  1. Mal, Vazquez caught 15 innings last night. There is no way he's ready to go.
  2. Slash, your intense dislike of Price is rearing its head in this thread.
  3. I imagine that the Pawtucket-Boston shuttle will be active today.
  4. To be fair, at the professional level it doesn’t come up all that often. In the 50+ years I’ve been following the game, the number of times I’ve even seen it come up could probably be counted on one hand. I knew the rule because I used to umpire at the amateur level , where it does happen a few times a year.
  5. I don’t like it either but given the investment in these guys (in Price’s case, $30M per year), I sort of get it. We all remember the Ryans and Gibsons and Seavers who pitched 300 innings a year for years on end What we don’t remember are the guys who blew their arms out after a year or 2 and were done. One of the greatest and classiest quotes I ever heard was by Bruce Suter, the great Cubs reliever many years ago. When his arm finally went, people kept telling him how sorry they were. Suter said something like “Don’t feel sorry for me. I had 15 great years. Feel sorry for the kid down in A ball who just blew his arm out and will never get the chance to experience what I have.”
  6. He utterly sucks as a reliever. He’s at least had his moments as a starter (albeit not many).
  7. Oh, I think Vazquez, JD, Bogaerts are a lot more culpable.
  8. Johnson needs to make sure he takes a full warm up. If that’s 10 or 15 minutes, so be it. Edit- I’m listening to this one on xmradio, which is a few minutes behind the actual game. So my comments may not be timely.
  9. That amounts to one hit an inning. 17 hits in 17 innings isn’t anything great.
  10. At this point a loss is on the hitters. The pitchers have done their jobs.
  11. Anyone else remember when the AL had a 1 am curfew?
  12. Especially a guy who’s walked back to the dugout 5 times.
  13. I edited my earlier question; Ted never struck out 4 times either.
  14. When I googled the question, the article also said that Ruth, Aaron, DiMaggio, Gehrig, Ott and Musial never struck out 4 times in a game. Given their power, that surprised me a little. Other names listed of more recent vintage were Brett and Gwynn. One additional name who I was surprised never had one was our own #8. Thought that maybe at the end of his career someone might have gotten him for sombrero.
  15. Probably. A better question would be did he ever strike out 4 times in a game? Edit- I googled that question. Williams never struck out 4 times in a game.
  16. They have to ride him out. They probably already have called a couple guys in Pawtucket for tomorrow.
  17. All they have left is Walden. And with ERod tomorrow, he will likely be needed.
  18. Too many here expect perfection, and then improvement from there.
  19. Now comes the part where everyone is trying to hit a home run (even more than usual in the modern game) instead of getting on base.
  20. Okay, much as we’ve groused about the pen tonight, the end result is they’ve pitched 5 innings and allowed 1 run. Anybody who says they wouldn’t have signed up for that before the game started is lying.
  21. They had an interesting tidbit on the radio broadcast. Target Field is located almost exactly halfway between the Equator and the North Pole. It’s 1 1/4 miles south of the 45th parallel. You’d think it would be much further north.
  22. It could be done but would require using the two catchers in a different position at the same time. We know Vazquez has played 3rd, 2nd and 1st but I don’t think Leon could play anywhere else except maybe 1st.
  23. All of which means nothing with the stuff he’s got tonight.
