 10 more than Porcello; he has given up more than Porcello the last 3 years combined as well. The key is giving up solo shots or 2 run homers at most. The 3 run and grannies are what kill you.
Jim Palmer gave up a ton of homers. He never allowed a grand slam and only a handful of 3 run shots. Didn’t stop him from getting to Cooperstown.
