    Question on the steal; it looked to me like the tag came on the helmet which was touching his chest after falling off; would he have been safe had it not fallen off? Ballsy play either way.

    Right city, wrong team. It was the St. Louis Browns who used Eddie Gaedel as a pinch hitter in a game around 1951. He walked, was replaced by a pinch runner and never played again. IIRC, he wore number 1/8. The team moved to Baltimore a couple years later.

    notin, Dalbec played 15 innings at 3B this year (including 1 full game) and has a fielding percentage of 1.000 on 1 chance (an assist). Doesn’t change your point though.

    Here’s a stat from Gibson’s 1968 season that will blow your mind: He started 34 games that year, completing 28 of them (with 13 shutouts). In each of the 6 games he did not complete, he was removed for a pinch hitter. He never came out of a game from the mound all season (I think had manager Red Schoendienst tried, Gibson might have killed him). One I read the other day; in his final appearance in 1975 (he was in the bull pen at that point), Gibson was brought in with the bases loaded. He got the first 2 hitters and then gave up a grand slam to Pete LaCock (son of game show host Peter Marshall). 15 years later in an old timers game in Kansas City, Gibson faced LaCock and drilled him. I saw him pitch once at Shea Stadium in the early 70s. IIRC, Willie Mays was with the Mets at that point.

    Perez and Pivetta might fit very nicely into the 4/5 slots in the rotation next year.

    At least in that one, somebody actually did something wrong. The crazier one is the perfect throw from the outfield that hits a runner and bounces away, allowing him to advance.

    He was fired tis morning. And how draft picks are working next year is not clear at this point. It may not be strictly off this years record; it may involve a combination of 2019 and 2020.

    Which bunch would that be? A lot of these guys won’t be there next year. Don’t confuse sleepwalking with lack of talent (of which this team was lacking a bunch).

    Houck will be in AAA next year. The Sox have basically said so and he really needs a 3rd pitch to be an effective starter long term. He looks promising but 11 innings don’t me a thing. He’s also only pitched 83 innings at AA and 25 at AAA. This is a very raw kid.

    I think you clicked the wrong column in Baseball Reference. The Sox have 16 outfield assists, which does lead the majors (5 more than any other team). Verdugo has 7 by himself. (In looking at it, you probably clicked the errors column, as the Sox do have 6 outfield errors).

    He’ll need a 3rd pitch to be an effective long term starter. Wouldn’t surprise me to see him spend some time in AAA to start the year in 2021 doing so.

    Minor nit; not all extra inning runs are unearned. Only a run scored by the guy placed at second is unearned. Any subsequent runs are subject to normal scoring rules regarding earned and unearned. If somebody hits a homer to score him, it's one earned and one unearned.

    I’m pretty sure Dalbec tied the club record for consecutive games with a home run. I looked at a list of players who have homered in 6 or more straight and I didn’t see any Red Sox players on it. If he did, anyone know who else may hit one in 5 straight? I don’t recall anyone in my time as a fan (and I’m in my 54th season) but that doesn’t mean much.

    300 pitches combined with one out in the 6th, and overall, the ump has had a large strike zone.

    I say take the position players out, put the scrub pitchers in the field and let them chase balls around.

    Now to be fair, if you were standing out there for hours on end watching your pitchers go 3 and whatever on every batter, walking a bunch of them, you might just fall asleep as well. One has to wonder if Roenicke was trying to send a message to the front office with Hall, get him out of here and never bring him back up here again.
