    In addition to his great stuff, he was a thinking pitcher who was always learning. I remember reading his book as a kid. In it, he described his rookie year the first time he faced Hank Aaron. He got Aaron to ground into a double play on an inside fastball. Seaver "wrote" he recalled thinking, that's it, his weakness is an inside fastball. Next time up, Seaver threw an inside fastball and Aaron deposited into the left field seats. Seaver said he learned that hitters think as well; Aaron said to himself, kid pitcher, got me to hit into a DP on an inside fastball last time, bet he comes in with it again. The other thing I remember from his book was his description of the time he lost a perfect game with 1 out in the 9th on a single by Jimmy Qualls. He swore that someday he would pitch a perfect game (he got one no-hitter with the Reds, but never got that perfect game). The he said something about not knowing what a true perfect game was. Was it 27 pitches for 27 outs or 81 straight strikes? For some reason, those passages have always stuck with me, even though its been nearly 50 years since I read them

    He’s also only 21 and played all of 28 games at AA. He’ll be at Pawtucket next year, probably learning 2B. He’s been a ss most of his minor league career (that’s where he played when I saw him in 2017 and 2018 with our local Class A Astros affiliate). He looks like a utility type guy but I’d let him mature a little before totally giving up on him.

    I agree with Roenicke here. Hart can take the pounding. He’s goes out for the 9th as well.

    Pitching rotation? Right now, he’s got 1 guy who’s actually a starting pitcher in Perez, and he’s a 4/5 type starter. Line up wise he’s also not dealing from a position of strength either. What would your rotation be? What would your lineup be? Step up and be the manager.

    Who knows? For whatever reason, Beni can’t hit lead off. He sucked at it last year and he sucked at it this year.

    Weber has absolutely sucked as a starter in the first inning; he’s been halfway decent when coming in as a long reliever. Perhaps he should be the bulk guy following an opener.

    Nope. Southerners are not Yankees, and (start Southern drawl) ya'll would get in a whole lotta trouble for saying so (end Southern drawl). Years ago (like 40), I was told by somebody from Tennessee that there are only 5 true Southern states, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee. Louisiana and Texas are too far west, Virginia and Kentucky are too far north, Florida has all those damn Yankees and North Carolina has that word in it.

    Oh, I don't disagree, but it's not like Peraza is lighting up the place. It's more of an academic question. Kid showed a little something when given some extended PT. and then hasn't played at all.

    Downs has played about a dozen games at AA. No way he's in Boston next year, at least until late. Not sure what they are doing with Arauz. He played steady for about a week from roughly the 10th through the 18th, and now has played only once since then (and that was a full week ago). He was holding his own offensively at least while he was playing.

    Problem is Vazquez isn’t overall all that great a catcher. He has a powerful arm. Most of his other catching skills are average at best.

    Cole's signing was pre-pandemic. Sure, in 20-20 hindsight, yeah, but literally no one was calling it a pandemic in December and anyone who says they did is lying. WHO didn't call it that until March.

    I’d trade Moreland to NY in a heartbeat. Of course, the price would be steep. I’d want LaMahieu and a couple of those kid pitchers at minimum.

    Another piss poor AB by Vazquez with a guy on 2nd. How many times does he swing at the first pitch in that situation and hit a topper to the 3rd baseman?

    They’re a month into the season Jerry; the short summer training is no longer an excuse for injuries. 3 weeks ago sure, but not now.

    It's exactly the emphasis on velocity. For one thing, we've developed a bunch of throwers, not pitchers. Throwers think they have to go 100% on every pitch. The aces of yesteryear could throw hard when they needed to, but they knew that 85% would get the job done most of the time. They had the extra gear when they needed it. Old timers knew how to pitch, how to set hitters up. They called their own game and always had since they were kids. Can you imagine Bob Gibson being told the pitches would be called from the bench?

    ERA is not a good stat for relievers. Hembree’s year so far is a perfect illustration of that. That ERA is primarily the product of his last outing against the Phillies. He pitched in 11 games this year for the Sox and allowed 6 runs in 9 2/3 innings. In 8 of those outings, he was unscored on; he gave up 1 run in each of 2 others and 4 in the Philadelphia game. His ERA going into that last game was 1.86. I will take a middle reliever who does the job 70% of the time every time. Note I said middle reliever. Now to be fair, I don’t know about inherited runners but I think most times he’s come in at the start of innings.

    Roster has to be down to 26 at noon tomorrow. Who goes. With Arroyo now on the active roster, I’m guessing Lin and a pitcher (there are too many candidates).
